This is a video I made on the Rarest Ford Head in my opinion, created by Darin Morgan. To me they are rare, as I doubt there are many sets like this. We know Bob Glidden, was making this combustion chamber, on his Ford 351Cleveland iron heads, back in 1975. I discovered this by chance, looking through old photos that the Peterson museum had taken. I had made a video, documenting this. Bob Glidden's Pro stock 351 Cleveland Heads, his secret revealed. Talking with Rusty Glidden confirmed this. I will put a link so you can see the whole video. These heads started out as a set of A3 Ford Motorsport Aluminum heads. The A3 was the first Ford Motorsport Aluminum head. These came out in the early 80s, and were followed with multiple versions, including, the A4, ultra rare, B3, C3....and then the C3 Yates, which lead to the D3. It was basically an aluminum version of the Ford 351Cleveland iron 4V head. The iron Cleveland 4V head, was used as the basis for the High Port Pro Stock Cleveland heads that Bob Glidden, Dyno Don Nicholson, Gapp&Roush, and many others used in the pro stock wars of 1975-1981. Prior to and after those years, Big Blocks were raced. The floor of the stock intake port is raised, the same as if you filled it with port stuffers. Inserts, either aluminum, or epoxy, placed on the floor of the intake runner where it meets the intake port, to straighten and increase velocity. The exhaust port is raised the same as the old Iron Pro stock heads, with the iron exhaust port cut off, and a raised 1.25 inches aluminum plate bolted on, and ported to match the transition. This allowed for straighter exit, and increased flow. They the port plates added roughly 25hp. These secret A3 heads have the benefits of the Iron high port configuration, but in aluminum. These heads have had extensive porting, but what is really unique, is the cortoid shape of the combustion chamber. This encompassed a huge amount of welding rod, and effort. Thank you Darin Morgan. These are going to be used for the ALCOA Supra Cast Aluminum TrackBoss 427 Cleveland...Stay tuned. Happy 6 th Birthday Alaina.

Darin is a monster!!! He's not only a hellufa craftsman, but he's probably forgotten more about airflow dynamics and the science (MATH!!!) involved than most will ever know. Once Darin starts to figure out your cam specs, have him hook you up with Billy Godbold over at Comp to pick the lobes. It should be a killer piece!! Good luck on the project!! Nice to see the progress.

Those are the big port A3's, like the ones I have. Made for the 2 plus mile tracks. I was told when I ordered mine there was two other versions for shorter tracks. They had smaller ports, I presume but was not told that might be for better torque out of the corners. Sure nice to see some other ones of these. I've been working on acquiring parts to put these to use in my dirt late model. Years ago I bought some Carrillo rods, and pistons from someone off ebay, they are a nice Wiseco high compression piston, oddly 4.035 bore. With these parts It appears the engine is going to be a 393, although I wish it was a 408 instead. Still need a crank and aluminum 9.2 block. Most everything else I have. Thanks for showing off these old parts. I'm hoping I'll be close to 800hp, probably end of around 775 but we'll see. I'm running a 347 at a little over 600hp now, maybe 630. Can't wait to have a little more torque in the corners. I have a Roush manifold for these heads, one for the 9.2 block, and another odd one for an 8.2 block.

Who knew? I mean 40 years ago all the hotrod books on the shelves would headline the small block chevy. You'd once in a while find an article on the Cleveland, The big secret they'd describe is port matching the intake and manifold ports. But those of us that worked with that great engine knew there were secrets buried deep within those heads because Bob Glidden was annihilating the competition with them. Problem was: He wasn't talking! For instance the time he wrecked his Pinto and covered up the intake manifold. I asked an experienced circle track racer that was using both a Cleveland and small block Ford what the deal was with the intake manifold. He said it was all put on. He did that to take your eyes away from what he was really doing. So the secrets stayed hidden until many years later. Glad you're here to share them with us. And Happy 6th Birthday to Helena!!

