That point about fuel flow/altitude and speed blew my mind. I had no idea it matched based on speed, no matter the altitude. One of your vids was recently recommended to me, very happy to have found this channel!
Corner speed is actually the name for the minimum speed where max instantaneous rate is achieved, used as a guideline for achieving min turn radius. Max sustained rate is achieved at speeds where Ps=0, which I don't recall there being a specific name for other than "best maneuvering speed".
Dude! Great info! I been wondering how to manage my speed, fuel, and trying to find out best cruise speed and altitude. Seems like I run out of fuel so fast in the Viper.
Thank you for a clean and nice video. Missing climb but i see you commented that below. One thing i would like to stress, and you are briefly talk about is to not climb too high and get energy starved. Something i see online quite a bit lots of bags, and trying to fly too high with a very draggy load, with the plane hanging on it's ass with a high AoA and the plane just being slow due to the added drag. Standard IRL A2A is only a centerline bag if needed and the Wng bags are standard for A2G configurations that need loitertime over manouverability. And for GS you really don't need bags unless you use what i call concorde technique. Where you use bags to go full AB to around 50k feet for a massive missile range advantage. At that altitude you will have to run full AB, but you will consume about the same as at 30k full mill. Boring strat but safer for new players :D
Great info, subscribed! I've had the F-16 for a bit but the Hornet has been my main ride. Since I got a tip to take curves off the Viper my interest is rekindled. Good plane to learn some of these fundamentals in.

Great Vid with very useful info, just getting back into DCS World after a 12 year gap and the F16 will be my goto jet as i used to fly Falcon 4 in the early 2000's, but i'm teaching myself to fly the Spitfire just now to teach myself how to fly properly before i get into the jets again. I think it's all to easy if you're just getting into flight sims (your young or just watched the new Top Gun Movie) to to jump into a jet in DCS an just use that raw power the jets have to throw yourself around without actually learning about energy management and that in reality throttle controls altutude, and pitch controls speed. Take a few flying lessons in a Cessna and your instructor will teach you that you think throttle is for speed and pitch for altitude but it's actually the other way round in planes, but the jets with all that power teach you some bad habits. Will be watching your other vids and waiting for more liked and Subscibed O7
What I would really like to see (and which I've found nowhere on YT) is how to climb and maintain speed without dipping into after burner (kind of the portion of the video you edited out to discuss differences in speed readings). So often with my group, I'm tasked with leading navigation, and during the climb no matter how fast we start (at least 400 knots), or how shallow, we STRUGGLE to get to 25,000 ft. We're often hovering at 270 kts or less before we reach that altitude. Weapons stores are usually not that heavy either. Not sure what to do to make climbing less strenuous honestly.
Set the power and pitch for speed. In a nutshell, and going from memory, here is a climb profile you can use with wingmen Full AB t/o, pitch up to put the aircraft FPM about 5 degrees. At 300 kts, mil power. Accelerate to 350 knots. At 350 knots pull the power back about 20% and pitch up to roughly 10 degrees nose up. FTIT temp about 800 degrees, fuel flow in the 9000/lbs range. You want reduced power so your wingmen can stay on your wing without needing afterburner. As you climb, fuel flows and the power produced will drop. Shallow out your climb angle to maintain 350 knots. Going significantly below this speed hurts climb performance. Adjust power to maintain 800 degrees FTIT As you climb through 20k you’ll notice the climb getting real shallow to maintain 350 knots and the Mach number is increasing. Maintain 350 knots (with pitch, leave the power set) until Mach reaches .75 then transition to maintaining .75 Mach and forget about the CAS (airspeed number). This transition should happen in the low 20’s
Your just climbing too fast. Set to mil power after takeoff, climb at 350kn and reduce the climb angle to maintain it until you reach your desired altitude. Remember 25K feet is almost 5 miles high. The air is thin as hell at that altitude. No air, no power. Just be patient and remember real pilots aren't doing unrestricted zoom climbs unless it's for air shows or press flights. If you are delivering warheads on foreheads you have become the bomb truck. Drive the truck efficiently.
Awesome information about speeds and fuel management, thank you! One thing I don't know is what is the typical climbing angle and speed after take-off? I want to get to 20k ft, what should my climb and speed be. I just wing it but there is probably standard procedures I am ignorant about.
Speed 350 knots. Set power and reduce the pitch as you climb to maintain that. After 20k feet you’ll notice Mach is creeping up through .7 .. at .75 Mach transition to maintaining Mach in the climb and don’t worry about knots any more. The knots will drop as you continue climbing.
Lemoine, an actual F-16 pilot, would probably disagree with most of what you said regarding the turn rate/speed bleed at supersonic. The F-16 is designed to retain the energy through the turn. You don't want to "dump speed" by normal maneuver. If you want to turn faster, drop your throttle or use another maneuver.
is their a chart for v speeds?? in the hornet you can tell when she wants to fly, in the falcon not so much. I usually rotate around 175kts and climb out at say 350 or greater. having a v speed chart for weights would be fantastic, as I use them and have been the last 30 years..
When doing BFM in the f16 should the HUD be set to display CAS or TAS? Which one do I base 430 knot rate speed on since there is a notable difference between the two the higher up you go?
You’ll want to fly with it in the default setting, CAS. TAS and GS are really just useful for checking your performance if you are transiting between locations.
If any of this is a revelation, read the performance manual. Specifically the B section that uses the GE engine that is in the DCS F16. And I'm not trying to rag on this video; if you're new to sim flying this is especially good and easy to understand. But, if there's a performance manual available for a specific aircraft you're learning/flying, download it and use it. *only download it if it's legal for you. Not recommending you cross the US federal government.
That is a good strategy. You kind of fly it like an airliner, set power between like 85-100% and adjust pitch for speed. say 350 loaded and 375/400 when light and once you reach mach .72/.75 when heavy or .80 when light you pitch for that. And once you cdrop below say 500 or 200 ft/min you level off to have some power reserves.
