Imo this film had 4 main leads and the rest were ancillary side characters. Ana and Michael (while not having character arcs) were relatable as your average joes. Ken and Cj have proper arcs and were my fav characters. I like this film. It’s a fun, zombie romp that doesn’t take itself too seriously. I feel it would have served better as a self contained IP instead of a remake. And for clarification in 1992 we had Peter Jackson’s Braindead so the 90’s wasn’t completely devoid of great zombie flicks.

Ouch! That was brutal😔 In all seriousness, while I do really like this movie, you’re right about everything essentially I saw it when I was in high school and while I did take issue with running zombies I still thought they were effective in invoking dread. It also was kind of the first movie I ever saw in which main character immunity was arguably NOT a factor. I was familiar enough with these characters to have their rather abrupt demises take some effect but you’re right, it’s near impossible to flesh them out when there’s so damn many. On the other hand though it was very fast paced: the action, the chaos, the characters’ deaths of course. It may not be up there with the first but it did effectively make me feel uneasy. Basically, you could argue it’s dark and somewhat brutally realistic in terms of outcome. You could say they make bad decisions but it almost if not officially works for this movie because again they’re striving for shock and to be fair the anxiety this universe creates can easily prompt these choices. I mean I guess when you stop to think about it, sure, it makes no sense that they’d leave the mall but as I’ve pretty much said twice already, I think, the fast pace and the anxiety is a good distraction

I honestly dig this movie. Its definitely imperfect but I feel like the different ideas presented are kinda cool. I turn off my brain with this movie the same way I do with Marvel films. It's all dumb fun to me. Really love the special feature bit on Andy. The original Dawn is still top 5 movies for me.

I thought time would make me appreciate this movie but my favorite was the last part where we just see what's happening through a camcorder. Maybe the film should have been made that way. Just like the promos and the "lost extras".

they should have made the main character a goth girl named Dawn. So then on top of everything the title is a pun.

I actually enjoyed both Dawn Of The Dead (2004), and Sawn Of The Dead (2004).

Songs to wear pants to in 2023, about to be 2024. Time flies man. Anyway this whole movie is redeemed by that one scene of the dude talking trash about 9mm and liking .357 mag.

Army of the Dead makes this movie look like the original Dawn

I'd imagine the characters were given some kind of gimmick or trait to quickly help distinguish them, rather than build an emotional connection to them, just as having so many was supposed to allow for more kills in this version being more action oriented (makes you respect the original, still, for being more a slow burn and character driven story). The 'headshot only' thing may have been a rule for Romero zombies but also to provide some semblance of a challenge, but the last act definitely took that rule and went "Ah fack it" (thanks for reminding how Romero highlighted how difficult it'd actually be for most people). The reason to leave the mall certainly feels more like 'checking a box' and probably was rather rushed...and forced (what the daughter did trying to save the dog has got to be the most infuriating part for any fan of the 2004 film). May not agree with all of the main points, but certainly respect where they're coming from. 👍 You actually made me want to go back and rewatch the original to see what other details I may have missed that there are to enjoy. 🤔

Even after all these years this is still one of my favorite. The opening scenes of the husband and daughter turning. The car t boning another into the gas pumps and the huge explosion. The whole movie rocks til this day. Just my opinion though.

Like I said do really enjoy the beginning, it's intense and scary, I just wish the whole movie could have kept that tone.

I like this movie because as you said, it came after a zombie dry spell like 28 Days Later did. I also agree with your points. Its bot a great movie but it reminds me of where I was when in came out. The worst character of all was the main character chick though. All she did was walk around judging the others.

It was forgettable. That movie was so anticipated back then but for a Romero movie it was mediocre and it has that 2000-era horror quality to it where everything is just brightly lit when its supposed to be dark. I saw that movie once or twice and didn't bother anymore.

It is appropriate that is resembles a Resident Evil Movie George made an effort to make each of his living dead films resemble the common horror films of the time. It’s also appropriate for the film to resemble Resident Evil because he was meant to write the first resident evil movie. I still enjoyed it

The best zombie movie of the 90's is Peter Jackson's Braindead. Maybe the only good one? Sorry Night of the Living Dead Remake fans...
