This video is from a live chat Darin And I did together. The head and ports in beginning are the Ford 351 Cleveland A3 Motorsport Aluminum heads he did for me, Currently on the Cougar 409 Cleveland. It made 775hp, with too small of cam, and not enough compression. Next build 800hp goal. This video has some very cool concepts, the relation ship of the intake runner angle, and short turn radius. How the short turn effects power curve. As you stand up the short turn radius, that increases torque, as you lay down the short turn radius, that increases top end power. Also Darin gives a good example of why some heads make more peak power than others, even though they make close low and mid range. Just a great easy explanation of some concepts that are not really talked about much.
He also mention, Engine OverRev reasoning, and benefits, along with two worst things for a valve train, Shifting, and Rev limiter

Thanks to both of you for an insightful talk and I enjoyed every part of it. One thing Darin brings to the table is track experience and I come from the same line of thought from all the work he has done and tested at the tracks. Experience beats experiments and we know many out there do many things without the benefit of track results. Dealt with many thru the years doing all sorts of tests and when I ask track results they say none... Oh well. Keep it up and we stay in touch enjoying your videos immensely friend.

Thanks Ben, Darin was a fantastic job at explaining difficult topics, and yes, he does have the racing experience to go with it. The track tells the truth. You know that very well, with all the engines you have built. I will, so much already going on we will chat when we catch up...

Get with him on the short turn at higher RPM, now this is what I have learned in the past, Chrysler in the 60s measured airspeed in an intake at 800 MPH and it went higher in short runners, and the faster it went the less it wanted to do the short turn and it flew across the valve backside and out between the valve and the seat on the other side and that is when they started making the far side of the chaimber a 45 degree angle from the top edge of the seat up to the deck of the head, this kept the air stuck to the angle rather than it coming out from under the valve and slamming into a vertical wall

The short turn on Cleveland 2v heads is that square shape Darin made with his fingers, and it has a monster bowl. On a pressure drop flow bench, low lift flow is incredible up to about .35 lift at which point the numbers fall away and a hurricane noise starts up. When the short turn is made into a turn instead of a box edge, low lift suffers somewhat but the flow is steady from .35 to .55 and the turbulence goes away. Is there any point to messing with an open chamber 2v head? I was driven purely by curiosity, but what I found has driven me to find a purpose for these heads.
@DragBoss351Cleveland
@DragBoss351Cleveland 10 месяцев назад
Not a fan, but they will make power too. Remember not racing a flow bench.
@vadenk4433

I've seen pics of closed chamber 2V heads from Australia. I've had good results running 2V heads. I'm nothing more than a hobbyist though. But definitely check out Revan Evan's youtube channel. He's got a video of a friend who's fox body Mustang is running 10's with OEM iron, open chamber 2V Cleveland heads. Obviously he's running an aftermarket 2V 4bbl intake, with a hotter cam etc, etc.., but it's putting out 550 HP. And he says its a very basic build, using a lot of stock parts. And he's been racing it since the late 80's. It does wheel stands too :)

Can a larger port (vs standard for application) reduce the negative effects of a abrupt short side? As air flow is not touching the wall of short side? (Boundary layer)
@DragBoss351Cleveland
@DragBoss351Cleveland 10 месяцев назад
Not sure but the larger port will slow down the velocity and may allow smother entry?
@WesternReloader

@@DragBoss351Cleveland that’s kinda what I was getting at. Not thinking low rpm, more mid/upper. I run 190cc blueprint heads on my 331 sbf, and it’s geared so low rpm isn’t an issue. Still I wonder how much bigger port volume would improve flow before it’s too big
@DragBoss351Cleveland
@DragBoss351Cleveland 10 месяцев назад
@piercer2 I don’t think a flow bench would tell you accurately. To me it’s a track test. But what do I know? 😳

You ever find any info on those Cleveland heads i mentioned some weeks ago? They were a dart or world products head that was a cast head with aluminum plates that were an as cast head with the exhaust ports moved. I mentioned they were sold from summit in early 2000's for a sale price of 1000$. They were advised as a Bob Gliden head.👈

@@DragBoss351Cleveland still makes me wonder though, alot of guys I knew back in the day were running gt-40p heads in mustangs with nitros claiming all "stock" makes me wonder if they would have made more power. But I don't know if the intake would match to pull off the sleeper hustle.
