Loved this video. Many years ago I was the Island’s Director of Tourism and learnt to fly with the Airborne School of Flying, partly at Sandown and partly at Bournemouth. This was a brilliant grounding in controlled and uncontrolled airports, grass and sealed runways and in Sandown’s perpetual seaside crosswinds. Live in Australia these days and enjoy my flying here but would love to fly a pilgrimage back to Sandown one day.

It was nice to have Ben along for the ride. I've watched a lot of his videos over the years and seen him become a confident and safe pilot. Any airline would be fortunate to employ him.

Lovely to see you and Ben flying together Jon. Enjoyed this and liked especially the rear angle below looking forward. I do more uncontrolled arrivals than I do controlled. For best awareness for others in this circumstance, calls often are: 1. Descending dead-side 05 LH. 2. Crosswind 05 LH. 3. Late downwind 05 LH. 4. If busy circuit nothing wrong with calling the base leg, or 'extending downwind 05 LH' if you want better spacing. And of course lastly Final... It's all about letting others know where you are. Have a plan, and you'll be loving uncontrolled airfields, promise :)

Great to see two experienced pilots working together in a very positive manner. So much better that seeing egos trying to score points off each other as can happen - pilots have to be confident people by nature in order to fly and it is way too easy to allow confidence to develop into overconfidence. An ability to be able to work with others and accept advice is fundamental to safe and improving flying skills. Excellent!

Wonderful video and great having Ben along. I have so much admiration for Ben, watching him on his journey to become a pilot, which he self funded has been a great pleasure. Some great advice also delivered in a respectful way for a fellow pilot. Glad you all had a great day, you soon Jon ✈️

Great video as always. I prefer uncontrolled airfields as that is what I am used to. I crap myself at controlled airfields, usually over making sure I’m using the right terminology. The OH join is great. Was at Popham last weekend for the Microlight trade fair. Hundreds of aircraft flying in over the weekend. All using OH joins. No problems whatsoever. For me, more experience of controlled airfields is all that is needed. Keep up the good work!

Anyway, I'm really pleased to have watched this, it confirmed my prepping on how to join overhead for 05 (seems northerly winds are likely for early Sunday morning). Cheers!

Hey Jon...unfamiliar with uncontrolled airspace !!!...you need to come down under to Australia and enjoy the wonderful G space that covers the majority of the country. Such great freedom but with ATC available at all times. I head off from Adelaide to Tasmania (500 miles) on Monday (weather permitting) and will fly over the water at less then 10,000ft all uncontrolled. YT video of the trip once we get back. Good video with Ben. Cheers Ian

I just watched this today (New Year's Eve). I learned to fly at Wycombe Air Park in 1971 but moved to the US in 1979. Watching videos of GA flying in the UK exhausts me. It is SO complicated. In the US even IFR you just get a clearance and off you go, full service all the way. And VFR you can call ATC and get flight following and, with few exceptions, you can go anywhere you want. I have no idea why it's made so incredibly complicated in the UK.

I used to be really wary of uncontrolled fields having gained my PPL(A) at an international airport. Then I started flying from one and now they don't phase me (unless they have a complicated approach for whatever reason then there is always a little trepidation). We can't join overhead at Breighton as the dead side would be over the display area so I tend to come in on the crosswind and turn onto the downwind, thought it gets busy with training aircraft and Breighton is popular with local cross country trips so quite a bit of traffic comes our way. Great video as usual.

I liked the view over the M25/M23 junction, slightly puzzled that you were flying slightly north. Were you perhaps avoiding Merstham and the downs so that if there were an engine failure you could find a field to land? BTW don't wear sandles at Sandown airport, I know someone who got bitten by an adder there.

Good video Thanks.... Question on Uncontrolled fields (What we call Unicom in the US) Why bother having that dude sat on the ground on Frequency? It's not like he is any help ?
@gap9992
@gap9992 5 лет назад
See below for what you can expect at this kind of airfield in the UK. It's basically one step up from having nobody on the ground These fields have a dedicated frequency "Air/Ground (A/G) radio is the most basic form of radio ground station you will encounter at an aerodrome. Depending on the individual station, the operator of an air/ground radio may provide traffic and weather information to pilots operating on and in the vicinity of the aerodrome. Such traffic information is based primarily on reports made by other pilots. While information provided by the radio operator may be used to assist a pilot in making a decision, the safe conduct of the flight remains the pilot’s responsibility. The radio operator has no power to issue clearances or instruct aircraft either in the air or on the ground. In the A/G radio environment you should not request a “clearance” to do anything, nor should you expect to receive one. The normal callsign is “Radio” after the station name. When operating in the A/G environment, the basic principle is that aircraft announce their position and separate themselves from other aircraft in accordance with the Rules of the Air and any published aerodrome procedures. Only carry out a manoeuvre (such as taxiing, take-off or landing) if you are satisfied if it is safe to do so and will not conflict with other traffic." If you want to the full story on this and other subjects browse this document - I think it's one of the best publications from the CAA for PPLs publicapps.caa.co.uk/docs/33/CAA6395_Skyway_Code_AW_150817_SCREEN.pdf
@evanscm3
@evanscm3 5 лет назад
we're not lucky enough to have any AWOS freqs in the UK for getting automated WX info on the way in, so the operator passes this info. i tend to prefer the US system of getting the wx myself on the way in and self announcing on the common freq... the operator in a lot of instances (both in A/G and also INFORMATION setups can be a bit superfluous)
@evanscm3
@evanscm3 5 лет назад
obviously we do have ATIS at controlled airfields, i mean at uncontrolled there is no automated WX reporting system...

Nothing wrong in pilot flying and pilot monitoring some good crew management going on. Nice video. It's an uncontrolled airport, but there's still a guy saying "Roger" to everything you say on the radio, and he told you where to taxi. Is that the case for all uncontrolled airports in the UK? In Switzerland you just inform the other pilots, as far as I've discovered so far
@TheFlyingReporter
@TheFlyingReporter 5 лет назад
They give information, that's all. They don't offer any control on the ground or in the air. They are a radio operator, probably without any view of the airfield. They will probably be taking landing fees, and dealing with other airport admin at the same time.
