I remember liking Beth the most out of the March sisters when I was a kid. I adored her for her quiet wisdom and her selfless caring for other people, and was very much drawn to that. I read the translated edition for children then, and did not release that it only had the first half. I was very much saddened by what happened to her when I read the full version later in life, but I still like her a lot.

I do agree with you all about Beth. The more I read the book the more loved she became by me. It was her quiet love and how the little everyday things are often the most important. I still can't get past the fim version when Hannah holds her dolls hands after she died. Hannah knew too.

Here's the content this Alcott scholar has been waiting for! I mentioned before that I used to take my MA thesis edits to Bronson's bench in the morning before the museum opened, because if you can work on your Alcott-based thesis at Orchard House, you totally do that! I love the stories about how Concord neighbors back in the Alcotts' time used to keep an eye out to see if Bronson was on his bench eating apples, because they knew then to take the long way home, up behind the house and through the woods, so they wouldn't get roped into conversation with him. For some reason, I've always found this deeply relatable.

Thanks for speaking more slowly when reading to us this time, Ruby. It makes it so much easier to hear what you're saying. Much appreciated. ❤️ BTW, the Russet apple is actually an English apple. If you haven't managed to taste one in America you can find them in some greengrocers shops here in the UK. Or you could buy a tree from a garden centre although you'd have to wait a year or so for it to fruit. Not quite the same ambience to enjoy it in perhaps, but they are very tasty apples. 😋 👍 You must have made some lovely memories whilst travelling, maybe some little moments to add to your own writing one day? Looking forward to seeing more of your vlogs. X❤️X

If you want to be saved believe that Jesus is who he says he is, that he died for all of our sins, was buried, and on the third day rose from the dead. Whosoever shall believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For we are saved by grace through faith and that not of ourselves, it is the gift of God, not of work's, lest any man should boast. Have a blessed night everyone, I love you all, and stay safe!

hi ruby! since you love little women so much, i thought you might as well enjoy a children’s series called ‘the penderwicks’ by jeanne birdsall. it’s kind of like a modern interpretation of little women and it holds a very dear place in my heart as someone who enjoyed little women a lot as well. i do have to say though that i only know the german version, and the english original might differ a little, but i am sure it’s still great!
@ClueFinderDirtDigger
@ClueFinderDirtDigger Год назад
I was so delighted to see this comment! I grew up reading the Penderwicks in English, devouring the first book shortly after its publication during my middle school 5th grade year, and continuing to grow with the Penderwick sisters up through the final book’s publication during my third year at university. The author, Jeanne Birdsall, is a Massachusetts resident and was undoubtedly influenced by Little Women, yet somehow managed to make her characters complete masterpieces of literature in their own right. Although the books are set in the modern day, the tone, settings, and even the dialogue feels truly timeless. I can’t recommend this series highly enough - for all ages! ❤️

@tabitha4329
@tabitha4329 Год назад
There’s no need to “correct” Ruby’s pronunciation. She’s speaking in English, and pronouncing all of her words in her RP accent. English borrows a number of words from different languages so she can pronounce it according to her understanding of English. If it were French, it would be a different matter. Given the range of accents in the UK alone, the pronunciation of words is malleable to each individual speaker. ✨

@theavodkado
@theavodkado Год назад
@@tabitha4329 You’re conflating pronunciation and accent. Yes, we all have slightly different accents, but that doesn’t mean we can go around mispronouncing words because then no one would be able to understand anyone. The word ‘cliché’ is also French but if you went around pronouncing it like ‘clitch’ not only would you risk not being understood, but also embarrassing yourself. Besides, Ruby likes learning so I really don’t see any issue ? It was a totally constructive comment. She literally said thank you for the correction.

Both Louisa May Alcott and her mother Abigail May Alcott lived fascinating and unusual lives for 19th-century women. I'd recommend reading about them if you're interested. Abba Alcott was also a fine writer herself, so if you can find her diaries or letters, you'll find she had a bold voice and a sharp sense of humor. No wonder Marmee March is immortal.

