Good to see a whole day again - especially featuring the comedy double act that is Kleeman & Simon 🤣 To echo your thoughts at the end of the video, I have been self employed the majority of my life and wouldn't have it any other way - but for anyone who thinks it is "easier" than being employed, they need to experience more than just a "day in the life". I am lucky to have the support of my wife who works full time in our business and some great part time employees - without them we would not have the business we do today and in honesty I think employment would be the far easier option. 👍

Captain only got stuck due to Mike getting him to back up too far into the field!!!!! (Let's not mention the lowboy repair though lol !!!!!!!!!!!!!) Maybe that is 1 goal each ---- a draw!!! lol Interesting to hear your thoughts Mike on being a self employed businessman. As you say many people think it is a great life with rich rewards, but I know how hard business folk have to work and the long hours that come with the job. For my sins I had a number of contractors as customers when I worked in finance - some very good, some not so much but they all worked extremely long hard hours. Good luck to you, your family and the team behind you. Cheers

Mikey... all creatures seek out comfortable environments within which they can exist. Those that find habitats that are compatible with most of their needs tend to be more successful than those who don’t. Of those whose biome is harmonious... the creatures that work continuously to optimize their habitat are the ones that thrive. The creature known as Dirt Perfect is fortunate to have found the Derby environment. And, through hard work has fashioned his habitat to satisfy his needs and promote the betterment of the community. An environmental impact statement on this might read: Derby = Good Habitat Derby + DP= Thriving Environment Please pardon me for waxing philosophical... but, I just thought you should know that people notice... and at least one appreciates the works you do.

Back when my sons were home, once in a while they would do something(let's call it) no so intelligent and something got bent or broken. My job was supervisor, their job was to use the tools in the manner that I told them and fixed their own not so intelligent damage. Seems like the Captain needs supervision, not just do it for him because he acts like he can't do it.

I sold my 05 z71 a couple months back with 180k miles. For a 1500, it was one tough truck. Also backwards on things. When hauling all my temps fell. The heavier the better on temps on the trans, and coolant. Pulled 13,000lbs on that truck without issue. Also, my plugs never wanted to stay tight so the truck typically ran low compression by accident. Never threw a code when i took the plug out while it was running! Great truck, but the suspension was worn and needing replacement bushings everywhere. No rust as Texas truck Don't get these new trucks as they suck. My 2017 3500 ram had the ABS module quit at 103k miles. No cruise for me anymore. Also, extremely easy to dent and scrap compared to those old trucks

It has several dents and dings and a few rusty spots but it is my go to vehicle when I need a 4x4. I will drive it until it falls apart. One thing I see in comments I see as an ongoing misunderstanding is Captains (mishaps). He by relevant terms is a newer operator. He now operates mostly on his own as you give him more and more responsibilities. The broken mirrors and other items, new rake, and the trailer sometimes these things present themselves slowly and an experienced operator gets a feeling of when the machine is not working for him but against him. Yes a broken mirror is clearly the fault of the operator that broke it. However what else was going on. Was the machine in a confined area did a tree limb bounce up or out that he didn’t expect. The amount of times I broke the lower window of an excavator from either a branch that broke weird or a rick that shot off the hammer weird while breaking a rock or concrete is well over a number of years many. Less than a dozen but more than one hand I’m sure. I have hung hard lines on skid steers on tree limbs while moving or loading other materials I had a cattle gate shift last year on my loader with forks on it and took out the self leveling rod. I couldn’t have hit thing just right to do that if I had been trying to. Things happen like DP said the trailer been talking to them for awhile showing her tail to then and wanting attention and repair. DP having run it for along time now probably has a pretty good idea when it miss behaves what gentle encouragement would be needed to talk the machine into just one or two more rounds. A newer operator or someone with a slightly different temperament not so much. It’s easy to set back and poke fun ( not saying we shouldn’t that’s part of the game. You break it then you get poked on) but we need to remember how much crap did we break ( or still break) as we learned and got those skills refined. I off top of my head can say in my life done a fair amount my self I split a D300 CAT in half with only two rocks in the bed (they weighed 30 tons but two rocks) three a track off a PC200 put it back on after 2 hours and threw it back off in 20 feet ( front idler was worn out and bearings gone was trying to load it on trailer ) I literally walked it 600 feet dragging the track and loaded it without it just to get back to shop to fix it. Things happen sometimes we all need to remember it and remember the new guys are going to tear crap up as they learn to be on their own and run their own jobs. It’s your job to lead them from the big failures like engines and hydros. Ripping transmissions and rear ends out of lowboys from getting stuck for example. I think DP is doing an outstanding job teaching these things and all of his workers have done a good job receiving the information

Mike, I totally know where you are coming from. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes that people do not take into consideration when we shoot them a price. I was self employed for years but with my line of work insurance companies ran the price down. My dad did custom hay work some were good others tried to run the price down that it wasn’t worth the hassle. I’m new to your channel dirt work “farming” is in my blood. Unfortunately the family farm is being pushed out by a growing city. I now design Cat yellow equipment so your comments of what you like and dislike in a machine matters to me. I don't know if you guys living in the rural north will understand this or not. The fire watch you talked about reminded me of a little story. Did you know the wise men who came to the site of Jesus birth had ashes on their feet? The Bible says they came from a far. In the rural south older people called a fire a far. Don't know if that applies to your area but here it is a funny story. The people at the last supper also came in a Honda. The Bible says they were all in one accord.

you are so right, we can hire people to do the work but no one wants to do the details and the work that dont pay. when is the last time you spent 10 hours on an estimate. or as a GC sometimes i spend weeks on an estimate that the clients just go through and berate my work saying I should work harder to save them money. there is a point after the bid where the clients just come back and nit pick a subcontractors estimate and want us to spend 10 hours trying to get them a savings to them and for us to do all the redesign for them to capture that savings. the reason the work is the easiest part is because that is the only thing that pays. admin , phone calls, estimates, insurance payments and negotiations and running a business does not pay in a service business. no matter what the price is , there is just 60% or more that you can do it cheaper.
