The first year with TBR (2021), my group wasn't too excited. The second year through (2022) one of the ladies said, "Now that I've read through the Bible, I feel ready to study it." Here we are in 2023, our third time through and one of the ladies said, "We need to do this every year." It has been so wonderful to see each of us grow in our knowledge and love for Him.

My God-shot: Joshua 24:13 says “I gave you a land you did not labor for and cities you did not build…”. Isn’t that how God works time and time again? God gives us what we aren’t capable of building on our own: health, strong relationships, prosperity, strength. God builds and cultivates where we simply cannot. He is the designer and creator of all things in our life. Praise you Lord. Glory to God.

In 22:5 it says, “But take careful heed to do the commandments and the law which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, to LOVE the LORD your God, to WALK in all His ways, to KEEP His commandments, to HOLD FAST to Him, and to SERVE Him with ALL your heart and with ALL your soul. Notice the order of these commandments. Love is mentioned first for a reason. It has to come first. Why? Because if we do all the things in this list: doing the commandments, walking in His ways, serving Him without loving Him first it turns into legalism. Serving and obeying without loving Him is legalism. And speaking from experience it’s exhausting! I know because I did this for years! I wasn’t in love with Him. I knew what His laws said, but I wasn’t in love with Him until I got into His Word and His Word got into me. This Bible Study has made me fall more in love with Him day by day as I look for HIM! Looking for His characteristics and writing them down in my Bible next to the verses and looking for what He loves and hates…it’s just awesome! ❤️❤️ He’s where the JOY is!

In reading this verse, I also think the first step is to choose. Choose to believe, choose to trust, choose to love God. Choose Jesus. Choose to follow. Choose to serve. Choose to do good or not. It is a great reminder everyday. Choose. “And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”” ‭‭Joshua‬ ‭24‬:‭15‬ ‭ESV‬‬

I find it telling and convicting that in 24:23 Joshua has to tell the people, even after all that God has done for them, to “throw away the foreign gods among you…” I find it telling that Joshua knows some of the people keep idols in their homes. I find this convicting in that even though I strive to serve God every day, I wonder if there are things in my life that I put before God, when He should be first always, because obviously He’s where the joy is. 🙂

It was God who fought for His people (Josh 23:3,10). He fights for us today too. We have victory in Him- victory in Jesus. In Chapter 24, I saw all the things God did, all the verbs listed: He took, led, gave (v 3); sent, afflicted (v 5); put, brought, did (v 7); delivered (v 10); protected (v 17), drove out (v 18). It is He who did all these things and does them today. It is not of ourselves that we could take credit for anything. It's all Him. 🙌🏽

I agree!!! I want to spend the rest of my days reading through the Bible like this. This also year number 2 with this plan. :) Your name, "Not Today, Satan" was the phrase that was put on my heart 5 years ago that got me up and going each morning to stay devoted to Bible study. I always had excuses. My best friend and I reunited and we were talking about how hard daily study is. She mentioned that phrase and instantly I knew I had no more excuses to not be in the word every single day. Not today, Satan. :) Jesus wins, and He fuels me with all that I need.

God calls us to “cleave unto Him” (Josh 23:8, KJV), or “cling to Him” (NLT). There’s the old saying about new marriage, where we “leave and cleave” and that’s appropriate in considering how God wants us to cling to Him like a betrothed spouse-faithfully, and with a servant’s heart. Look at how Joshua always refers to Moses as “the servant of God,” and in his final words, he calls the people to not “cling to the customs” of the other nations (23:12), but “choose who you will serve” (Josh 24:15); “as for me and my family, we will serve the LORD.” Clinging to God (and our spouse) means serving wholeheartedly, in the joy of being where you were always meant to be.

This crucifixion Friday I would like to share a prayer with my fellow TBR readers. I am so grateful to have found this plan. It is my second year reading through the bible with TLC and im loving it more and MORE. Thank you Lord for placing this on her heart and empowering her with the boldness to do this. Thank you, Tara for the daily encouragement in each Recap. Sunday is coming y'all!! For he is not here, He is Risen! BLESSED ASSURANCE Jesus, I grieve that the torture and sorrow You endured on the cross were necessary to save humanity. Because You didn’t want me enslaved to fear, anxiety, or sin-You sacrificed Yourself so that Love could win. It’s Love that hung upon the cross and gave up everything to rescue me. “It is finished” was a cry of victory, because You defeated everything that held me in captivity. Because of Your sacrifice, I can experience intimacy with You forever. Thank You! Help me to know You more, and to reach people with the hope found in You. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

