I am a Social Worker Resident in Argentina, starting my career in the health system. I'm also rotating in the same unit as you. You probably will not see this, but finding such a close and relatable experience on the other side of the world is both fascinating and relieving at the same time.
Definitely see it! 😀 Hello from USA! So happy to know my content is reaching people in Argentina! Also hello, and congratulations on being a resident! In America basically means your are nearly done, is that an acceptable guess? Thanks for watching!
I am Social Worker in Brazil and I love your Channel . This month I started my first job as a social worker and it was in the health system. I'm learning English and learning about our profession around the world 🌎❣️
That’s beautiful and amazing to hear! We need so many bilingual social workers, you are definitely on an amazing track! So happy for you, congratulations! Thank you for your support!
Great video, I found it very informative. I plan on being a medical social worker for the VA hospital where I live. Thank you for sharing your pro's on being a Medical Social Worker.
Thank you! Glad you found it useful! Good luck to you on the next step in your career! If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask , maybe someone else can provide insight as well!
I am from the island of Saipan 🇲🇵 and is currently a student at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (online) for my BSW. Currently on my last semester and is doing my practicum at the local hospital here (in Saipan). It is exciting to watch your video because I am familiar with a lot of the things that you mentioned. I am working in the OB/NICU/Peds area but have recently gotten my feet wet with providing services for Med/Surg patients. I have been struggling with a focus in my career but so far, being a social worker at the hospital is very interesting and is what I may be leaning towards. Thank you for your content! :)
You’re so welcome!! Congratulations on all that you’ve accomplished! You’ve done so much and experienced so much in such a little time! So that’s amazing! Can’t wait to have you officially in the field! Thanks for watching the content! I really appreciate it ❤️ So now I’m going to be looking for your beautiful island!
Hi! Thank you so much for this content. I am a MSW student. Since I graduated from Undergrad in 2014, I have worked in child welfare. Can you do a video provided tips on how to get a medical practicum placement? And how to transition into medical social work? Thank you 💕
Hey girl! Lacy thank you for watching I appreciate it! I did do a video on how I got my medical SW job! Check it out in my videos, if you have more questions leave a comment under that one and I can explain further in another video. I can work on a video about placement and the transition from student to worker! 😊 thanks for the suggestion !!
I work in home health and love picking social workers brains on the topic of discharging patients. I know y’all’s day is crazy most of the time but What’s the best way you think home health agencies approach you? I personally feel as if it should be a partnership but I just love hearing different opinions
Hello! Well for me personally working on the Maternal Fetal Unit I don’t usually deal with a lot of home health care or agencies! Are you referring to home services that help patients once discharged? More outpatient ?
I’m currently in my first year of my MSW program. I’m curious if your field placements were in medical settings? I’m trying to strategize on how to get my foot into a medical social setting!
I did my MSW practicum at a healthcare clinic with a focus on Substance use and the MAT program ! I did my BSW at Inpatient home for women who have SUD. The job I interviewed for (my current job) it was working for the hospital on the Maternity unit and their specialty program OB office working with pregnant women (for prenatal care) who want MAT. So it was basically made for me lol 😂 But I have been telling ppl to check out travel social work ! It is a great experience to test the waters and get hospital exposure! Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions !
My graduation is tomorrow graduating with my Bachelor of behavioral science I’m really lost now need/ looking for Guidance I really want to do social work really ready to get started in my career field
First off congratulations on your accomplishments! I hope you do celebrate your hard work! I think that because SW is such an open field, it’s important to do some self reflection on what you enjoy, what field or population you can see yourself working with. I say if you want to continue on a journey with social work to get your MSW at least. It’s the best decision I’ve made as I have both my degree and first license with SW. you’ll learn so much about yourself and the profession and the opportunities will be there with exposure to some areas! If you have questions let me know, happy to help!
