The CALCULATE function is THE most powerful function in Excel Power BI and DAX. Many struggle with this function and get frustrated because it's difficult to picture what's going on. In this video I'm going to explain CALCULATE in simple terms and with a single word! I use Excel and do the explaining with a Pivot Table (Power Pivot), but the same concept applies to Power BI as well.

I am prepping for the DA 100 exam and both classes I have taken have not given very good explanations of the CALCULATE function. They expect you to understand it from what they give you. This is by far THE BEST explanation of it! Now I get it and will be searching out more of your videos on it! THANK YOU!!

This was exactly what I needed for some data analysis at work - comparing several sites' time-based performance that was a percentage for each, along with the overall organization on the same pivot-chart. I left work stumped on how to do this and happened to see this video in my feed when I got home - BANG, epiphany!!! This video nailed what I was looking for, and I didn't need any other resources to get the analysis done. Perfect presentation and perfect timing for me. Thank you so much for all that you do! Nice explanation of the calculate function but I feel that you should have also pointed out that calculate can be used to remove filters as well as add futher filters. Both are very useful things to do.

Very, very nice ! An average difficult concept was explained with simple words, and visual aids. This is a very good foundation, anyone can start building more and more nested functions, within CALCULATE. You did it in the right way, starting from basics. There are many experts our there, knowing very well many DAX things, but just few of them are able to explain and make other people understand. You are one of them, dear Leila. I also love this short inserts with Stewie Griffin, really funny ! :-D.

great explanation of the Filter Context (local pivot filters overriding the CALCULATE filter (which in Power BI with no filter tables, the slicers override the Calculate function). and wonderful demo of whats really happening under the hood of CALCULATES intrinsic filters. I did an excel/powerPivot/Dax course it was good, but I will sign up for yours as well having experienced how well you articulate and video. Will be fun to learn more with insightful perspectives.

Didn't understand why you'd use this function vs just pivot until I saw the filtered data next to unfiltered data and then yes, mind blown. Used to have to do several pivots and do lookups to get that. Thanks!

true M is a big area of mystery with little learning material in depth and useful. there is one 3 part course on Udemy I bought it but havent used it yet.
