Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries in older adults. Balance naturally declines after age 40 and if you are over 65 you have a 25% chance of having a fall each year!
The statistics are sobering, yet there is hope!
Balance is simply a combination of 5 factors:
1. Strength
2. Reflexes
3. Proprioception (sensing your body in space)
4. Inner ear
5. Vision
While all of these begin to decline naturally after age 40, there is no reason why they can't be improved at any age!
This Free 5 Day Balance Course incorporates proven techniques such as:
- Gentle Yoga
- Tai Chi & Qi Gong
- Functional Fitness
- Fall Prevention
- Fall Resilience
Our techniques are endorsed by several major health organizations:
Centers for Disease Control:
"Do strength and balance exercises that make your legs stronger such as yoga and Tai Chi."
National Council on Aging:
"To prevent falls...find a good balance and exercise program. Look to build balance, strength, and flexibility."
NIH National Institute on Aging
"Strength and balance exercises can help you prevent falls and avoid the disability that may result from falling."
Nate & Mikey are Balance Coaches and have over 25 years of experience between them in Yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, and Fall Prevention.
We are passionate about preventing falls and reducing their impact by teaching balance training and fall resilience.

This session was definitely a challenge! It helps me when Nate turns his back to us so I can figure out which hand/leg goes which direction. Definitely looking forward to tomorrow's session. And truly appreciate having these sent each day. It is definitely keeping me on track and keeping me accountable to someone besides myself. Thank you!!!

Yes they are great moves - with some practice you can start to walk all over the place with them!

Ran out of room on the backwards walking segment. A bit tough for me to stay in sync. I could not figure out the breathing sequence during that portion either. Love the tapping to end. Looking forward to day 5. Thank you!!

Yes - you might need to find a place with more space for the full experience! Usually breath in as the body expands and breath out as it contracts - like your lungs! Enjoy!

That was really good, but was challenging for sure. I kept getting a painful hitch in my left hip, so had to decrease range of motion for the one-legged exercises and use the wall. Any good acupressure points or further stretches to release hips joints? I use your pounding technique daily, but seems I need something even deeper. Thanks, Nate and Mikey! Looking forward to Day 5!

Yes, modifications for any pains is recommended - just reduce the intensity, frequency or duration of each exercise until you find the sweet spot!

Finally got back to the 5 Day Balance Course doing Day 4 (Tai Chi). Noticed my balance is really off standing with weight on left foot. Broke metatarsal about 10 years ago and hope to strengthen that foot and ankle with the kicking exercise.

Had a difficult time following the chi gong but then I usually do. I need a class, knowing right or left foot or arm etc. will look locally since I do want to learn. One question. What is the benefit of closing eyes when doing aa balance posture. My balance is good with eyes open but eyes closed is problematic. At age 77 can it be improved?

Yes, Tai Chi and Qi Gong can be trick to get the right and left in the proper order. I wouldn't worry too much about it, as long as you're moving in general it is still effective. In fact, there are variations to almost every Tai Chi and Qi Gong movement that is the exact same thing but with opposite hands or feet! The benefit of closing the eyes which practicing balance work is that you take away the dependance we often have on using vision to correct and maintain balance. This makes the other systems (like the inner ear and proprioceptive nerves) work harder and become more capable to help your balance. Now, it's important to only close your eyes if you feel confident that you aren't going to fall and if you feel yourself losing balance, then open them immediately. With practice you'll notice that your balance gets better even with eyes closed. It's also important to practice this because sometimes you'll be in a dark room, or walking at night and you can't rely on your vision. So the more you can improve your balance without vision the better off you are. Does that make sense?
