That old guy is depressed, you can tell because of what happened in the movie. He never had a friend until his wife came along when they were kids. They grew up, fell in love, and married. She got sick and she died. This sent him into a spiraling depression that he couldn't manage so he was constantly grumpy and in a bad mood from insomnia. He would go any distance to be with his wife again. They wanted to go to that mountain, right? Maybe he wanted to die where his wife always wanted to go. The dog symbolized the happiness and arguments they had because of his hate-love relationship with him throughout the movie and the kid is a reminder that they never had a full family. It's a story about family and depression of a sad old man. The kid also symbolizes the thing that stopped him from jumping off the mountain...his wife would want him live a happy life. Maybe she always wanted kids but couldn't. So...that could be why the kid is there...it was all imaginary...the villain was his depression and him wanting to commit suicide and the dog and kid was the thing that led him to stay alive. It's a dark story Disney tells...but there is some evidence that supports my claim. Now...when you watch that movie again...think about this...CHILDHOOD RUINED!
