When patients ask me what about telling them what’s going on, I just say, “oh, I don’t read these. I send them to the radiologist to read.” When they pry, like harrass me with trying to tell them the results, my response is, “i would tell you, but you don’t want me telling you what i think it is. I could be dead wrong and you end up getting the wrong treatment.” And their eyes get big as quarters and then they stop asking. 😂 but it’s true, I can’t diagnose anything because i’m not a doctor. I also explain that the ultrasound exam alone won’t give all the info for a full diagnosis, so their doctor(s) will have to tell them because of various tests they do to help with finding out a diagnosis.
This is GREAT advice!!! Haha yeah it’s definitely a learning process on how to respond to patients and their reactions without getting mad or saying the wrong thing. Good job!!!
@@lolgeselle Sometimes i switch it up and just say when they ask me what i see on the screen, “i seeeeeee.....organs 😁” and then they have a chuckle and move on to the next subject. 😂
I usually say "I see what I need to see", and if they are begging or repeatedly asking what I think it is, I will say "Sorry, but I don't have a license to diagnose. I may loose my job if I discuss anything with you". Although one time I've got so pissed off when I had an OB scan, and dad started asking me questions about baby, and when I said I can't diagnose, he said "Are you even trying to learn from doctors, or how do you scan without knowing what you do?" . I turned and look at him and said "We know". That is how I learned that some patients think that you can't diagnose because you have no clue of what are you looking at :(
sonography caught my eye, so i took the basic gen ed classes such as physics, bio, anatomy, algebra, and things like that. and i discovered that im actually not to keen on anatomy and physiology, mainly the physiology portion. im having major second thoughts as i feel it pays an important role.
Aw Magy, those classes are hard but once you get to the ultrasound specific classes it makes more sense. Do your best to get through it in all honesty, if ultrasound is something you want to do, definitely try!! I wasn’t good in pre reqs but when I got to the field stuff I feelllll in loveeee! ✨

Hey! I love your videos and I am thinking of going into this field! So I know you guys don’t diagnose, and instead describe what you see and write a report and send it to the doctor. When writing what you see are you literally just describing what you see, or do you have to put pieces together and write what you think could be going wrong and what the underlying issue is? I guess I am asking, what kinds of things are you writing in your report? I don’t know if that made sense haha!
Hahaha hi! Yes totally makes sense! You’re basically filling out a worksheet/ paperwork. It’s actually VERY simple, unless you work directly with a doctor.. but everywhere I’ve worked the paperwork is simple. You just describe what you see as abnormal.. what’s the echogenicity, texture, do you see a mass, fluid, something round something... irregular? And if it’s normal, you write “WNL” which is within normal limits. Nothing to see here. Haha. So depending where you work, the reports you write are different. But basically the same. Just learn the ultrasound terminology and you’ll be golden!!! Hope this helps! ✨

Hi love! Thanks for watching and supporting! Honestly the machines have easy to move wheels and what not just depends on which machine you have. Think of it like pushing a cart at the grocery store with stuff in it! And yeah I definitely can. You’ll frequently move them around if you work in a big hospital setting. Small outpatient settings you won’t have to move them much, rarely if all. And you can prevent injuries by being safe in all that you do! We learn about ergonomics and how to take care of our body! I’m a 25 year old male who’s looking into this job. Experience handling/up-keeping very expensive machines/equipment, dealing with and managing people and very good with people, handles stress very well, etc. What’s the ratio of men:women in this field and is it difficult for males to get a job being a sonographer?
That’s awesome! Glad you have experience. And can handle stress well. I’d say there’s more women than men but there are lots of men in this field. In my opinion I don’t thinks it’s difficult but I’ll have a male sonographer on soon to help you with their experiences. Definitely don’t be hesitant just because you’re male. I currently work with 4 males in my department and I’ve worked with more than 10 other males in my experience. On the sonography groups there are tons of males. So if you want to do the field, go for it! I have a video called “life of a registered vascular technologist” and I interviewed a male sonographer!
I have a question 👀 So, after receiving the education needed, you go through like an internship or some way to get hands-on learning and experience, to make sure that you know how to do your job before the job, right? But what if you come across something you don't understand/can't read? Has this ever happened to you? Hello! Good question. Yes, you get lots of clinical and externship experience. But yes you’re going to come across things you’ve never seen before. You’re not going to see everything in that six months or one year. You just learn as you go, this field is a learning field, you learn something new every single day. Just last night I saw something I’ve never seen before and I was stumped! But that’s how you learn. When you graduate you should be able to know how to work and of course as you go you should know how things look, or how to describe what you see. I hope this answer helps!
Your advice is so helpful! I’m currently in my first year of college and I truly want to work in the medical field. My problem is needles so once I discovered this job I was interested! My primary choice was almost becoming an RN... needles. People told me I’d get used to them anyways though. But do YOU have to perform alot of needles or do you just see them?
Aw thanks I’m so glad you’re listening and doing research!! You do get used to needles. As a general tech, I don’t use needles. I’ll place them out for doctors but at the end of the day they’re the ones sticking the patients, not you. In cardiac, you might have to start IVs but I’m not too sure about that one- I’ve seen some places just have the nurses and doctors do it, but you never know with cardiac. Me personally, I just place them out for the doctor! 🙂