Ruby Congratulations!!! It’s normal to be scared!! But regardless, give yourself grace! Have patience with yourself and know you can’t and won’t remember it ALL! Find good support and leadership in the department to assist you when needed. Know you will need time to adjust and learn and be honest with yourself and staff! You got this, they saw the potential because they hired you, so lean on that and your education and exposure to the field!
I love this I want to get into this when I graduate in the spring and move to a different area. How did you find your job ? Like what did you search. Did you go through a website or went through the hospital
I was actually referred to the job by an LCSW I was working under during grad school. She contacted her friend who is my coworker who fwd me to her boss. But the application was online. Sometimes when you look online it would tell you what unit or floor while some hospitals wont tell you until the interview or inquired. I say apply and inquire if it’s interesting to you proceed because it might be easier to transition into labor and delivery once you have experience on another floor. But just look up medical or hospital social workers or even clinics !
Hey, so I’m sure some programs have more medical care/ focus wi the some courses built into the MSW curriculum. You will just need to make sure you apply to an accredited MSW program. Talk with someone about your practicum or field experience being in the medical field once you get to that point.
Okay I have a few questions lol.… So do you need to have a MSW or is a BSW ok? And it’s just a Masters degree in Social Worker right? And nothing medical related ?
Ohh no problem Jayla! Most positions I’ve seen myself (and my other friends in the medical field) just have a minimum requirement of a MSW. I got my MSW with a specialty in Clinical work. But you path doesn’t have to be similar to mine to get a medical/hospital SW position! You might be able to find some case manager job in the hospital with a bsw but most I’ve seen you’ll need a MSW. I also wanted to add: I completed my practicum in healthcare which definitely gave me a leg up but don’t be discouraged about that!
I’m not 100% sure I’m understanding your question. I’ve worked in the medial field as a social worker for a little over 3 years now. I am sharing my personal experiences, observations, and opinions. I think you just need to have experience and actually be in the profession to give advice . Hopefully that answers your question! 😊
@@AuJunaeAntoinette I’m sorry I meant while in the profession, do you have to be good at giving great advice to patients? I read online that you have to be able to give emotional support, provide interventions, etc
@@kianarosario5723 haha no worries! Mhmm, so one of the most important thing is to validate right! Like to really utilize those active listening skills, recall, and summarizing skills! What you learn as some of the key principles of our profession and encounters with patients. So a lot of the time, patients don’t need or ask for advice. They will normally tell you what they need, what they are dealing with, and how you can best help. So it’s about being a good listener, figure out what is most important thing to start with or assist with, and then acting on what needs to be done. So while you will give suggestions and advice , it’s also important to just be there for your patients and acknowledge what’s going on in their life. That is often more important for them, is to be heard especially in a medical setting because sometimes they don’t feel respected, heard, or attended to by medical professionals. Motivational interviewing can be utilized, emotional support, certain interventions can be incorporated in your skills and encounter with the patient but at the end of the day, you have to assess and address where the patient is, what will make sense to them, making sure they can comprehend what you’re telling them so they can be successful eventually without you and can be self sufficient and successful! Sometimes what you think was a good encounter might not have been the same perception the patient had, or vice versa. What might work for another night not work for them or you. So just have some confidence and really tap into those SW foundational skills! Not everyone will be satisfied but if you give an honest try and really tried to assist that’s what you have to reflect on. Does that help a little?
@@AuJunaeAntoinette yes that helped a lot!! Thank you so much! It’s nice hearing from someone actually working in the field. I am very indecisive and just been trying to figure out if the job will suit me based off of my personality
@@kianarosario5723 my pleasure. The beautiful thing about life and honesty the flexibility of our profession is that you don’t have to feel stuck or limited to one field or focus. You can try medical or hospital SW and if it’s not the right unit or floor you can see other opportunities and or completely change it up! Best of luck to you!
No I am not required to wear scrubs. It’s more casual wear, I just don’t wear jeans. You can dress up, you can be business casual, or you can purchase the scuba assigned to the unit/floor for SW’s.
