My day as a Kitchen Porter at Goldman Sachs, 8 hours shift.
I give a breakdown of a day in the life of a Kitchen Porter.
Performing the tasks no one else wants to do - cleaning nasty messes,
scraping remnants of people’s meals into growing garbage, ensuring chefs
have what they need to turn ordinary food into extraordinary meals.
One has to wonder: "who are these restaurants industry underdogs, who choose
to clean up our mess? And what makes them tick?"
There's purpose in every season of life... you just have to look for it.

When I was a KP, I always appreciated the chefs who started as KPs. They always made me feel appreciated. For example, some of them always apologised when they brought pots and pans which were severely burnt. A simple "sorry", or "thank you" goes a long way.

Porter's are the soul of the kitchen. They keep it together for the cooks. I remember going off the line after a long rush and sending the porter on a nice lunch/dinner break and I covered for them, most of the time I stayed well after they returned to help clear everything, and I was the chef. I found it very relaxing.

I'm a chef at a tiny kitchen so we have to do all our own washing up, but watching all the stuff that goes on behind the scenes in huge kitchens like this is always mind blowing. Like everyone says in the comments, if you can handle the long work days and stress you'd probably make a great chef!

For me doesn't matter what position you are in. If you are a horrible person you will make a horrible workplace as well! Having people that know what they are doing is half of what the jobs are about. Having people at work that have fun, support each other, and are just great people is far more important then anything else! Then I think with experience you understand when to work hard and when to chill. Sometimes places take advantages of your skills and decide to not hire another person cause you are enough for the job... which most of the time is not the case, especially in the hospitality sector, which will end up affecting your mental and physical health. Advice KP people please. My routine is place plates, cups, saucers into sink and hand wash a little first, then into rack and into dishwasher. All comes out clean no problem. Don't even get delayed after closing time so not like getting delayed in going home. My boss Emma has recently these last couple of months bearing in my mind never had a problem with the way i did it before does it like this - puts plates, cups or sauces straight onto rack, spray and into dishwasher. Problem is you can't rely on the dishwasher doing the job properly like many dishwashers so its coming out dirty. I have been putting it back dirty now either way i do it i will get screwed at. My kitchen team and foh staff agree with the way i do it. Handwash first. Any advice much appreciated cause either way im getting screwed

What I did learn in my 6 years of experience working with managers and people that are in a higher position than you are. They love to tell people what to do, cause most of the time they either getting shit from higher people then them or they just don't have much going on in their life apart the job they have! SO a good tip. Always say "YES", agree with what they tell you to do, and then just keep doing it your way. :)

Kitchen Porter usually do the basic preparation. Like pealing potatoes, cleaning certain type of sea food or vegetables. Mainly are the easiest and most annoying job that a chef won't do cause of the high quantity of time you have to spend behind those, and literally you get bored after 2 consecutive day of doing it. Look for a kitchen that make's you do something new everytime, I remember how fun it was to just to something different like frying things.

Yeah for sure! Most of my job I found them through the agency called www.coople.com/uk/ . There are many like this in London. So the more you have, the more chances you have to get a job. For the kitchen porter role, I would say the best thing you can do is having a 4 hours trial, show them how you work, and socialize with as many people as possible there, show them you are happy to work for them. Interviews for KP are not that difficult at all. Speaking English is already a huge plus. As many KP don't usually talk English, from my experience. I would recommend you to work on yourself meanwhile you have the KP job. You don't want to clean dishes for the rest of your life! Hope I helped you! If you have more question, I'm around :) .

Can you share your upper body workout routine? Your arms are incredible! I don't think the routine I'm doing is working hahaha
@Boccione07
@Boccione07 2 года назад
I'm a climber; so there is a loot of upper body work involved. Mainly is a lot of pull ups, but if you want to increase your muscle mass, which will affect your strength as well (In the good way). Do the 5x5, with 80 to 90% of your MR (Maximum Repetition). Once you are happy with the body mass and the size of your muscle, then you can start to add high repetition and calisthenics, to get shredded. But the main thing is the motivation, the consistency; that is at the end of the day what will bring result in the long term. Work for the health benefit, for the sake of staying mentally healthly. Wait for the body result, be patient, once you will see result you will be hyped up and no one else can stop you once you got those result kicking in! IMPORTANT: choose whatever motivation you want! I started working out to get more attractive on the eye of the girls. Now I do it for myself cause it feels good. What's your workout routine?

@@Boccione07 I'm 5'8, male, 24 years old, weigh 160 pounds, and am an ectomorph. I decided to embrace my frame as I can't eat massive amounts of food each day, it makes me sick. The heaviest weight I lift is 50 lbs dumbbells. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays I do chest and triceps, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I do biceps and back. For chest and triceps, I do dumbbell bench press, dips, and weighted push 5 x 12. For Biceps and back, I do weighted pull-ups, rows, and hammer curls about 5 x 12 as well. I also do shoulders every other day and I throw in weighted squats here and there. What do you think? Also, what size of shirts are you wearing now? I alternate between small and medium because sometimes the small is too tight and the medium is too big.
@Boccione07

@@guszuchini2471 I think that you make it difficult for yourself with this schedule. You have to rest a day after a gym session, it should look like Monday, OFF, Wednesday, OFF, Friday, OFF, Light Session. Light Session = Train muscle that you would never train: forearms, obliques, lots of stretch, fingers as well. Keep it simple, 4 main exercises: Bench Press - Deadlift - Pull Ups - Squats Chest + Triceps = Good. Bench Press. Cable Crossovers. Push Ups. Open Elbow Dips. Rope Push Down. Diamond Push Ups. Close elbow dips. Back + Biceps = Good. Deadlift. Barbell Bent Over Row. Pull Ups. Chin Ups. Concentration Curl. Barbell Curl. Incline Stretch Curl. Legs + Shoulder = Good. Squats. DB Reverse Lunge. Leg Press Lying Leg Curl. One calves exercise. Shoulder Press. Lateral Press. Hold Handstand for 10 sec. The shirts I'm using are M, I don't go S or it looks to tight and it just becomes uncomfortable.

Not to mention but prep woman has done something inappropriate to my work colleague and me and i still get bullied by the kid that has come back. Changing job was the best choice you made. I was in the same position as you, and honestly I made my last days of working there quite difficult for them. Since I was going anyway, I was having fun and messing with them as much as I could. Cause some people need their own medicine to realize how bad they are behaving. Hope the job you are right now is better and you can focus on what you are looking to do in life. Don't take shit by nobody, you don't own nothing to anyone.

most kitchens allow you to have a break, for example wagamamas if you do a morning shift whats normally 7am to 3pm your break is around 10.30am to 11am where you can get a meal cooked for you or cook your own and the breaks normally if you dont smoke are about 20 to 25 minutes long, however if your a kp it can be difficult squeezing in breaks during a evening shift so best advice is get there just a bit earlier by around 10 to 15 minutes if its not too busy get a chef or yourself to cook a meal then eat it then and have snacks during the shift it self
