I’m honestly not sure which version I love more. This or the remake. The original has amazing special effects, it’s legitimately scary, and Roddy McDowell is so good in the role. While the remake has a great soundtrack, and Colin Ferrell & David Tennant absolutely CRUSHING IT in their respective forms. Ferrell as Jerry is instantly off-putting and sleazy, while Tennant is so goddamn funny in the role, everything he says makes me laugh
Heya. The director, Kathryn Bigelow, was the first woman to win the Best Director Academy Award (for The Hurt Locker). (Surely, somebody else has already mentioned this. But just in case...) Ah, and you might want to check out the artwork of Tony DiTerlizzi. You two are cut from the same stylistic cloth.
The idea of a canine quadraped (4 legged creature) trying to come out from inside a bipedal one. Truly fascinating, the entire musculoskeletal structure expands and shortens to create a new set of back muscles, spinal column, hind legs, front paws, elongated jawline, protruding canines/fangs etc.
love this film especially the music, Jerry Dandrige was my first vamp-crush and I was quite star struck when I met him at a convention :) and yes you can kill a vampire with a pencil through the heart as they did it On an episode of Buffy( jerry is 1000 years old so yes pretty big age gap but yes she's kinda in a trance which is called "thrall" and a lot of vamps do this in older films :))
Great reaction Katie, cheers! Yeah Bishop.. Vasquez.. and Hudson from Aliens in this one :) The way they react to sunlight is a bit similar to Blade.. I think it may have taken inspiration for the vampires-in-the-sun effects from this film
It's interesting how different each vampire film can be. In one film the vampire life can seem so alluring and cool..and in another film it's just a curse and you're a slave to the dark and depraved. Even though the rules are basically always the same..there's all these different routes a story can take. There's more polished and larger budget and more popular vampire films but this one feels more real than nearly all. Vampire "kids" are the creepiest. Possibly the only vampire film that brings up blood transfusions? Gotta love the electric guitar and synthesizers used in the 80's music. Haha even with Hans Zimmer composing a mountain top scene you'll hear an electric guitar playing! "Finger lickin' good!" RIP Billy! For those who don't know, a hog leg is a sawed off shotgun...well usually a shotgun. You'll hear the phrase a lot in older films with barroom brawls. It looks like a hog leg. haha
KATIE!! We are happy to see you!! My family and I were getting worried but glad to see you doing videos again hope your condition has gotten somewhat better
So far, no reactor has ever picked up on Bruce's "Moe Howard" "Why You" when he's attacked in the pit. Being a Three Stooges fan, I roared at this line. True story, when my brother, sister and i saw this in a 1/2 filled movie theater, my brother and I were the only two in the place laughing our heads off. I think the rest of the audience hadn't seen the first two movies and couldn't figure out what they were sitting through.
The reason the rape scene was so sick both of them guys were mentally subnormal 😂 Don't call him Mr Romance for nothing! What an Herbert. Noticed on a couples review she squirms what kinda film is this? 😂 Boyfriend is smirking 😂.
Near dark is criminally underseen. Of the big three 80’s vampire films, lost boys, fright, night, and near dark, this one definitely does not get as much attention.
Hi Katie glad to see you are better and good to see you back Alot of James Cameron connection here Kathryn Bigerlow was married to him briefly All 3 leads been Aliens and Terminator films The late and sadly missed Bill Paxton Lance Hendrikson and Jenette Goldstien Also fun fact the man in the bar is in Terminator 2 Arnold takes his clothes boots an motor bike Kathryn Bigerlow has had a good career in directing including a Oscar for Hurt Locker the first woman director to do so Anyway really good to see you back and better Very Best Wishes
Hi Skeletalk, glad you're feeling better and the hair is amazing. Just looked through your collection and was surprised that The Terminator wasn't there, I was trying to avoid spoiler comments for you. Have you seen it? Lance Hendrickson and Bill Paxton are in that too as well as Michael Biehn, Hicks from Aliens. Hard to believe it was the same actress playing Diamondback and Vasquez, Jenette Goldstein is a chameleon. Great reaction, stay well
This is a great film. I'm glad I own it on DVD because I guess it's hard to find now. I became a Lance Henriksen fan back when I first started watching the TV show Millennium(1996-1999) starring Lance Henriksen in which he played a detective investigating supernatural crimes( my favorite episode of Millennium is "Somehow Satan got behind me")and is a TV show from the same creator of The X-Files(another great show I loved watching as a kid) I'm glad you enjoyed this film. I'm glad to hear your doing better with your ❤️. Stay safe and healthy Katie 😊
In the dvd special features they said that the director wanted the zombie makeup to be inspired by the Mummies of Guanajuato, they also show the concept art of those drawings they came up with during pre production.
