Today I want to show you how to navigate from point A to point B using NDBs. This video shows a simplified approach and leaves room for hopefully a followup video, going a bit more into details.

great explanation of the radio compass: made total sense once I understood that it's pointing to clock directions and not the actual compass

Hey John, excellent video! I've had the A-10C for DCS for a long time and had a hard time with navigating without my big fancy GPS screen to tell me where to go when I got the Sabre recently. This video helped a lot, there'll be one less lost Sabre pilot flying in circles out there thanks to you!

Love your videos! I'm very happy you published it with the error of selecting the wrong NDB... I learn more from that than I would if you would have remade the video without errors. Thanks! Keep up the good work!

you can now use the kneeboard to tune in accurately to the freq. It changes in the kneeboard as you scroll thru the freqs. Great vid, I tried the training mission but I think they make it more difficult than it needs to be.

Let me give you an update folks, its April 2020: The NDB do not work. Sit on the ground, turn on your ADF and cycle through the stations, either using the map (F10) or any of the published maps like Lino Germany and you will quickly find that the listed frequencies for airports do not match the airports. The identifier morse code is wrong. There are a few that do work, but the rest are incorrect. If you go to any other theater (Nevada, Middle East) there are so few NDBs that it's not even worth it. SO your NAV system fro the F-86 is inop.

Nice thanks. If you are going to continue with doing tutorials, you might want to change the layout of your channel page. You can do it by clicking the pen tool in top right of each panel on main part of page, which will let you give it a nice layout. Nice videos, and could be most useful. I hope you do more with the Sabre and possibly the A10C later on. Subbed.

Thanks for the suggestion! I adjusted the channel page a bit and also uploaded a trailer yesterday. I will do some more videos about the Sabre, but I am also planning to do some videos about the MiG-21. The A-10C isn't on the near tearm future plan unfortunatly, but if I run out of stuff to do tutorials on, I will keep it in mind!

The Link for dcs beacon map don't work. Do you have another place to take it ?

It seems to be not available right now, as it has been updated recently. I guess it should become available in the next days again. You can see the full post about the map here: forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?s=74d8c6099c38dc270d618d283e85c48b&t=120699

Do all NDBs e.g. Senaki and Kobuleti work? Cos all I get are Kierra Tango or Tango India like morse codes? BTW why are your morse codes so short? 489 for example is ....- ---.. ----. . Yours however is .- ...- ?
@xxJohnxx77
@xxJohnxx77 9 лет назад
The Morse codes might be currently bugged in DCS, so I would not completely depend on them. However, as far as I know all of them should work!

Old video... but your morse code sound file was glitching out. thats why it was confusing lol

I think there is something wrong with the morse codes right now...I almost always seem to hear dual transmissions.
@xxJohnxx77
@xxJohnxx77 10 лет назад
This is interesting to hear, because I was thinking the same. Before I recorded this video, I tried to identify the morsecodes, just to make sure it will work during the video. I was 100% that the morsecodes for the departure and destination worked correctly and where easy to identify. However, when recording the video they sounded diffrent. I couldn't really identify them anymore (as you have noticed in the video). I thought it was just me, but we could be onto something.

John, there's nothing wrong with your ears or hearing morse code properly. It's playing several stations overlapped. IRL this would be evidence of a selectivity problem in your radio, but I don't think that's the intention here. 40's and 50's vintage ADF worked very well, and didn't have serious selectivity issues. It seems that the first station you successfully tune in does not stop playing its identification, when you tune off and onto the next one. Indeed it may play the morse for all stations you select. In the Belsimtek Huey and other aircraft with ADF capability, this does not happen. What's strange, is that the Belsimtek implementation for the Huey is just fine. They could almost have copied it verbatim, but with another 3D panel to drive it, and it'd be OK. But this bug does make it impossible to do the age-old TIT (Tune, Identify, Test) check that all pilots do when using NDBs until the morse-bug is fixed.
@xxJohnxx77
@xxJohnxx77 10 лет назад
sleat Thank you for your comment. Yeah, I figured there was something wrong. Identifying ADFs or VORs for that matter by listenening to the morse code shouldn't be that difficult. I assume it could be a similar problem to the never ending seeker tone of the Air-to-Air missile, even if it has been switched off again. But I guess thats beta...
@sleat
@sleat 10 лет назад
xxJohnxx If you try the ADF in the Huey, it works fine. I use it lots. It's as if the initially played morse sequence is not being turned off when a new station is tuned, and so they overplay each other.
@Zabuzard
@Zabuzard 10 лет назад
sleat You guys identified the problem correct but it's not Sabres fault. The problem is DCS World related and can be reproduced in other A/Cs too -> forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=127847

xxJohnxx Hi John. The map you put into the description is just an image map. How to put it into dcs world?
@xxJohnxx77
@xxJohnxx77 9 лет назад
sungmachine Sorry, not too sure about that. I normally use the map just before the flight to take measurements and frequencies which I write down on a piece of paper. However, I also have a small laminated version off it, on which I can write with a erasable pen. Often quit handy when trying to remember some contact positions or something similar!
