It's that time of year again where riding during daylight hours becomes tougher and tougher. Luckily, with some good equipment, you can make the most of those dark hours. But just how fast can you ride?

Night rides are on a different level. I've done most of them on trails I'm very familiar with, sometimes solo night rides, (don't recommend). Sometimes you think something is chasing you when you're in the back of the pack too!

Started night riding here in MD, US. I usually only bomb down trails that I'm very familiar with. Having a helmet light and handle bar light definitely helps a lot. Also the more people you go with the more lights you'll have! Night riding in the fall/winter time is my favorite
@SprSonik13
@SprSonik13 2 года назад
as many others are saying, good bar and helmet light and you can easily ride daytime pace at night. Best part about night riding is it is safer to rip on tight trails, since oncoming traffic is more visible. As to the lack of peripheral vision, you don’t need to see what is outside of your cone of light. I focus better at night since there is less visual data to process.
@benstep2
@benstep2 2 года назад
I night ride often and have a similar setup. I enjoy the solitude of night riding and the tunnel feel on the trails. The additional dangers are pedal strikes because you can’t always judge your pedal stroke to miss rocks and roots. Also I some time fist pump trees because it is hard to judge handle bar clearance in tight trails lined with woods. Thanks for the video.

I've been riding at night, I would recommend selecting a light with IP67, IP68 or IPX5 water proof rating, because one can never be to sure if rain is going to happen in fall/winter/spring. Good video, nicely done!
@paradox963
@paradox963 2 года назад
Love night riding, I would say that while having enough light is important the quality of that light is just as important, for my bar mount light I want something with a wider field of view, and a smooth fall off, so you don't get the tunnel effect. Light and motion makes quality stuff, but I really like the lights from Outbound Lighting they have a better beam pattern and don't require an external battery pack, though you can use them if you want longer life, but at 2.5 hours it's more than enough for my normal night rides.

I live in the tropics just south of Cancun in Playa del Carmen Mexico and the night ridding here is pretty cool. We don't have any downhills because this peninula is flat but the fire roads can get playfully technical with the rocks and a small roller coaster ups and downs make it really fun but good lights are a must. Especially because of the rocks and the wildlife.

Some of my best rides happen at night. Twin set up like here, and whilst they may not actually be as fast as day rides, they feel faster because of being so zoned in. Night riding goes one of two ways though. You can either be heightened focus, or you can be too scared of what you can't see.

@casper18795
@casper18795 2 года назад
Check out Outbound Lighting sometime. I have their Trail light on my stem and it is phenomenal. The wide, even, beam spread doesn't throw off depth perception or give the tunnel effect. The Trail Evo is available and should produce better light than my og Trail model. The beam pattern is more important than the lumens once you get over 1500-1700 lumens.

I get prs at night all the time! Go w a group of young dads, with all our lights it’s practically like riding in daylight. Also I think riding at night kinda gives you tunnel vision of sorts, you focus on stuff on the trail that’s an issue, stuff off to the side of the trail that you see in the daylight that you subconsciously slow down for you don’t see at night.

Ironic timing on this video...Did my first official Night Ride last night outside of my local trails (Which technically doesn't allow NR) and my advice is riding at Night can definitely be sketchy. It really helps if you know the trail like the back of your hand. I made pretty good timing and it didnt slow me down like crazy, but use caution. You dont want to wind up broken on the middle of the trail at night!

Former 24/12 hour racer here. Within about 5% is what the average seems to be...granted in that scenario you are busting out continuous laps so get quite familiar with the trail. Some of the team guys can get pretty close to day times - I think they just get more focused and lose judgement of how fast they're really going and take more risks than they would in the day.

The obstacles are less at night time, obstacles being other people, so I find some of my fastest times at night. Although most of my rides are at night especially this time of the season. But in summer it’s even more beneficial to eliminate the heat of the day. See if you can PRA climb at night?

400 lumens is plenty. I use a light (NiteRider Lumina Micro 650 - affordable, simple, reliable, rechargeable) that ranges to 650, super bright. I generally keep it at the 350 setting. I carry a spare old h-bar light in a pocket for emergencies. And a headlamp so I can find trail entries that are 90 degrees off the trail. Night riding rocks. I'm lucky to have plenty of canopied forest trails out my back door. They occasionally feed into wide open spaces (an orchard, power line roads) and on a clear, full moon night I can shut the lights down and ride in the moonlight. It's really cool, like riding in a different world. Grateful. Get out and night ride!!

Naaa, night laps are always faster for competent riders.. All the 24 hour races have provided clear evidence of this case. A head mounted zoomabke, 1000 lumen or better light with a 2+ hour runtime on high mode is key! Always a priority over a bike mounted light. Your bike doesn't have eyes and doesn't care about direction. Your eyes are going to set the direction and hence your light has to follow your head/eyes. Stress less, ride more! Stay safe.

i used to run 3600 bar, 1800 helmet. Running far less now and riding faster than ever on the fun stuff. Beam pattern means far more than lumens above @800. And those really bright lights can cause problems for people in front because of over powering shadows.