Love this film. Director Kathryn Bigelow would go on to make films such as Point Break, The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty. She also became the first woman to win a best director Oscar for The Hurt Locker.
I saw this when it first came out. My sister told me they didn't use the word vampire on purpose, almost like it was considered taboo. Bill Paxton is hilarious, he stop a train on the tracks wearing his bloody face makeup and tells the conductor that he's coming from an accident as a joke and got in trouble with the police. 😅
Sending you the best, most positive wishes for your health. We are all pulling for you! And this film was (and is) notable for having three of the stars from _Aliens,_ who are really just part of the James Cameron stock company, lol. Lance Henriksen was in _Aliens_ and _Terminator,_ Bill Paxton was in _Terminator, Aliens_ and _Titanic,_ and Jenette Goldstein was in _Aliens, Terminator II,_ and _Titanic._ Director Kathryn Bigelow married James Cameron after this film was made, and he later produced her film _Strange Days,_ which I highly recommend. Bigelow went on to become the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director for _The Hurt Locker_ (2009).
You've completed the ultimate 80's vampire trilogy (imo) Fright Night, The Lost Boys and now, Near Dark. So glad you liked this, and so glad to hear you are getting better treatment for your health. Never apologize for a more normalized heart rate :) That's what we all want for you and continued better health, always. "We keep odd hours..." :) All the best!
Sorry, I forgot to name which 3 where in Aliens. Lance Henriksen (Bishop), Bill Paxton (Pvt.Hudson), & Janette Goldstein (Pvt.Vasquez). Thank you for the reaction, it was great as always. Can't wait to see your video, & by the way Tim Thomerson played the dad & stared in Trancers & Dollman to name a couple, which you may want to give a view some time. All of us here love you too. Keep up the good work & congratulations on getting better. We need you around for a long time to view movies & react. LoL
Great reaction, Katie, I'm really glad that you liked this film, it's still one of my favourite Vampire films today. I'm so happy that you've got your heart medication sorted, I hope that things will continue to improve for you.
glad to see you again skele and you too albert. zen hugs and best wishes for your surgeries and health katie. oh and love your hair color the actor you recognized is lance henriksen: bishop in aliens; the father in pumpkinhead [which you should watch]; he was the star of the series millenium. the late bill paxton, spur boy [also aliens & predator 2] is also in it well remember american werewolf in london was in the moors [england i think]
As much as I love Jason and Michael, they can't go up against each other because then you have two main characters that don't talk. It really limits the storytelling. This one worked because, while Jason is silent, Freddy never shuts up.
Ive heard this new FIRST OMEN out is promising, said to be the best since this original. I suspect it will be a ROSEMARY'S BABY type job, BUT I don't mind that. I'M of Irish descent on my mother's side (& a non violent Republican) you should look at the WHICKER MAN, DON'T LOOK NOW & VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED from 1960 it has the same...aura/atmosphere about it as THE OMEN also NIGHT/CURSE OF THE DEMON to do with Roons & curses fire Demons
If no one mentioned this , the film designer is William Stout, an excellent artist in his own right, I have a few of his books he also did work designing Dinosaur artworks. But check his art out.
I wished Sex Machine (real name Aidan Tanner like the From Dusk Till Dawn TV series) didn’t became a vampire. Imagine his story as a Vietnam vet (Tom Savini is a real-life Vietnam veteran) discovering a village massacre committed by vampires who murdered Viet Cong and regular Vietnamese villagers and how this links well to the events of this story. Frost - the other Vietnam veteran with his lucky cigar - would’ve become a vampire by some other vampire and turn into the vampire chupacabra monster that would’ve got his ass beat by Kate and Sex Machine.
As an artist, I think you’d massively enjoy the 1977 version of Suspiria!! The lighting, color, and sets are incredible. The remake is very well done too, but it has an opposite take on the color where everything is muted and darker in tone.
It was cool seeing you react to this as an artist. There were moments where you looked inspired by the practical effects. Thanks for watching this movie.