For christmas this year, I've bought my 3 nieces classics I enjoyed when I was young (and still do). For the 10 yr old I bought Little Women, for the 8 yr old I bought The Secret Garden, and for the 5 yr old I bought Heidi. I bought the Puffin in Bloom edition of Little Women and it's huge - 700+ pages. I checked the chapter list in the copy I have, and saw that my copy is only part 1, whereas the one I got for my niece is 2 parts. How did I not know there was a whole second part? Maybe I never even read part 2. Anyway I hope the 700+ pages tome is not too intimidating for my little love.
@DS-uh6ss

Good Wives, the second part, is usually just published with the first, together, as Little Women, but yes, it gets tricky, especially with publications for younger readers, making sure you have the complete OG text. The Secret Garden was my favorite.

@RubyGranger8
@RubyGranger8 Год назад
Oh that's so funny! I do agree that she can sometimes come across as such, but I think the characters in the books need to be seen over the course of both novels because it's their progression as much as their original character which is so wonderful :) who is your favourite March sister out of interest?
@vt1527
@vt1527 Год назад
@@RubyGranger8 Yes of course the characters need to be seen in their progression and I do actually like Jo a bit better in the end of both the movie and the book :) Though as I said: I think I just don´t resonate with her and this is where my dislike of her stems from. "Controversially" enough my favourite of the sisters is Amy ;) Not that I condone everything she does (especially in the beginning, albeit her being a prepubescent child then), but I can in many parts see myself in her and thus can kind of understand why she does the things she does and why she wants the things she wants - but that´s the beauty of Little Women I suppose: the March sisters and other characters in general are so different in their personalities that there´s a character for everyone to resonate with! :D

I wasn’t aware of all the hardship Alcott endured, and as a writer, I find her life to be extremely inspiring. Now I have her picture over my writing desk, and I often think of channeling my “inner Louisa.” There is also a fascinating companion documentary to the book that I think is on Amazon Prime video.

My favourite film is the 1994 one though, it’s definitely my comfort one. I don’t think I can express how much I dislike the 2019 one, the outfits are atrocious (I think my main problem is that I’m a massive lover of that era and so the costumes annoy me so much) and I found it to be a bit rushed, also I dislike films that jump back and forth between the past and future especially when it doesn’t make sense to or it doesn’t tell you when it does.

Oh, I could just cry! I paused the video and went to look for my copy and it was not anywhere on my shelves. I think ... I may have sold it to the bookstore when I was desperate for money a while back. ARGH! I do have it on Kindle. At least there's that. If I can afford it, I think my birthday present to myself in a few months will be a new, hardcover version. Or those fake leather ones. Not anything too large, it has to be small enough to take with me in a bag. But this is a book I will reread the rest of my life. It's such a comfort read!

Ruby, not sure if you're a fan of William Faulkner, but Rowan Oak in Oxford Mississippi was his home before his daughter sold it to Ole Miss. You should check it out.

I love this! I have always had an attachment to this character! I would love to see other literary figures! Elizabeth Bennett, Anne Shirley, Hermione, Nancy Drew!

? Does Ruby always slip on her shoes without doing the laces, haha because if so I do the same thing.

I usually do! I know it’s a bad habit haha but it’s so much easier 😂 glad I’m not the only one!

@@RubyGranger8 Yep it's definitely a time saver and for sure way easier. I even go a shoe size up so that I can slip on my shoes 👞. We may just have started a craze for time management and productivity for foot wear use 😅.

I visited Concord a few years ago now. I am a huge fan of Little Women, and Lousia May Alcott's life in general. I loved orchard house of course, but the most emotional part for me, was seeing Louisa and her family's graves. Since I was a little kid, I felt a connection to Louisa's spirit. I was a huge tomboy, Though I have one sister, growing up she was a teen and was out doing her thing, so I see more of my best friends as my sisters. I do love to write, as well as act, I belong to an improv troupe. I Think why so many like jo, is because, not only she speaks her mind and is the tough sister, but she also has little aspects of all of us, I think. great video btw!!! and I can't wait to see more adventures! Lousia would be so proud. 💗💗

When I am doing focused work I put on headphones with music. Thanks to my autism and adhd I hyper focus on what I’m doing. So that’s really helpful too
