Day 2 Fishing the Welsh Open Pairs Festival

The Awful Angler

It's safe to say that this style of fishing was a steep learning curve. But following on from day 1, I had a good idea of the changes that needed to be made.
The changes proved to be a success and we were in to the fish from the first cast. Unfortunately the Yuki Mono dad bought from Veals Mail Order let us down time and time again. A total of 8 snap offs, and the near impossibility of tying on new shock leader, meant we missed maybe 1.5 hours of fishing time. Now I'm not saying that lost us a win, but it is fair to say it ruined our day's fishing. And its also fair to say it put me in a foul mood 🤣
All that aside, I really enjoyed the competition. Fishing alongside such a high calibre of angler really opens your eyes to improvements on so many levels.
I can't recommend getting involved in a competition like this enough, either through your local club or even join the facebook group and sign up to WOPF 2024.

Well done alex and your dad. A baptism of fire into the world of match fishing. Its a totally different ball game to freelance fishing. Best place to learn new skills, rigs an tricks. Which will help you going foreward in your pleasure sessions. Massive respect to you both for giving it a go, especially as its not your way of fishing. Keep at it.
@theawfulangler

I'm definitely keen to keep it up Kev. Maybe see you out and about at one some time. Like you say, great places to learn, and made me realise just how monotone my fishing has become with constant pennel rigs 😅

Another fab video Alex you gave the competition a go that's all you can do and gain some knowledge off other anglers, fishing the comps is never easy as like yourself and your dad I pleasure fish. That's bad snapping off 7 times the knot I use for joining mono main line to mono shock leader is the spider hitch knot and ive had no issues with it. You both gave it 100% different distances, different baits of cocktails, big and small baits, looking forward to your next comp when you take on the holderness cod father good luck and tight lines 👍🎣🎣🎣

Got to be in it to win it, and it’s a great experience to see how other people do it. As far as Veals are concerned,you can’t beat them in my opinion. Although it looks like the line was at fault give the uni-knot a try,6 turns of the braid and 4 on the mono,dead easy and quick to tie 👍🎣🐟

I have to say that some of the cheap feathers you can get are mostly from China and complete rubbish and dangerous to use unless you are on a boat just dropping down. I've been making my own for years now with foil tape and they works just as well without falling apart or snapping off. Looks like Tommy did a few days at Pwllheli too Alex and had a few new species but I really don't rate the place but as always I enjoyed your video. As for Veals I bought a rod stand from them once and the part for the rod but was missing. Bought some lures from them and paid for express delivery and they sent the wrong ones then they sent to correct ones standard 2nd class when I needed them for a trip away. As for the line you mentioned I've had exactly the same problem. I think it's either old stock or they are storing it somewhere too warm and the stuff is perishing and becoming brittle. Do have anymore competitions lined up by any chance my friend.
@theawfulangler
@theawfulangler Год назад
Yeah I was talking to Tommy about pwllheli, it's a small fish venue, but can throw up some good stuff on its day. No more comps planned, but I'm always a sucker for a spur of the moment entry if I see something that takes my fancy 😅 so watch this space

As always, honest video's! I think EVERY sea angler has had a tronixpro item of some sort in their box! ALL of mine went into the recycling after your long ago video. As for Veals, very informative videos, but honestly, wouldn't buy anything from them! Maybe you've just been unlucky with their stuff, but I'm not going to risk it. Don't accept a replacement of anything. Just get your money back buddy. It's great to see the old chap out with you again. Take it easy and never apologise. That's fishing!!!

Veals are as old as time. They know their stuff, but yeah, I've been bitten a couple of times now. They have replaced it with a larger spool of a different brand line. And as its my dad's order, and he's happy, I'll stick with my braid Thanks very much 😅

I make my own rigs for Mackerel and small Pollack, using small luminous eels, size 2 hooks although most of these eels come with hooks anyway, 4 to a trace, all knots tied yourself, never snap off, you can even use crisp packets and whip strips on.
@theawfulangler
@theawfulangler Год назад
They sound spot on matey. The last time I targeted mackerel, it was in Scotland, and on really light lure gear with dexters and small metals.

