Day In The Life Of Wheat Harvest On Our Montana Farm 2020 | Kate's Ag - Farm to Fashion
In this weeks video I talk about the process of farming. I show you the daily life of wheat harvest on our Montana farm. You will learn how a farm operation works. I speak about the moisture level of the wheat and why it is important to not put moist wheat in the grain bins. You will get to watch me dump in the grain cart on the go. I also take you along to check my grain tank to see how full it is. I am able to save a birds life by paying attention to my combine header. I explain the difference in the two kinds of wheat, winter wheat and spring wheat. I also explain why in Montana we plant different varieties of wheat. The two kinds of crops we primarily grow are wheat and barley. I discuss why farmers are so important and that not many people now how their food gets to their table. I talk about why it is so important to buy locally grown farm and ranch products as well as products made in the USA. I also let you know that I am developing a Kate's Ag - Farm to Fashion product that is coming out in the fall. You are able to see a swather swathing a wheat field. I also show you the size difference of a semi truck and a tandem truck (which is smaller). You will get to hear different people in our operation talk on the radio. I hope you enjoy my video of a day in the life of wheat harvest on our Montana farm.

My Story...
Hello. My name is Kate Stephens and I am a 16-year-old 4th generation farmer. My family has been farming wheat in north central Montana since my great grandfather immigrated from Denmark in 1912 and homesteaded our land. My family has been teaching me about farming since I was 2 years old. Until recently the wheat we grow has been taller than me. My grandfather is 93 and he is the best mentor ever. I run one of the combines on the farm at harvest. I believe that it is important for everyone to know where their food comes from and the families who produce it. I love our farm and I decided that the amazing photos I take at harvest of our wheat and barley could make fabulous, exciting designs for fashion and accessories. That is how Kate’s Ag - Farm to Fashion became a reality. I hope you love my handbag as much as I do because this is an extension of our farm and the grains we have been growing to feed other families for over one hundred years.

Just from listening to you and can tell that you were raised right. Thats what is wrong with the world today. I was raised on a farm in Louisiana with the closest town really small. I don't know the last time I heard a young woman or man say thank you, yes sir, yes ma'am. Great Channel and great to see.

I didn't grow up on a farm BUT we used to visit farm parks & some of the places we holidayed at used to keep chickens, bees AND a kitchen garden. Apart from the bees we were aloud to havest everything else

Nice to see a young person with passion for farming. Losing more and more farmers, farms and farmland to the city around here.

Thank you for your kind comment. I notice when I travel around the country that cities are expanding into farmland areas. This is very sad to me because I feel a deep connection with my heritage and I am passionate to tell the story of farmers. I want farmers to prosper.
@robbybachmann332

Makes me sad as well. There were about 60 dairy farms and 1000 people in our community in the 1950 s today there are 6 dairy’s farms and about 20000 people. Bare farmland sells for about 115000 $ an acre and most of the young people want the money not the work.....
@KatesAg
@KatesAg 4 года назад
The whole state of Montana has just a little over 1 million in population so we don’t see farm ground prices increase substantially by the city in the area we farm. Dry land acres run around $1,500 an acre and it takes a lot of acres to make a living off of your farm because the yields aren’t as high as other parts of the country.

Hey Kate! Greetings from Dawson County, Montana! I've just discovered youir channel and like what I saw and heard. You seem to take a different view on how things work on a farm and point out some things people might not be aware of. Stopping for a baby bird while you're in the heat of the harvest season is down-right inspirational. I used to have a wheat farm here in Dawson County and so I understand what you are saying. Thank you for enlightening everyone about where the ingredients come from for breads and pasta. Good luck with your harvest, take care and be safe Kate.

My sister who was born in the late 30s could do all of this. So, I do not agree with your comment that women were not allowed to this sort of work. My sister drove the combine and all other farm equipment. Us boys did not start doing the same work until we turned 9. Today, they keep kids as kids until they are 40 years old. That is the problem with our society today.

You are doing a good job explaining what your combine is doing. Your young viewers and some of the older ones are being shown that their bread does not ultimately come from the grocery store. Gov. Cumo of NY is being shown that there is a little more to it than dig a hole, throw in a seed and cover it up.
@KatesAg
@KatesAg 4 года назад
Thank you so much for your kind words. I agree it takes a lot of work to get the seed in the ground and then harvest it. There are all kinds of things that can happen in between like hail, not enough rain, bugs etcetera. It is quite a process to get the grain into bread.

I have been contemplating on jumping ship to the states for the simple reason the land spread is alot bigger than it is here. I do slot of combining , grain carting, excavator work etc.. but at present I've not had a big enough tempt from a prospective farm/s over there. Anyway, keep it up youngen Regards Krisie Kray aka Dr Fox

I recognize your enthousiasm for your farm as it is a great part of who and what you are. Amazing how easy you talk through a 45 min. vlog 🤣 Love your perspective on agriculture, very enlightening. Should be madatory for students to watch and learn that food (usually) does not grow in refridgerators and supermarkets. Just stumled upon your channel after viewing the Millennial Farm. Bobtail is what I call the three trucks. Semis are normally 18 wheelers. Depending on your laws in Montana you may have 3 axles on the trailer and possibility 3 drive axels on your tractor (semi Tractor). I am from Oklahoma so our bridge laws are a little different maybe. Great video's Kate, did you and your 9610 combine grow up togethers. That's why you work togethers so well. Hope to see your family farm soon. Keep up the good work.

Yes my 9610 and I grew up together. I absolutely love it. It has been a great combine for me. It always works. Even when the wheel falls off you can just give it more power and keep going to get the job done. 😂 I'll have to make a video about that. Thank you so much for the nice comment.

@@KatesAg I am living on my family`s grainfarm in South Africa. We also use swather to cut the wheat and barley before harvest for wind damage . I was wandering why you cut your grain ,if it also is for wind damage ?

Curious what area this is in. I grew up in Vaughn MT and my mom’s family were farmers in Gilford near Havre! So I spent lots of time there. (Crites was their sir name). I also love watching the Welkers In Shelby. Great video!

Kate's Ag - Farm to Fashion as a side note, my great-grandparents would have been homesteading land just northeast of Vaughn about the same time. Lots of homesteading going on in that era.... they eventually sold the farm years later (four Johnston brothers) but I always enjoy the history in these type stories! Tough people that is for sure!

I have never seen wheat cut down like that in rows before combining. Here, we combine in situ.
@KatesAg
@KatesAg 4 года назад
In our area we commonly get a fly called Saw fly. They cut through the wheat stem and lay eggs in it. When this happens the wheat no longer stands up anymore instead it lays down. This makes it really hard to strait cut the wheat because we would have to lay our combine headers on the ground and we would not be able to get all of the wheat. We try and swath the wheat before it falls down. When the wheat is swathed it is much easier to pick up with the combine because it is all together rather than laying down. Occasionally we are able to strait cut the wheat because we plant semi - solid stem wheat which is a variety of wheat with a stronger stem that doesn’t fall down as easy. Thank you so much for your comment. 💕
