I have been working as a Financial Analyst for many years now. But, when I was a student I had no clue about what it meant to work as a financial analyst or whether it was the right career choice for me.
So I wanted to create this video, giving you a full flavour on the Investment Industry and a typical day in life of a Financial Analyst.
This is what you will hear about:
► What is the Investment Industry: sell vs buy side
► Who are Financial Analysts
► Can You Become a Financial Analyst? Skills & qualifications like CFA
► What Does a Financial Analyst Do
► Financial Analyst Salary
► Diversity and Work-Life balance in the investment industry
► Is the investment industry right for you
► How expensive is it to work in the city (Travel & Food cost)
► Working from home in the lockdown
► How Equity Research Analyst analyse a company
► Risk Management in the Investment Industry

I have went through so many clips of how people introduce their job and where they are working at, I would say this is one of the most realistic. How many do we see people yawn in their clips? Every job has its prime and boring moment, and I would say this lady kept it real.

@TheSubtleInvestor

Hi Ben Thanks. Work life balance does depend on role type & company culture. The closer you are to directly deciding on 'money decision' - more stressful it will be. Generally working in research should have better balance than becoming a Fund Manager.

This job seems so fun :) I unfortunately started my IT degree after I found out I really enjoy value investing (finding the intrinsic value of a company using DCF and other metrics PE, PS, Payout ratio, PB, ext..). Now im trying to figure out where I could fit in the Finance sector, this job seems so exciting :) I also loved the video, stay strong and good luck in your career.
@TheSubtleInvestor

Thank you Jairus. Having an IT background is definitely useful-if its in the software side its extra handy. The trend in finance is all about how to find meaningful data to make investment decisions. You can either go down the ‘quant’ route or work in IT related team in a finance company (then move internally) - i do wish you all the best!

@gusharper7210
@gusharper7210 3 года назад
is there much presenting etc? And how big would the audience be? have you got any advice to someone who suffers from social anxiety?
@TheSubtleInvestor
@TheSubtleInvestor 3 года назад
hi Gus, to certain degree there will be presenting. This is because you will have to present analysis to a group of fund managers/other analysts on a reoccurring basis. The audience can vary, but if you feel uncomfortable talking to big group im sure your manager/company will understand. everyone is different and now there are alot of support/understanding for people. All i will say is once you start working you begin to build a good working relation with your colleagues you'll automatically feel comfortable. I also dont do well talking front of large audience. but what really helps is to really prepare ahead of a meeting and think of possible questions that may come your way. what i found is that by building a close one to one working relationship with other colleagues helps me talk about my ideas to them.

Hey...a switch would be much easier since you're already in the industry. @TheSubtleInvestor
@TheSubtleInvestor 3 года назад
hi Mantas, To start as a financial analyst I'd sat ACA or CFA. After landing your job your hiring company should naturally pay towards IMC. My company paid for my CFA exams. If you don't have finance related degree and need to restart from an entry level then you can look at apprenticeships level. Or it might be easier to first enter a company in different roles (which doesnt require criteria of financial analyst) and then move internally. All the best :)

Hello If you are genuinely interested in working in finance then dont worry about burn outs because not all roles are stressful. Im not sure about working culture in India, but you should be able to work in areas where its not too stressful (i.e.those that are not front office roles).

Hello! I did my bcom finance in India.And I am planning to do msc International finance at Chester University in Uk.How is the scope of job opportunities in Uk after my masters.Is it a difficult field to get job.Should I want to do CFA after masters?
@TheSubtleInvestor
@TheSubtleInvestor 2 года назад
Hi Once you study here it should’nt be too difficult although its a competitive market. Try to apply for internships during your masters and attend job fairs. Alot of successful people get job before graduation! Your employer should pay for your CFA - no need to do it before. Either way you need at least 4 years relevant work experience to use the CFA designation

Hi - yes sometimes different valuation model are used based on the company being analysed. People tend to look at third party/sell side research who applies various models and then compare

@TheSubtleInvestor
@TheSubtleInvestor 3 года назад
i'd think first start a graduate job in a finance company and then get your company to pay towards CFA (study while working) and you should be done in 3 years plus get the required work experience. You cannot use the CFA designation without 4 years of work experience anyway :)
