2000 rating is expert. Pick literally ANY activity in life, do it once a day with no other time devoted to it, but expect to someday become an expert…this is a strange mentality. And in chess, 200 rating points is huge. Going from 1400 to 1600 is hard, 1600 to 1800 is really hard, and 1800 to 2000 is really really really hard.

hey Patrick... just to put things into perspective, it took me around 10 years to go from 1500 to 2100... you're in for a long ride, don't get discouraged and enjoy the game 🎈
@canefan17
@canefan17 Месяц назад
About the same for me. Took me 7 years to go from 1500 to 2100. And took 10 years to go from 700 to 2100. When you hit 1500 the real grind begins. I can see that I progressed from 700 to 1500 pretty fast. But man, a slow grind once in the 1500s.

Free coach lesson for you: Study. Getting a coach is not worth your time, effort or money at this stage. Buy a book, solve puzzles, watch video lessons, attend the local chess club, do something, anything to do with chess and you will improve. Improvement comes from the studying, not the playing.

Tough game you had the right ideas. In the French the light square bishop is considered very weak. You should try to avoid letting them trade it off as much as possible. Time control. You spent 2.5 minutes on a singular move and you chose something that you didn’t calculate at all and immediately after you regretted the choice. Think about what could be improved about your position. In this case your king was still in threat of back rank mates. Create some luft! 25 percent of your total time on a non calculated move is just a way to beg to lose. This is why you didn’t have enough to time to realize their pawn was pinned. Entertaining otherwise and keep on posting
@robertrichter2654
@robertrichter2654 Месяц назад
Good call the exchange of the light square bishops in the french is a win for black as it has no scope behind the pawn chain. Ususally its a battle over the D4 pawn which fell pretty early
@danielmccachern2307
@danielmccachern2307 Месяц назад
Push the e pawn to e5 on your third move and play the advanced french as white. It is equal for black but hard to play because they will be cramped for the entire opening.

Unlucky. There were some good moments in this game but I would make the following observations. 1. It does not matter what variation of the French you play as long as you have a good enough grasp of it. I play it as Black and like to play against the Advanced Variation. As white I probably play the exchange and grab the open file. Others may view the exchange as boring. This is preference in my view. 2. In these positions look for pawn breaks. F4 towards F5 would be my idea. Either play them or play moves that support them. This as least gives you initiative which is vital in chess. 3. You mostly avoid blunders but beyond that there are forks, pins, skewers, double attacks, discovered attacks etc. This is what catches you out in my view.
@ozaman1064
@ozaman1064 Месяц назад
They couldn't have taken you with the last Knight check. After your Queen took F7 it was pinning the pawn on G7 to the KING. If you would have checked with the Knight, G7 was pinned...The king had no place to go but H8 where their Queen was taken by your Queen with no response. Game over, you win. Can't miss that. Edit...Saw that you found it in review. That's something you just have to see. Easy win.

Hiring a chess coach is a great idea. Even if you can only spare an hour a week, it will improve your level of play. My advice is to make sure they're at least an IM though, they've got to know what they're talking about.

There is nothing wrong with the exchange french. I played it for a long time, and i feel i learned a lot about symmetrical positions and piece harmony. Eventualy it became a bit to boring though, i have to admit. If you decide not to play it, you have to be ready with an alternative.
@normanjohnson2548
@normanjohnson2548 Месяц назад
Never liked this variation for white because black gets c5, undermining the pawn chain. That is what makes the French tough to play against. I like my options with the exchange variation. Just depends on your style of play…open vs closed positions.

Getting a coach is a good idea, but it's not a magic bullet. In addition to finding time for coaching sessions, you'll need to find the time (and willingness) to do the work; a coach can't do it for you.

Patrick, your analysis after the game is not helping you to get to he next level. You are not fully seeing why moves are good or bad, and you aren't fully following through to see the full scope of resulting tactics or position.

Taking way too long to develop pieces. You leave yourself no time for middle/end game (which at your level is where games are won). Trading off your good bishop for their bad bishop was really f’n bad. C3 should’ve been played so you could tuck your bishop away.

Bb5* Yuck. Get rid of your good bishop for his bad, or problem bishop, well you solved that problem, for him. You are weak on the dark squares so logically you should weaken them further. f4?! NxB, you moved it there to take it, then you fritter away your time second guessing yourself. You fell into a fork, Nf4 was correct, you first impulse. Then you saw Nf6+, but did not play it, as it works. Too bad you played well. Though black mad a lot of mistakes, and if that what rely on to win you will be stuck at a low rating forever, for as you meet better opponents, they will crush you in such positions after Qd2 for instance, retreating from the attack. You did even see it in analysis after you noticed it but rejected Nf6 in game. Thought must be cogent, directed, analytical, to achieve mastery in chess. You even said. look at the video, 23:34-23:43 (9 seconds) you found it. If he moves the king, I take his queen. you were low on time, but at least you might have won but NxR a terrible blunder on his part. You forgot your former thinking he could take the knight with the g pawn, but it is pinned. You tell yourself the pawn is pinned, it's still pinned, but you did not remember, like a goldfish seeing diver Dan for the first time, though it sees him hundreds of times a day.