How was your education and what programs did you have to get into? Did you have to be in a radiology technologist program first in order to be in a DMS program?
Hi there! Thanks for watching and for the questions! I was in a bachelors program. 4 year program. I didn’t have to be in another program I just went straight into ultrasound. Some places are different so just do research on the schools! Some graduating classes get white coats. My school did not. And we don’t really where them at work lol. When I see a white coat I automatically think doctor. But that’s just me!
Hi Kayla! If you plan on doing pediatric general, then you should do a general course program. If you plan on wanting to do pediatric echo then choose echo. If you choose pediatric it will most likely be pediatric only. What I did was go into a "general ultrasound program" which taught, abdomen, vascular, OB/GYN. In my clinical, they taught me pediatrics. I did NOT choose a cardiovascular program as that is usually "heart" only. So you must decide on the correct program depending on what type of exams you want to do,

It fluctuates between 60k-90k+ depending on how much I work and want to work. I also have 2 jobs so you have to factor that in. At certain hospitals you can’t negotiate and it’s a set wage. So I can’t at the hospital. The outpatient place I work at also isn’t negotiable. But there are contractors you can negotiate with.
Hi Phuong! It depends. If you are in a hospital, yes you may need to move the machine and bring it to a patient's room. We call them "portable exams." If you are in outpatient, you don't need to as patients usually come into your ultrasound room. Hope this helps!
Hey! I was wondering if some sonographers do actually diagnose? Or is it more of writing down your observations along with the images? I’m looking to major in this and I’ve been getting different information on that part of it lol
Mahalia Elliott hi!! I’m happy you’re doing your research. Pretty much sonographers do not diagnose. That is the doctor’s job. If we did, we wouldn’t need a doctor’s approval or a radiologist report. (We probably would also be making more money lol). If you work at some places like a doctor’s office or at a clinic, maybe the doctors are more LAX and trust you in your findings. But 99.9% of the time we do not diagnose because that’s not our job, our job is to take diagnostic images for the doctor and write up a report. Other modalities do not write up reports, I believe we are the only ones who do. If you diagnose and tell a patient what you find, and then a doctor says something different, you can get into loads of trouble. I hope this helps! 🤍
This is a little late. I am considering becoming an ultrasound tech I am currently in school for elementary education but sonography just appeals to me more the only thing is I don’t want a stressful job because I want to enjoy working. Would you consider sonography stressful? Do you know if most available jobs are in hospitals?
Hi!! It’s definitely a job that can be stressful. Depending on where you work, hospital or outpatient, the flow can be stressful. I enjoy the job though, so no amount of stress can make me not like this job. Most available jobs are in hospitals but there are lots of clinics and private practices who are in desperate need for sonographers. It’s a growing field!
I had an ultraounds last year an internal nad external I had to refuse the internal cause of virginity and religious status I was so happy the lady was like yeah Im glad you told me cuz I cant do the internal caus of virginity anyways she reasurrd me I would still get the best diagnostic even without the internal Such a sweet lady
Hi, I’m having trouble picking a program of focus for diagnostic medical sonography. It’s either between abdomen/obgyn or Echo& vascular. I don’t have any physical experience for either so I am unsure which I should choose to focus on ? Any suggestions ?
It depends! Echo and vascular -- mainly heart, veins, arteries all day. Abdomen/OBGYN/General will also include testicular, pelvics, kidneys, liver, procedures and more. What do you think will be more interesting to you? Maybe look up videos on the different types of exams to see what you like best. You can even find a program that does general and vascular and learn echo in the future if you're willing.