I love that God took the time to remind the Israel nation, through Joshua, what He has done for them. He is very clear to tell them that it was HIM. HE took them, led them, gave them, plagued the Egyptians, and brought them out. HE gave, destroyed, and delivered. Verses 14 and 15 have become richer over the past few years for me as I read how clear Joshua stated the ultimatum. Choose HIM or choose evil. Praise God for His faithfulness and for His reminders of all that He has done. Praise Him for using people to mentor, guide, and remind us to keep our eyes fixed on Him.

God provided for his children land, cities, vineyards and more, that they did not labour for. God is well able to care for us beyond our cares and worries and striving. We should be careful to incline our hearts towards him (intentionally seek after God) and be careful to obey Him . We are created for His purposes, to love and to walk with Him. We are called to be friends of God, not just believers, not just followers ... but friends of God. 😊

God never fails. He never disappoints. He's not a man that he should lie neither the son of man that he should repent. But if a man is not in alignment with God that can slow down or delay the actualisation of the promises of God. Joshua has final speech to The Israelites, reminding do choose to serve The Lord. Joshua dies and is buried. “Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:14‭-‬15

What I noticed today was in Ch 23:11-13 when Joshua was warning them not to mix with the people of the land because they would become a snare and a trap, a whip to their sides and thorns in their eyes. This sounds a lot like what Jesus endured at the hands of the Roman soldiers. They beat Him with a whip and pushed a crown of thorns on His head which I am sure poked down into His eyes. I think it's just one more example of Jesus becoming a curse for us.

In chapter 22, with the land inheritances complete, the tribes of Gad, Reuben, and the half tribe of Manasseh set to return to the other side of the Jordan River (east). They did as they promised in helping their brethren secure their land. Joshua reminds them to be faithful to the Lord. Once these tribes return home, they build an altar. Scripture says that this altar was of an "imposing size" (22:). The rest of Israel learns of this altar, thinks that grave disobedience has occurred, and they declare war.i believe that God intervened with what happened next. Phinehas, the priest, along with 10 chiefs, crossed the Jordan to see the altar for themselves and find out exactly why it was built. The trans-Jordan tribes explain that the altar was built as a witness. The altar serves as a testimony that they will not be forgotten and that they are a part of the nation of Israel. Once everything is explained, Phinehas and the chiefs were satisfied and returned home. In chapter 23, Joshua gives a charge to the leaders of Israel to remain faithful to the Lord. In verses 6-8, it says, "Therefore, be very strong to keep and to do all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, turning aside from it neither to the right hand nor to the left, that you may not mix with these nations remaining among you or make mention of the names of their gods or swear by them or serve them or bow down to them, but you shall cling to the Lord your God just as you have done to this day." Joshua wanted to ensure that he gave them final instructions since he is about to die. In chapter 24, Joshua gathers the people at Shechem and renews the covenant with them. He gives a summary of their history, and then he charges them to make a decision on whom they will serve. Yahweh, the Lord, or some other "god." I find it interesting that Joshua says to the people twice to put away their idols (24:14, 23). That tells me that even after everything that's transpired, there were still people among the Israelites who were not wholly devoted to serving the Lord. Joshua even says, But Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the Lord, for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm and consume you, after having done you good. (24: 19-20)” Those words are an unfortunate truth for Israel's future. The story ends telling us that Joshua died at 110 years old. Israel followed the Lord all the days of Joshua and all the days of the elders who lived after him. The bones of Joseph are buried in the land of Shechem. Eleazar, the priest, dies and is buried in Gibeah. God is all through the pages of today's reading. God is faithful. He brought Israel to the promised land. He went before them and fought for them. He gave Israel victory over their enemies. This speaks to God's power and authority. But, the Lord is also a jealous God. He commands our commitment and obedience. When we willingly choose not to serve the Lord, He promises that will be consent. What's happening in the world today are signs of the end times. As believers in the Lord and His Son Jesus Christ, we can live in hope because this world is not our home. This current world is temporary of a greater glory, the new heaven and the new earth, to come.

It truly is the end of an era. It seemed like with the death of the major people in each of the preceding books, we were already were well acquainted with the next leader/main person. But with Joshua’s death I don’t feel that. I’ve been sad each time to read about their deaths.
