Today, I want to build on the pleasure vs happiness understanding and the understanding of habits, and how to change them, with a dive inside your brains.
I want to take a complicated biology lesson and make it really understandable. To do that, we are going to combine some stuff we learnt over the last few days, and over lay it on a deeper understanding of your brain.
Most people think of our brain as just one single organ. But we should really think of the brain as having multiple distinct areas.
WHEN IT COMES TO HELPING you CHANGE your RELATIONSHIP WITH FOOD and to regain control of your health, and for you to enjoy real freedom, the two parts that are most important to consider is the area that's is known as the limbic and the one that is right behind your forehead, known as the prefrontal cortex.
The limbic part of your brain is millions of years old and drives your primal behaviour. It is responsible for behaviours such as eating, drinking, procreating, nurturing the young, and taking flight or fight when under threat. It is the emotional part of your brain. Without it you would not survive. It’s the primal brain and all mammals have one.
The prefrontal cortex, however, is rational, more concerned with thinking about and strategizing for the future. It's the area of your brain that is involved in communicating with other people, accessing memories consciously and, regarding food, planning for future meals. Very few animals have the type of prefrontal cortex that humans have, that’s why we call it the human brain or the intelligent brain.
From an evolutionary standpoint, this particular part of the brain has only been developed for a much shorter period.
When we are overweight, it indicates that for many people, their primal brain, the limbic brain- is steering more of their behaviours.
If we are being led by our primal brain - much of our focus resembles that of our Stone Age ancestors.
Our primal brains didn't know when we might next eat, so it sees all food as a life or death decision.
For 2 million year, our primal brain thought about food as a survival mechanism, and the threat of starvation back then were very, very real.
if you fast forward to today -where we have access to food 24/7 - you start to see the problem we face.
Again it’s not your fault that you are overweight, eating food, as much as you can, is what your primal brain, your limbic brain is wired to do.
For you to lose the weight, which you will, it is a matter of increasing the communication between your Primal brain and your intelligent brain.
If we can switch on the communication between the two and recognise which one is in control, then you will lose your weight for good.
We have to get your prefrontal cortex in good working order and like an engine make sure its firing on all cylinders. It needs the right oil, literally. I mean it seriously does, there are cooking oils and fats in certain foods that will make it sluggish and other that will make it fire wonderfully, making it easier to be in control.

Wow, I wish you'd drop the background 'music' (more like white noise). Not even children need these gimmicks in order to coax them to listen. Interesting series though.
