Regarding your aim to learn every opening ten moves deep, not even Grandmasters know that much theory. It's more important, especially at the intermediate level, to follow opening principles and just get your pieces on to good squares. Learning opening theory is only useful if you understand the ideas and nuances behind it all.

Plying theory for 10 moves on multiple openings? That’s an even loftier goal than reaching 2000..

Don't be disappointed, your opponent played that ending way above his ELO, you were better but the lag in tme is killing you. Please, consider extend your games to 15 minutes

It's definitely a good idea to learn openings. However, this will only help you sometimes. Especially when you are playing black your opponent is always likely to surprise you (such as in this game). I have seen GMs play where they know the line 15+ moves deep. But I have also seen GMs where they are saying they don't really know the theory 5-6 moves in, especially in an obscure line of an opening they don't play often. Remember after each side has moved three times there are about 64 million possible positions. I have mentioned before that I am about 1800 (my highest rating was about 2000) but I know very little opening theory. I know the ideas behind some openings and some of the key themes and that helps. So, for example, I know that when I play the Caro-Cann in many lines the pawn breaks c5 and f6 are things I might find useful. But what helps me more is playing according to opening principles. Take this game at 4:55. It's a trappy opening and already has loads of tactics. I don't know it at all. As you saw in the analysis you have cxd6 because it opens up Qc1+ for you. In fact, if you play cxd6 you are +2 after half a dozen moves which is pretty spectacular. But after the move you played you are -1. But in this position, you have moved your bishop twice (breaking the rule of moving each piece once only in the opening), you have not developed a knight (breaking the rule of moving knights before bishops), you have moved your queen early (breaking the rule of not moving the queen too early) and you placed a pawn on c6 which is the natural square for the knight. So in half a dozen or so moves you have broken 3-4 opening principles. In other games you often launch an attack before your king is safe, also breaking rules. And you often play your knight to the rim (where not only is it dim but to do that you have moved it twice in the opening). Of course, rules are meant to be broken and sometimes it makes sense to move a piece twice in the opening. However, the point I am making is that as a general rule, if you try to play principled moves, you won't go too far wrong even in openings where you don't know the theory. Sorry for the long comment. I know it annoys people. It's just my view. I agree with you that chess is hard. There is no easy way to get to 1500 never mind 2000.

Entertaining game.. your oppenent seemed to know that funky opening pretty well. You handled it though.. really like the fianchetto move. A little careless with king safety at the end, should have pushed your h pawn forward to protect

29:27 lucky you didn't take the pawn like the analysis suggests cause Knc6 would not have been a good follow up.

until 2000 memorizing more than one or two openings is a waste of time, because openings don't matter at this stage, try learning the stonewall a very fun opening to play

I agree with this. Folks spend too much time on openings. Most games are won in middle/end game tactics.

That second move with the same knight violated two opening principles at once and did nothing to improve your position. When you finally castled it was too late and it cost you a whole piece. In know someone else (correctly) pointed out that principles dont always apply but here it basically lost you the game. Opponent played well though.

To improve you have to practice endgames, classical endgame. You will improve 150 to 200 points of Elo just like that. Then middlegame proncipkes. Openings , don't memorize them, but learn their principles. You don't win games with opening recipes, but their principles

Premature attackulation in the opening there. Why the second knight move before you castled queen side? FINISH YOUR DEVELOPMENT before trying to exchange pieces! ESPECIALLY when your opponent is playing an aggressive opening and is bringing his Queen into your territory.

Aint gonna happen on a regular basis. 418 games now , and casteling is not even standard yet. 2.000 is not even closing in on happening before such basics is covered. But hey , Patrick has fun and we do to , so thats just what it is really.

@LikeACosmicGumbo for lower rated players development and defence should be priorities. This is because lower rated players' main mistakes involve being too aggressive too early.

@@surf2553 tactics and I bought this book called Chess Mazes by Bruce Alberston (it’s not traditional puzzles). I stopped blundering and started seeing the entire board after I went through the puzzles in that book. It’s my single best recommendation to sub 2000 players (other than tactics tactics). I’ve done the puzzles in that book probably 3 times.

Letting in the queen-rook battery at the end seems insane to me. I know the engine wanted you to retreat the king, but couldn't you have just pushed the h pawn?

Good example of a game where your opponent uses a terrible opening but it rattled you and forced you to be even more reactive than usual (which is your primary issue- you almost never attack in a coordinated way and you only think on your time). Some general principles, like “finish your development”, need to be put aside when your opponent is being super aggressive. You had at least 3 chances to castle queenside to lessen his queen/bishop threat and start your own attack.

In hindsight, I noticed the discrepancy in the two comments and then unfairly painted them with the same brush. You’re right - yours was a constructive comment, and while it seems like Patrick has (quite graciously) acknowledged that the negative and snarky comments are unpleasant, he has also often expressed appreciation for the comments that are positive or at least constructive. Sorry for hitting you with the same obnoxious snark I was reacting to, especially when you did nothing to deserve it! And thanks for your gracious response!
