The red plant is called a snow flower or snow plant. They are apparently only found in California at higher elevations. We used to see them when we lived in the Sierras at 7200 feet. Stay safe!

Permethrin is ok to use on gear and clothing to keep the mozzies away! Not on your skin tho. I never had to use deet once on trail. Had long pants, sun hoodie, hat and sun gloves. Y'all are doing awesome! Hike on☮️

Your family is as nice as you... but then they raised you so it shows! Those mosquitoes are horrible!!! Would a strong DEET help?

You mentioned the Midwest, where are you from?

"Don't get eaten" probably didn't mean by mosquitoes, but this is just a taste of what's to come in mosquito heaven. You'll reach pockets throughout the hike, but Oregon has the conditions and the general timing of mid-July through mid-August for thru-hikers to become the daily meal for all the mosquitoes. But that experience will have to come after your first year(s) of teaching! Great video, Boujee
