I am a medical SW at a hospital and clinic.
I have the unique experience of working in the clinic and hospital settings- in the Maternal-Fetal Unit. I share with you a "slow" Friday. I hope you enjoy it!
For obvious reasons - that are explained in the intro of the video. I can't show you everything for the protection of my clients, co-workers, and self.

Thank you so much for this video! I've noticed that a lot of social work vlogs show them being the first ones in the office. What time does your shift normally start? And do you find it better to get there early?
@AuJunaeAntoinette
@AuJunaeAntoinette 2 года назад
Thanks so much for watching! Honestly I’m usually never the first one in the office. I am typically the first social worker buttt the nurses, ultrasound tech, and the secretaries are usually the first. They typically get there around 7/7:30. My shift starts at 8. I do find it better to get there a little earlier as sometimes we have a patient that comes at 8 and or sometimes staff meetings and I like to know what’s going on with any patients at the hospital and follow up with emails or calls because I just never know if it’s going to be a “slower” day or “busier” day! So I find coming to work about 10 Mins earlier allows me to settle in and get adjusted because I crack down! :)

Hey I just came across your videos. I just finished my BSW this summer and the population I would like to work in is, maternity, obstetrics, prenatal, post natal, etc. I don't even know how to get in the field....
@AuJunaeAntoinette
@AuJunaeAntoinette Год назад
Well congratulations!!! I would start in a healthcare center if possible. Check that out and see if you like the health care field. Most but all hospitals require at least a MSW. Are you planning on obtaining your masters?

@@AuJunaeAntoinette I would like to but I need to secure a good job right now. And doing the BSW took alot out of me, I can only imagine how the MSW will be.
@AuJunaeAntoinette
@AuJunaeAntoinette Год назад
@@roxanne9547 that is understandable! I think it’s a stepping stone. Secure a job as close as you can get to the medial field . If not , use your practicum to get your foot in the door once you start your MSW program !

Thank you so much for the video. Im in my last year of my BSW and I’ll be interning at a rehabilitative care facility. I plan on getting my MSW right after I graduate. What setting did you intern in? Im nervous that it’ll be kind of hard to land a job in a hospital setting after I get my MSW.
@AuJunaeAntoinette
@AuJunaeAntoinette 2 года назад
Ganaia hello! Thanks for watching! I hope you continue to watch and check in so you can see and get more content related to my progress as a professional! Most of my career over the last 7 years has been focused on substance use and the other 1/3 on families and women! So I was perfect for this position as it is an OB office that helps pregnant women with SUD. I also spent my time working in a large clinic - that had multiple locations and populations so I was already exposed and familiar with “medical SW”. I think if you can get into a clinic or doctors office ,or out patient facility you have a better chance of getting into a hospital. I also think if you can get your practicum in one of the settings listed above you will be exposed and know for sure if this is the right field for you! Getting your masters is a must and if you can get your license before you graduate or start, even better! Regardless good luck and feel free to continue to inquire and ask questions on other videos!

I appreciate you doing this video. Most videos I’ve watched barely show the actual hospital setting but you did! Thanks. I have a question though, I’m in between school social work and medical, what is your advice as a medical social worker?
@AuJunaeAntoinette
@AuJunaeAntoinette 2 года назад
My pleasure Chris! Thanks for watching! Wow, that’s a loaded question lol so much I can say.. I think that medical social work is so unique and it’s going to be a high demand in the coming years. It’s almost like a hidden gem. It’s never really a dull day and I can say that I learn so many new things each week! I often enjoy the pressure and fast pace. But most importantly I think it’s so cool to work and collaborate with other disciplines and professionals! So being open to new experiences, ppl, and information is key! Also being able to be a responsive and quick worker can also be a good tip! Maybe I’ll make a video dedicated to some of my top suggestions or advice!
@AuJunaeAntoinette
@AuJunaeAntoinette 2 года назад
Do you have anything a little bit more specific you want to know?
@Christia82
@Christia82 2 года назад
Thanks for replying. I think I would like the fast pace of a medical setting. I would like to work with diverse people as well. I’m weighing the pros and cons, really. I’ve worked as substitute teacher in a school and the vibe was different lol. Would you say the pay is one of the pros as a medical social worker? Thanks for commenting.
@AuJunaeAntoinette
@AuJunaeAntoinette 2 года назад
@@Christia82 for sure! The pay is very good and I’m now exploring Travel Social work which can be competitive pay as well! It is much like travel nursing. So you get to explore other places, people, environments, and the list goes on. I think working in a hospital setting also opens more doors for other jobs and opportunities for the future. It’s considered “elite” (from my experience) because of the care and the environment we are in. So I mean regardless you win win with either one! I would love to go back to a school setting eventually maybe one day when I settle down but the medical field is in need and also paying well.

