Bummer. I walked into an AD 2 years ago, super excited to buy my first Rolex. Took me until age 52 to finally be in a position to buy one. My heart sank when I learned I needed to get on a list. So, I gave my money to Omega, Hamilton, Casio (God Tier) +++ If I do buy the Submariner I’ve wanted since I was a Second Lieutenant in 1993, it will be from a U.S. military exchange … where at least I won’t have to pay sales tax and the Rolex will be in almost new condition. It’s great to see the market is tanking. At the end of the day, none of us “need” an expensive watch.

Very agreed. Rolex purposely creates the hype and shortage, I don't see it prestige honestly. The pre-owned market is insane, a two-decade older Rolex costs more than a brand new one, not making sense. I used the money on other brands instead and I'm thrilled by my decision.

Everyone, give your AD's a chance. I live in Tulsa and the AD here on 15th Street is FANTASTIC. My first visit was exactly two weeks prior to receiving my Sub LV. On my first visit I registered my 3 models of interest (Sub LV was #2). Two weeks later, I went in to ask if they could fix a broken ring mount (my second visit), and the AD said he had something to show me. 2 hours later I was wearing the Sub LV. What I did: Be sincere. Show interest in the store. Be honest. Let them know you will be giving them your business in other areas. Know exactly what models you want and why. Dress respectfully. Wear a Rolex.

I've been into ADs all over the world. There's probably 1 that would meet my personal level of customer care if I were in charge of running the place. Yes, there's huge lists, and they need to allocate pieces to the customers who have invested more time and money into getting them. However, they need to at least go through the charade of taking every customer seriously. Don't dismiss the attempt to purchase something. Take every name down. At least put them on some sort of list. Most people complain about feeling dismissed and that's down to poor people skills. Thankfully, two of my best friends are so-called Rolex VIPs, so I've never had to buy pieces I don't like. They got me the models I wanted without having to waste time.

“My money is as good as anybody else’s money” That’s not quite true though is it? Their customers that have been coming back regularly for 3, 5 or 10 years to their store buying watches, jewelry etc are obviously more valuable as customers than a new prospective client. This is business fundamentals 101. As a business owner you will obviously reward your regulars and treat them better than someone you might never see again after you give them what they want. Any business owner would do the same thing, whether it’s a restaurant owner that lets their regular get the table they want and skip the wait time or every other business in between. Understanding how the world works will save people from headaches and confusion moving forward.
@Watchmansam482

So you’re saying a corner shop would turn me down from buying a pint of milk if I hadn’t already spent a load of money there first. Of a carpenter won’t do a job for be if it’s my first time asking for a job. Or a car dealer won’t sell me a car unless I’ve bought 10?
@aleks9014
@aleks9014 Год назад
@@Watchmansam482 The thing is, these stores don’t only sell Rolex. They sell jewelry, diamonds, less desirable watches etc. They need to move their inventory one way or another. Why would they give a random person that does not support their business regularly, a desirable item vs the person that repeatedly comes back to buy various things? This is common sense. Since you wanted to bring up examples that will fall flat on their face, I’ll address some. If you want to look at car dealerships we will. You walk into a Mercedes dealership with no prior relationship or history, you’re not going to be able to order and spec an AMG GT black series or G63 without a waiting period/mark up. You can, however, buy a less desirable car without any issues. They will reserve those high end models to their loyal customers that have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars at their dealership. We can also look at contractors, yes they will still sell you their service. However, if you’re a first time client for them… you won’t be at the front of their calendar nor get the best price per sqft as their clients who repeatedly give them work or higher them for a bigger job. This is business 101. You spend more money, you will get preferential treatment. The entitlement in the watch community that every individual should be treated the same regardless of what relationship they have with an authorized dealer is kind of ridiculous. For better or for worse this is how business and the world works and always has been. I guess you can argue this is a relatively new reality for the watch world, which is pretty true, but the massive transfer of wealth and rise of young entrepreneur have driven so much more attention and buyers towards watches that did not exist prior.
@KeepingWatchUK
@KeepingWatchUK Год назад
@@Watchmansam482Aleks is spot on. You can’t compare buying a pint of milk to buying a luxury watch worth thousands which you could potentially then sell the day after for a few more thousands! Re your car comment, yes, try buying a Porsche GT model or a Ferrari as a first time buyer…! This Rolex thing isn’t difficult. If you’re a watch lover you’ll likely buy something else anyway, a Tudor or Speedy perhaps. You’ll then be more likely to get a Rolex thereafter. Or else just be patient. I totally agree with the sentiment. It’s not ideal Rolex works in this way. But the truth is, especially given recent price hikes, JLC pieces tank in value as soon as you leave the store. Whilst watch lovers, me included, appreciate JLC, most won’t. A Rolex on the other hand is known world wide, and as soon as you leave the store you’ll have either not lost a penny else moreover likely made £ in equity. So there’s no surprise why it’s easier to buy a JLC than a Rolex! Fact. Ps. Love the ultra thin Moonphase in particular btw.

So, you didn't get a watch. Great story. Here's a story: I went on Amazon and bought a Steeldive Sub. No interview, no probing, no waiting list, and I have a watch on my arm. I guess I win.

Hey man, as long as your happy. I would say it's not comparable at all though. At the end of the day you're wearing a $150 homage while this man is trying to get the real thing. Both have their places but hardly comparable situations. I personally wouldn't call your situation a "win" but to each their own.

It's all artificial hype, I've had 2 x Rolex out of an AD in NW England and both times it was a completely normal interaction and I had a watch on my wrist in about 2 weeks. That said I got rid of my Explorer about a month ago and now I'm sporting a Grand Seiko Elegance and it's a much better watch in many respects. Believe the hype if you want (just like I did) but eventually you'll see through it all.

"If I want to purchase a Rolex sports model, my money should be as good as anyone else." Bingo. I've never flipped a watch in my life, but in the end, salesman should not have to care what you do with the watch after you purchase it. You bought it, it's yours, flip it if you want. You're the person who owns it, not them. I understand that they want to sell to people who will actually wear it, but again, this just loops back around to Rolex. It's their fault for limiting supply to make their brand seem more exclusive.

This a wind up? Bloody hell. It's s shop. You go into shops to buy things usually served be staff on minimum rate wages. They're sales staff trying to sell pieces of steel and gold.I think you should be more worried about what you think of them, rather them you. Far too much thought going on here. You're overthinking the process and with that causing anxiety. Do yourself a favour and man up.

I've watched a lot of Rolex videos and this is the first that covered what they ask you as opposed to 10 things not to do when buying your first Rolex. So thanks for this video! I'm a retired nobody. I don't socialize or care to so I may network with friends who are big-shots! Well actually only know one person who is a big-shot!

I’m embarrassed watching this process. For the average person, the odds of getting the EXACT watch you want at MSRP, is highly unlikely. Plus, you’ll have to spend money on other items (you probably don’t want), kiss a$$ to a sales person who is nothing more than a poser with little actual relevance to society; and then wait many months, if not years to get said watch. Listen, If you can afford a Rolex, go ‘grey’ and spend the premium money. You pay more, but get want you want quickly; plus, hold onto your dignity!

80% of sales come from 20% of you’re clients, also you aren’t entitled to anything….it’s a private business why do you feel like you’re entitled to anything? I agree that anyone should be able to buy the watch but back when I was in sales (selling machine guns) when I had access to a unique or very sought after item I’d call my hood clients that have spent with me over the years because they are just that, good clients that I have a long relationship with. Why the hell would I offer it to some random person that will probably never come back?