@@DragBoss351Cleveland , Tim it may be an old cliche but it’s always relevant...”Our children are the World’s future “. Maybe not those exact words but hopefully the point is the same. The way you’re offering your knowledge to your daughters is highly commendable. We can’t predict the future with much accuracy but we can analyze possible scenarios. Our young people have decisions to make everyday. Early on it may only be deciding if their favorite animations are Peppa Pig or Sponge Bob. But later when the between-age madness starts to set in, their decisions can have positive or negative influences on what’s coming next. A young person who’s parents never have the inclination to provide different options to stimulate young minds and hopefully, get them involved in something really cool (and legal) to occupy their minds and hands while pursuing it. Without anything creative to do, boredom takes the place of common sense. Then another kids collection of crack pipes might become a tragic point of interest. OR ONE OR BOTH PARENTS OPENED A FASCINATING ALTERNATIVE BY OPENING THE DOORS TO DAD’S SHOP. Inside they found some of the coolest stuff in the world 🌎, and a happy ending to this scenario. That the values you instill upon them will last a lifetime. I want them to be able to survive...without me when the time comes. First and foremost, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ELAINA 🎉. The future Lady DragBoss 🏁. The Cougar is definitely out of the bag on those “Secret”, Secret weapon A3’s. Your presentation covered the specific physical details along with an easy to understand explanation of how and why highly motivated people like Glidden and Morgan would go to such extremes to extract power that’s “free” and theirs for the taking. To most people that are intimately familiar with building maximum effort competition engines, they might be able to justify the extensive amount of labor required to change the combustion chamber’s shape/volume for a return of “only” 25 or so lb/ft of precious torque. But just consider the highly competitive nature of Pro Stock and each engine, regardless of the manufacturer, is making nearly identical power levels to qualify within a few thousandths at the top of the qualifying ladder. With that in mind, just think about the huge competitive edge that having 25 additional pounds of torque would provide when you’re side by side on a run for all the marbles and you’re slowly taking the lead against the competition. When the win light has your name all over it, the labor intensive quest for that extra bit of torque becomes the stuff that CHAMPIONS are made of. There’s great engine builders...then the very few elite masters of their craft that all others are trying desperately to take down because they have a 25 lb/ft “secret”. 🏁

Thanks Joe, these are just an experiment, to me I correlate them to a glidden iron 4v, after he welded and made a similar combustion chamber as I showed in video, but in aluminum and with Darin Morgan’s set on Kill rating, best of both worlds. As people have said too much to duplicate, but can has some done yourself too. The newer heads are better as they have even higher ports, much easier to get to the end result. I just got a set of A3s, in and going to have them freshened by Morgan. , got plans, now that I have a set of headers for 67-70 Mustang Cougars

so happy to have found other people who love the Cleveland as much as I do. I even named my dog Cleveland. lol. everyone wants to rave over their Windsors but a well put together Cleveland will out torque the pants of any Windsor given it's a fair fight. those heads look like a fantastic piece of craftmanship, dam near artistry and they sure beat the old closed chamber 2V's i was running on my 353 and a quarter. lol. , mind you, I took the time to port match everything. I mean everything. right down to water and oil galleries between the block and the heads. even oil pump to block and pump to pick up. I digress, fond memories. unfortunately here in Australia, Cleveland bits are becoming dearer and you can find late model, old and aftermarket bits for Windsor's as cheap as. sux. i would also would like to know how much this work effected compression ratio? thanks from Oz.

Hey William, thanks for finding my channel. I agree that a Cleveland had more potential than a Windsor. The Windsor benefits from 50 years of development. You can see where that is going. But from an old school perspective, the right basis combo on a cleveland and watch out. Those heads have a about 20 hrs in them so far. Not sure on combustion chamber may ck it quick before I ship it it off to get finished. Thanks for keeping the Cleveland alive and stay tuned.

Thats alot of work. I would Love to see more close up views of that head, around the seat and under to the short side. I have listened to 4 plus hours of his vids. Darin Morgan has a Very interesting perspective, he has and it made me think alot. He spoke about turbulence, and I had trouble with turbulence on my c302b's back in the 1990s. around 0.700 lift area)..and overall those heads made great power for what they were. I ran the larger valve in them (some guys ran 2.15) I ran 2.19 and 1.71 while some guys ran 1.60 I ran that roush intake (9.2) and that is a nice manifold. I was curious to see under that 4 hole spacer-how he did the runner inlet....but all the magic is under the seat anyways. I was looking at Those A3's and looking to see if he put a fin in them to divert the wet flow to plug area. looks like the morgan A3 has a slight difference in some of those little water-steam holes on the deck from your other one. Initially, mine was a 357inch with a mild roller 11.7 to 1 and I shifted it at 7000 and ran 10.3 @133 @3200 in 1993. Later we opened the heads up more, picked up 30cfm-but it didnt make a huge improvement. Then I built a 398 svo block....14 to 1..a little more cam and it ran to 7600 rpm. best was 9.72 @142 @3250 lbs ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-trmWPCvReUk.html been watching your channel. thanks. ps. Any thoughts on choosing a cam for the 4V open chamber heads to improve dynamic compression a bit? Would it be as easy as advancing the existing factory cam 4~5 degrees as a starting point? I've still got a set of these "unloved" heads kicking around along with the intake and was noticing the valve heads aren't shrouded due to the open chamber, as if they were designed with a 4 inch bore in mind? This got me thinking (dangerous, I know...). My Cleveland is the lethargic H code and I've been giving this some thought again (Tim's fault, LOL?).
@DragBoss351Cleveland
@DragBoss351Cleveland 3 года назад
Those heads if they are the 73 are really one of the best flowing 4Vs. I would be checking cam, bet it needs to be advanced. If you advance it, you will reduce PV clearance, better make sure that is ok. One of the issues with street Cleveland is that many times cam is in straight up at 110 and cars are dogs add no stall, no headers and lame gears. I would evaluate those aspects. If factory cam, now that might be a big factor