@@theawfulangler My Fury FX420 arrived today, may christen it tomorrow or Thursday. Seems to have quite a large portion of spigot showing on section 2 into the Butt section (42mm), I know you have some for wear but seems bigger than any other rod I have had. I have sent Akios a query via email as Simon responded to an earlier question about Stockists as none in my area. Got it with the Fireloop on deal from Tony's Tackle, good price hopefully hear back tomorrow. I know your new one seemed to have a larger gap nearly twice that of your older one, at least it looked that way on the video where you introduced it, both next to each other on the tripod "Cod hunt - Runswick Bay" vid at 4 mins. Will probably slide in a bit more after a few sessions but would like to make sure before it snaps at join with only 68mm of spigot into the Butt section. Tight lines.
@theawfulangler
@theawfulangler Год назад
68mm in to the spigot sounds like more than enough, although I'm an aerospace engineer where 0,1mm is huge 🤣 I'm sure Simon will get back to you beforehand but I'll check mine over the weekend and let you know.
@DelDredd
@DelDredd Год назад
@@theawfulangler Thanks a lot, I have some rods that do not have that much but those are light spinners etc, I know my old 12ft Multiplier rods have 100mm or more inserted but those have spigot on butt section and insert into top section, still got 10-15 mm free and those are over 30 years old, not used all time though, still in good nick, Daiwa Paul Kerry Supercast Mk1 and Mk2 with ABU 6500 reels. Used to be in RAF - Air Radar Tech and then assimulated to Avionics (Radar, Comms and Flight Intruments) so know what you mean about measurements. Will look at my Penn Wrath 14ft tomorrow.
@DelDredd
@DelDredd Год назад
My Penn Wrath was 95mm inserted with 20mm spare, got reply from Simon, reckoned it may be some Lacquer overspray and if I did not mind and had some Wet and Dry would probably fix it and he would send me a free gift as the Postage would be excessive to send back and then return. I thought of a bit of a Rub down with fine wet and dry anyway but checked first in case it was an issue they would like back. Any way some careful rubbing with P1200 in stages sorted it on inside of Ferrule in Butt and the Spigot on Second Section. Goes in 91 with spare of 20 now and still nice tight fit. Free gifts arrived as well, Finger Stall for casting some Reel and Spool Bands and some stickers, will come in nice and handy.

Not had any trouble with veals m8 I fish 2 or 3 days a week mainly matchs I use mainly gemini breakaway and trident terminal tackle I use 12lb and 15lb line on my reels which are mainly multipliers I use asso torneo in 12lb and asso classic in 15lb also diawa tornament in 15lb with 70lb shock leader on my fixed spool I've got 40lb whiplash braid with 100lb braid shock leader ive had no trouble with any of these I backcast so they are all under a lot of strain hope that helps
@theawfulangler
@theawfulangler Год назад
40lb Whiplash and a leader is my go to. And daiwa tournament was what I wanted to get but dad decided he knew best...maybe that's what 🤬 me off the most 😅 Like I say veals have been around as long as I've been fishing, they know their stuff, and they have replaced the line (for what I'm yet to see), so fair play. Does seem to be a mixed bag of comments though so maybe quality control in some of these brands just isn't up to scratch

Hi Alex I use Veals and find their service good. If you need to use mono again try Varivas sport line with Varivas shock leader coupled with a standard leader knot. I've been using this stuff for years and its never let me down. Good luck.

HI Alex great video as always. if your after some decent line in my own opinion as I been using it for many years now and its never let me down is the varivas in 25lb I fish over heavy rock marks for most of my fishing and on add occasion I fish clean beaches then I go right down to 12lb , fanatic line . but everyone is different just like marmite
@theawfulangler
@theawfulangler Год назад
Hey buddy! The stuff veals sent as a replacement is varivas so 🤞🏼 it's better. I will say though, it's 0.1mm thicker for the same breaking strain.
@matthewanslow7685
@matthewanslow7685 Год назад
Unlucky mate, a spare spool with 25-30lb straight through allows you to keep fishing, albeit at shorter range when weed is like that. Good service from Veals but I've long binned any TP stuff, stick with Gemini or breakaway. Mackeral rigs from Mustad and Shakespeare seem to be ok, retying top and bottom knots to links or swivels. That line is utter crap too, daiwa sensor, Berkely or varivas for mono. Good luck.
@theawfulangler
@theawfulangler Год назад
Daiwa was the line i wanted to get, and Varivas is the replacement veals have sent through, so hopefully, it is much better. Personally though, I'm glad to be back on braid 🤣
@chriscourt7816
@chriscourt7816 Год назад
Them Hokia rigs often only have a 15lb body, thats probably why your cracking off, you can get them with a 35lb body and as long as you dont smash it too hard , or its a case og getting the larger tinsel ones as they normally have a 50lb body.. they are all crap though.

Heya Greg! There's been some tough fishing lately, considering it's the middle of summer! I did query whether they had outsourced their purchasing to a third party, but was reliably informed they managed all their own purchasing directly. They have been around as long as I can remember, so you would expect them to have the right contacts.