Hi!! Thank you so much for subscribing! Per diem sonographers can typically decide when they want to work so long as it works in conjunction with the employer. They will each have their discretions on how much they want you to work, rather expect you to work, and you give them what days you're available. You can work anywhere from 1-2-3-4-5 days a week just depends on the need of the employer. I typically would work 2-3 days a week at one job. And 2-3 days at another. So, I controlled my schedule!

Jackie Soriano not a dumb question at all! Everything always depends on where you work, but in my case and in my experience, per diems do not get PTO or insurance benefits. The benefit you get is HIGHER pay and more flexibility with schedule. At my current place of work they offer 401k with per diem. But at my last place of work, per diems had no benefits at all. Asmaa Peake hello again! per diem techs benefit from getting higher hourly pay, for example, a full timer may make around $35/hr but a per diem tech can make around $40/hr or more. It depends where you live (usually per diem will be paid cost of living so if you’re in California for example it could go all the way up to $60/hr). Hope this helps! If you google cost of living in each state that may give you an estimate!

Hey Marc! Thanks for looking into my ultrasound videos! The work life balance is pretty good. Lots of techs work 4 tens or 3 twelves and have pretty good schedules. It also depends if you work in a hospital or outpatient facility. The hardest part about working hospitals would have to be the call system they use for over night places, some don't have graveyard shifts. But, definitely do your research before switching over as there are drastic differences from nursing! I have a video talking about nursing and ultrasound and comparing the two! Good luck and don't hesitate to ask any questions if you need help!
I work at a facility where a nurse told me she was an ultrasound tech but decided to become a nurse and now wishes she stayed as an ultrasound tech. She mentioned that she wanted to switch it up. And now she would love to go back to ultrasound, but it’s been too long for her to be able reinstate her liscense because i think she would have to go back to school or retest i think.

Hello I watched your videos and I am very interested in becoming an ultrasound tech. I am a junior in high school. I am also debating on whether to become an ultrasound tech or a RN. Which career do you think is best? I am kinda worried about the pay because I want to be able to live a stable life and be able to buy my family stuff but I’m not sure if becoming an ultrasound technician would allow me to do that. Hi!! A certificate is usually for someone who already has a degree of some sort. There is usually no difference for getting a job but its more so for preference in which one you want/ need! Look at jobs in your area to see what their require!
IM a vascular tech and i work nights also, and i just have a question since you work nights when you do the routines and the patient is asleep , what do you do? do you wake them up or do you leave it for AM for day shift to do so the patient is awake?
Ah! Hello fellow vascular tech! Well, in our hospital our ER is usually busy up until 12-2 am-ish... if it is slow and we can do routines, we'll do the ICU/CVTU/ portable/ ventilated patients during this time, sometimes nurses call us and ask us to do certain exams, we also have pediatrics/ babies so we'll focus on those patients as well during the early morning. But if it's a med/surge patient who is sleeping, I'll contact the nurse and ask them if I should scan them now or if we should wait til the morning. Sometimes the nurses will ask the patient for me so I don't have to be the one to wake them lol. There's always work to do for us at our hospital. But if there's really nothing else, I'd wake up the patient because the longer you wait, then the longer it is til they get their results and ultimately making them become discharged even later. But it's all up to you! We don't really like to wake up med surge patients from 2am-4am. But do if we have to. :) Hope this helps!

Hey girlllll. That’s awesome, congrats. I always say Vegas is always hiring, I know so many places hiring. We truly are so busy in every hospital and outpatient facility. Hours can range, depending on hospital or outpatient. From 8 hour shifts to 10s to 12s. There are overnight call shifts. There are graveyard shifts. Hospitals require holidays and weekends and have morning, swing, and night shifts. Some outpatients don’t have weekends. Vegas is a great place for sonography. Good luck! ✨

Did you need any certifications before going into the program in college there's only one school here that has the program and they want you CNA certified before you can even start program
The community college I'm looking at requires that too. Maybe it's to learn the proper skills for moving patients and such and also learn basic care needs?
Hi! I did not need to have CNA beforehand. I know there are other programs that do require that. But there are also plenty that do not, so if that's something you don't want to do, you may need to look at other programs!
Nolan, you are correct! If the program requires prior medical experience, they just want you to have basics and knowledge of the healthcare industry before going into the sonography program. There are many programs who do require this but also many who do not! Just gotta choose what's best for you!
That is awesome! For me the hardest part was the physics and anatomy/physiology of it all. You just have to study hard and get good grades/ get into the program... yes, but the scanning is what can get difficult. You will learn over time! Good luck on your journey!

