Everyone wants to argue over a couple things: 1. Whether or not Trunks was actually stronger than Cell. 2. Whether or not Goku could’ve actually beaten Cell in the Cell Games. My take: I do think Goku could’ve beaten Cell. 100% A the very least he stood a pretty good chance. By the time Goku got to Other World post Cell Games he was already working on Super Sayain 3. And even had the strength of a Super Sayain 2 when he was training inside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. He was pretty much like Trunks was in this fight. Pushed hard enough there’s no way Goku of ALL people would not be able to win. He’s even stated in the Buu Saga at least a couple times that he could’ve killed the Fat Buu early on and during his fight with Kid Buu Goku said to Vegeta that he probably could’ve killed Kid Buu if Goku went all out at 100% from the start but let the fight drag on so Vegeta could have a turn. Goku underestimates himself at times including the Cell Games. Hell when he “gave up” Goku was still in Super Sayain form so it’s really not like he was too drained. As for Trunks, from what it seems he already had the strength comparable to that of a Super Sayain 2 but no where near the speed to compensate. So yes technically he was stronger than Cell. I can really see a reason why Cell wouldn’t have gone at least close to 100% against Trunks. After all he said Vegeta was the warm up not Trunks. So it’s very likely he was going all out.

Why so many people think that trunks was stronger than cell but lacked speed?? Super sayian grade 3 trunks was WAY weaker than cell,goku and gohan. Goku and Gohan used super sayian grade 4 Which is stronger than grade 2 super sayian(The form vegeta used against cell) and grade 3 super sayian (The useless bulky form of trunks) and cell was heavily suppressed in this fight and just as krillin stated he was hiding his true power until he fought super sayian 2 Gohan. Some comments even say that ultra super sayian is as strong as ssj 2 gohan , that is pure bullshit and an immature statement. To summarize = SSJ2 Gohan Full power >>> Super perfect cell>SSj2 Gohan (heavily suppressed) > perfect cell > Super sayian grade 4 goku > Ultra super sayian vegeta > Ultra super sayian trunks. SSj 2 gohan was always stronger than cell even when he came back after the explosion. if they fought, gohan ssj 2 would have demolished his ass again. Vegeta's Ultra super sayian was STRONGER than Trunk's Ultra super sayian. Its just that trunks was dumb and thought that vegeta could not go into grade 3. Vegeta could have gone into grade 3 super sayian but knew of its weakness so choose not to.

Trunks is a fool thinking he surpassed vegeta's power. Vegeta knew this form has weakness that's why he didn't do it.