@@DragBoss351Cleveland It's an untouched H code from 1973, I purchased it in '78 I believe. Ok, bro. Took me too long to find you again. I turned on the bell so get all your updates. I know this is an old video but I'm a bit behind on your show. A person in Comments or you told me that a 351 C will fit into a 1966 Mustang. I have been busy reading about Ford Heads why they are so good in design, and why the Quad carbs are a 40+hp bolt-on. My update is I have found here in Alaska a 1996 351 w. not a big deal in the lower 48 but in Alaska to get a person to let go of a Ford motor, pulling teeth would be easier. So now what, I was told by a couple of people here that they had never built a clever that ran right and I was just wasting my time. Not only do I have a goal I also have a challenge on my hands. Need some help and I know I'm in the right place.

But, stitching a case of welding rod on, some good machining, and getting one of the best airflow guys to spend 100+ hours reconfiguring, would put almost any casting on kill, right? 40 years ago, when they welded the top of GM W-port P/S heads, it was the only available starting point, and the stakes were exponentially higher. @@DragBoss351Cleveland I am in Australia and am part of a group that was dealing with the cleveland engine back in 1969-70. The head of the group is John Bennett who formulated the specs for the engines installlation into the Falcon road car. In the process he discovered the unique cooling system that engine had. They ran a bucket thermostat which when heated would block the internal bypass allowing coolant from the heads to flow to the radiator. There was specific instruction that did come with those engines from Ford in the US , and that was to NEVER install that engine with a crossflow radiator. When Ford Australia moved from the XY Falcon , which had a top bottom tank radiator , to the XA Falcon which had a crossflow radiator , the warranty claims started flowing all mostly based around blown head gaskets. The other issue was the availability of the bucket thermostat which was changed to a completely different thermostat which when opened didNOT close the internal bypass. This is just the tip of the iceberg. But when we addressed all of those problems we were able to get an engine which was capable of mega power and reliability.

@@DragBoss351Cleveland at this point, it's tough to say. The info we hear these days isnt always clear or reliable. I was always under the impression there weren't but a dozen actually made. A couple still exist. One fella to ask would be Frenchtown Flyer...he's on several Ford forums. Really smart dude. Guess he was an engineer for Fomoco back in the day. I believe he actually owns one of the few crossflow heads that still exist. Bruce Sizemore is actually working on developing new heads for the 300-6, with the help of some racing acquaintances and other professionals. One being a newly designed crossflow unit. It's posted on the same forums as well.

That's how race heads were done, back when you couldn't throw money on the counter and walk away with them, it's not magic - it's old school craftsmanship. Every race/high performance part in the industry originated from a factory part extensively modified by someone making what they couldn't buy or afford. Even the billet heads and blocks available have their roots in a factory part, extensively modified and then re - engineered to be cnc machined from a solid billet. These A3s may have been 'secret', but not this set - they're like every other set of fully worked, remade (by master craftsmen) heads.

@@DragBoss351Cleveland yes, Jay probably has more Ford high performance and rare parts than anyone else in the universe. About 2 years ago I sold him my GT 40 Mirage Aluminum engine and a c8fe Indy dry sump block with the big main cap ears for mounting the pump so it was inside the oil pan. Gus T who knows Chad (AKA Reverend Cleveland) also has a fair amount of stuff including a set of early Cleveland heads with the water coming out the front. There's Randy G in Southern California that has numerous rare parts also and also has the SK log books. Gus has XE log books. There's a couple of brothers here in California that used to race a 428 CJ with Canadian heads that bought a lot of stuff from Gurney about 35 years ago . They had one of the Aluminum Mirage GT40 blocks I tried to buy and one of the Indy Cleveland blocks also. There are lots of Westlake heads around the world, they even made a few big block heads.