Hi! I have a few videos on what to do after high school. I suggest listening to our podcast Sonographers in the Cities to see what to expect as well as tips and advice! Anatomy/ physics will be your focus as well as sectional anatomy. Research schools and talk to guidance counselors for help. You got this! Yes, you can be an OB/GYN sonographer who works and specializes with babies only however you will need to go to school for "general diagnostic medical sonography" and learn everything. Then you will specialize in OB and apply to an OB office. :)

The program varies from 2-4 years. This may or may not include pre-reqs. CAAHEP.org can help you figure out which school is best for you. I have a video of this on my "ULTRASOUND" playlist. Hi, i don't know if you will see this, but i have a question, it is a stupid question but here we go - I have a super duper fear of needles. Is there any needles involved in sonography?
Not a stupid question!! For general techs, you just set up procedures (if you work somewhere with procedures) that have needles. Like you’ll open them and place them on the tray. But you don’t have to stick people. Now in cardiac you may come across needles but a lot of times the nurses use them! But for a majority wise (no procedures), no needles.
Asmaa Peake thank you for supporting and watching! I wear shoes with soft foam padding, like puma and Adidas. Also shoes I’m not afraid of getting dirty lol because I’m in a hospital. But, every doctor recommends new balance and asics. 🙂 choose something comfortable cause you’ll be standing a lot, I also wear compression socks 🙂
Hey its Butterz when you apply for the job usually the offer will be for “full time” or for “per diem.” It just depends what shifts they have and what they are offering :)
I did a bachelors program. I worked right away as a student. But most people who graduate can work right away after they pass their SPI and are on track to take their board exams. Just depends on where you live.

@@caitlingrote8556 hi!! yes we do "pelvic" ultrasounds that look at uterus, ovaries, cervix... pelvic area. As a sonographer (generally) you will learn how to do them as well!
It depends where you work. There are 4 tens. 5 eights. 3 twelves. I am per diem so I work all different shifts. At least 40 hours a week though for full time. Around 30 hours a week for part time. And per diem can range anywhere from 0 hours a week to 40 hours a week.
@@momay2670 in order to become per diem, the job must offer it to you and have that position open/ available. every place is different when it comes to benefits.. and you can let them know your availability, however the hours available depend on the workplace. hope this helps!
congrats on finishing your first year ! I'd say, use the Edelman seminar book if you can and study from that because it's exactly what you need for the exam. Understand the concepts more than memorizing and definitely purchase the Edelman X-zone or URR, they are very helpful to prepare for the exam!
@@Nohanih ultrasound definitely fits my personality more! Just like what you're thinking. I also didn't want to have the stresses a nurses have. The stress load between a nurse and a sonographer is much much different. Kinda look into pros and cons for ultrasound and see if it fits you for a career :)

I’m pretty sure I would love learning about how to save lives and all the equipment in the nursing program but not too sure about the stress compared to ultrasound tech
It may fit your schedule better. You can choose when you can and cannot work. You don’t have a set schedule. You will most likely get paid more. Some have benefits others do not. I for example have 401k as a per diem. But no PTO or insurance. I make enough to pay for my own insurance and I can request off whatever days I want. Only requirement is to work one weekend shift a month (at my specific hospital). And you’re not required to work 40 hours. It depends on your lifestyle. I’ll definitely do a video on this!
@@lolgeselle Also I do not have an associates/ Bachelors, I am currently a Licensed Massage Therapist, it is not considered a form of "Patient Care Training" so would I have to become a radiographic technologist first then do another 2 years of Sonography?
It depends on the program you go to. See if any of your classes will transfer over. I’d talk to a counselor of the program or advisor and see what classes you would need for the specific sonography program. All schools are different!

Hi! No ultrasound machines do not contain any radiation, it is used with sound waves and is not dangerous to the body. The only thing you need to watch out for is body ergonomics and how you are scanning your patients, making sure you’re scanning comfortably for your body!
this might sound stupid but i have an interest in a profession in the medical field but i have a strange fear of blood so do u see a lot of bloody and gory things in this job?
You’ll see blood for sure in the hospital, we do pelvic ultrasounds for vaginal bleeding, so if you go the general route you’ll see it much more than if you do echo... and outpatient much less likely but you’ll see it if your office does biopsies and procedures. But not as often as nurses and other medical field careers. Gory? Only if you work somewhere with an ER/ hospital type setting. If you work in a doctors office, outcome is much less.
