Oh man, with that scope you can't use clips. He's gotta hand load each shot. Weaponry has really made some amazing advances since War I. That, the BAR which is a heavy, heavy beast and limited capacity 1911. I'm suitably impressed with his commitment to going period at this match. Bravo, sir, bravo! Edit - I did like the way Karl quickly stepped back to avoid getting swept by the Colt.
@BravoCharleses
@BravoCharleses 2 года назад
Please forgive my ignorance, but doesn't the 1903 have an internal magazine which could be hand loaded one at a time and then used as a repeater? This would be different from a weapon like the M1 Garand that required a clip inside of it to provide the feedlips.
@Hawk1966
@Hawk1966 2 года назад
@@BravoCharleses I'm honestly not sure. Kinda hoped Karl or someone in the know would have seen this thread and set things right. I was completely guessing at there being something in the rules about starting empty and hand feeding being the way he wanted to go. You can see at the end of the video he's shooting through the barricade using the rifle as a repeater. I figured it had something to do with that specific match. I've never been to a brutality match and being disabled probably never will.

Like I commented to one of his DB2021 videos: he's truly a brother in spirit of Ian! Thanks to Karl for featuring him here! Guys like that, eccentric individuals they might be, but it's refreshing to see them getting fair scores and seemingly having a ton of fun, doing it! My advise for him on a pistol stage: if you have a longer distance to run to the next firing position, reload to have the maximum capacity in your single stack pistol. That way, you just might avoid an interruption in your string, which is always a nuisance. Just my humble opinion. Safe shooting!

Fun Fact: the original M1918A2 was made with a pistol grip on it similar to that of the FN Model D and even used a similar slow/fast auto mechanism. A few models were made and there’s an existing one up in Springfield Armory in MA in the advanced collection. However, the pistol grip was dropped quickly after once the Ordnance Board sent a memo requiring all of the firearms adopted must have parts interchangeability with the older models of gun. And since it also would’ve require modifications to the base 1918 model, the pistol grip on the A2 BAR was a short-lived endeavor and was dropped even before the US entered the war. That being said, the very first BAR to be marked “M1918A2” had a pistol grip on it. So a US military BAR with a pistol grip isn’t that far off.

If I recall correctly from Small Arms Repair training more than 50 years ago, you can assemble the rate-reducing plunger on a 1918A2 in any of four orientations and only one (at 6:00?) actually trips the autosear, but the other 3 produce semi-auto fire.

The military being so focused on accuracy came from the Native American wars out west. I had the chance to buy an 03/04 like he has many years ago. It had the original telescope on it but it was fogged up. The store owner stated he knew somebody who could fix it and he would send off and get it fixed if I bought it. The problem was I could not pay for the rifle in one go and the shop was just a little bit out of the way for me.

Karl, I expect those that liked the small aperture peep-sight were hunters before they were soldiers and qualified as Expert Marksmen that shot with both eyes open. Small aperture sights don't interfere as much with your situational awareness if both eyes are open. I'm Surprised the Marines didn't change out the front sight to give it a 200-yard zero and remark the rear sight. "It’s been said by firearms historians that the Germans brought a hunting rifle, the British brought a battle rifle, and the Americans brought a target rifle." - unknown.

Doughboys and GI's always seem mixed on the 03 sights. I've heard arguments for the peeps, and arguments for the rounded triangle cutout being the superior sight. I've found the latter works best for me despite not being able to go as far down as the peep. Should be noted after the experiences of WW1 the Marines moved to a larger front sight. Then challenged its place as recruits didn't do well on the ranges (that KD course winning again) but decided the #10's would stay. Prior to WW2, based on I believe the matches shot by the rifle team they moved back to #6 atandard sights but in variable heights calibrated to the individual rifle. I've also heard anecdotally that the rear peep was drilled larger, but haven't found sources on this. A family friend claimed the larger peep was useful during night engagements on Guadalcanal.

Y'all have to incorporate some swimming and shooting that would be brutal water makes everything hard. Maybe shooting from a small "raft" that you have to paddle maybe 30-40 yards with lines to stop and shoot targets then chest deep water they have to waid through with rifle over head. Ending in some rapid target engagement to simulate a small amphibious landing. If anyone can do it Karl can. The part where you paddle could be simply deep enough for the boat to float, and the last 10 feet could be 5ft deep.

@Hawk1966

Probably can't pre-load the weapon before the round starts and loading down would take almost as much time as single shotting it. I'm just guessing though. Could be wrong. @@davidabest7195 he can load the mag all the way up, the scope only prevents loading with a clip. However, loading the mag one round at a time is not much faster than using it as a single shot,. And if he should turn out not to need the full mag, then time spent loading those extra rounds would have been wasted. And then the stage rules may have dictated he end up with an empty rifle before moving on, in which case he'd have to cycle those extra rounds back out of the mag before continuing.