Waaaaaaaaaaaay, toooooo, much work . This went away in the Eighties in Pro Stock . Isn't there a casting *anywhere * with enough meat in it to make these mods with zero welding ? ,,, Btw, now you have to get the heads heat treated, back up to a T-6 condition or the valve job will walk all over the place . ,,, on edit: I should say that this kind of work went away for the GM crowd, bit I'm sure Bob was still welding Shotgun castings . Only because Ford didn't have any good raw, modern, castings for him .

@@DragBoss351Cleveland ,,, well, my point is, Darrin can set you up to make a thousand horsepower, from 358 cubes, with probably no welding . Yes, you will have to rev it to 10,500 or more . I'm, 77 and still learn most days, I think you are ready now . Oh I can do it also, and the heads Darrin will set you up with will make these welded nightmares look as old as they are . Thinking 4.090 , X 3.400 .

great vid, wanted to share another old p/s head trick not well know from a old P/S racer. Along with chamber welding on old iron heads "from those in the know" also increased valve curtain area by using 2.30"+ intake valves by moving exh guides over along with offset dowels on 4.125"+ bore blocks. It has Always been a LIE that the smaller 2.19" valve was better for low end power.
@DragBoss351Cleveland
@DragBoss351Cleveland Год назад
I’ve heard of moving the heads on the block, not sure 4.125 bore a little rough for the Cleveland box, maybe some of the Xe could handle us usually about 80 over is about all they could do to. I did not know about the increase valve, can’t comment on that, but I know that too big a valve is worse than having to smaller bell. Darin Morgan told me about that. so many things were done, personally I just don’t know. But also I am talking Cleveland’s.
@393boss
@393boss Год назад
I know it maybe hard for some to get the bigger intake valve thing as the smaller valve bs has been pushed on public/Pat Ganahl's book for years and yes this big valve mod was only for meant for the siamesed XE W&C blocks (& furness brazed W&C blocks), the bigger curtain area increases early/low lift cyl fill #'s & along with this trick "those in the know" pro stockers in past used lower 1.65 ratio rockers putting bigger lift/dur #'s on to the cam helping valvetrain. Today the best 1000+hp "D3" type n/a heads are using 2.30"+ / 1.65 valves with 3.6"+ c/s. Some forget the org Boss heads were designed to use 2.230" valves, sorry i cant post links but... DR J showed/said... ("the 2.25 valve fixes a lot of the problems with the heads. With a 2.19 the low lift flow will go down quite a bit, because of the factory under cuts in the valve set. The larger valve allows us to clean all of that up") ...also had recent talks with FPS/Troy again saying/doing same thing (btw been dealing with Troy for many yrs, Very knowledgeable guy, recently got more of his xtc-r A3-T/A port heads)... goo gle "351C Avenger heads corral" btw, your DM ported A3 heads also look like about 2-1/4" tall port & if your wondering, i was recently banned on corral for offending Gay member by calling him a dfag racer & just remembered Kato Eng, that was also banned for offending Gays in 5.0/5.8 on corral talked about doing this same big valve head mod in/with P/S MII.

Sounds like a lot of information, too much for my brain. I just do it works for me. I’ve ran Cleveland‘s with 2.3, and 2.19, never really saw much difference, but combinations are not built to the max. I’ve known Troy Bowen, since 1998, i’m ordering my first Cleveland from him. Had problems with a crack block initially, and then the oil galley plug was left loose in the back. that’s all came from him. Had that oil pan off multiple times think it was a rear main seal. I was learn to check them after that. I haven’t went to California to visit him, after that, the engine ran well, that had heads had ported, and had that size valve. I have nothing to compare to, could stop running iron heads after that. I look at it this way, as far as being banned, I see you were given Tom Siel talk about Lisk challenger, versus sudden death. Will have her own opinions, but it gets nastier derogatory. I just hide the user I don’t see anything it’s just done I don’t need to go through a bunch of BS. I appreciate information from all people and respect people lots information we gain from everybody, but also do it works for you I don’t argue points I mention what I feel and if the other person doesn’t care or wants to argue about it, I don’t waste my time too much to do. yes I remember Kati engineering from back in the message board days. I may copy this and Darin, what his opinion is but in truth, it doesn’t really affect me and my goals, I only have five more engines or sort of build and then I’m done with all that. Appreciate it man. Glad you’re here.