Hi great video! I am a LMSW and interested in becoming a medical social worker. I have been working as a mental health therapist for my entire SW career. Do you have advice for how I could transition into medical social work without having experience in a medical setting?
@AuJunaeAntoinette
@AuJunaeAntoinette 2 года назад
I honestly think that you would be a strong candidate for a job! I think the trick is to look at unique or jobs in clinics, special job titles that are in a hospital. But I say go for it! Apply, interview, and see what it is you might need to push you through. I think it’s not as hard as some make it seem. Maybe even look into travel social work positions because most of those are in a hospital setting and then once you have the experience you will be able to have more options!

@AuJunaeAntoinette
@AuJunaeAntoinette 2 года назад
Thanks Elexis ! I am typically called a Hospital SW - Out patient. I have a very unique job as I work with inpatient patients about (45%) of the time and the rest are out patient OB Clinics(s) until they deliver (the 45%). I think if you can get a job at a clinic and or hospital type setting you will be golden! I have several videos showing my day to day and also going more in-depth. I kinda work whatever I want. I for sure work Monday, Wednesday 8 hrs, and Fridays 4 and T/Th I work whatever I feel is needed or necessary. I don’t work weekends and most of the hospital social workers don’t ( they have prn) some of my hospital sw work friends do work at other hospitals and work weekends or on call! Pay just ranges on what you are available and willing to do. Also of course your level of experience and education and most importantly your city. So we range from 27-40 per hour.

I am a teacher and I am looking into switching career paths into social work. I currently hold a BA in English and am wondering if I should get my BSW or MA in Social Work. What do you recommend? I currently work as a teacher just to give you some background. How is the pay? Thanks.
@AuJunaeAntoinette
@AuJunaeAntoinette 2 года назад
I think the best and more convenient option is to apply to a MSW program! I have a video on some tips and suggestions are far as picking a school. Pay is good, working in the hospital has competitive rates which is nice, also often times you can pick up additional shifts, work prn, and opportunities for raises and increases. So look more into it in your state and try and connect with a sw in that area. So my best advice would be looking into MSW and you don’t need to have a BSW in order to obtain it.. if you want you can even pursue getting your LMSW and LCSW which increases your opportunity for some even better money. Hope that’s helpful!

Hi I’m actually in between teaching or social work as a career. Any reason why your leaving teaching? It seems like social workers deal with more burn out than teachers but social work then seems more versatile 🤔
@AuJunaeAntoinette
@AuJunaeAntoinette 2 года назад
@@tocaraindrop hey, so I just wanted to add that my mom and several of my friends are teachers and they experience just as much stress as SW. just depends on the environment, the type of person you are, work load, etc.. I think it just depends on the type of work you are passionate about and if you want to merge the two professions together I would suggest school counseling( you can potentially maintain the social work path LCSW or get your LPC) and or school social worker. You get a mix of the two!

@AuJunaeAntoinette 2 года назад
Most of the hospital SW jobs I’ve researched do require you to have a MSW at the minimum. But I would suggest possibly doing some research on what type of focus/population/unit you would want to work on/with and getting some experience in that area with work experience and or trainings/certifications. But mainly go for it! Apply and interview and see what they need and what you an offer!
