That F1 is crap in turnfights. It should be played as stalker, rungun and away. Like Luftwaffe pilots did in WW2.

Pickups: good to hear that I'm not alone in finding it hard to resist the urge to just pull the enemy into the HUD. However, spotting in DCS is so tough that I'm loathe to ever let the bad guy get out of my line of sight once I've got visual. Would love to see some of these with some tips for fighting in the MiG-21! :)

It will come. These are my favourite videos on the channel but they are really hard to make because of trying to find a nice bit size fight that can fit enough commentary in it. I will do one as soon as i can.

Oh this is cool. I really appreciate the different methods you've been using to teach dog fighting tactics. I don't think I've seen a video with commentary like this before, it's a great idea to get other perspectives on something which can be so instinct and reflex based.

Hi, I was the guy you fought. Good fight! I actually didn't see you until very late, when you were already kind of behind me. I dipped my nose because I had been pulling a tad too hard to gain some speed back and because I thought you had an energy advantage and you would be able to "saddle up". When I saw you also dipping your nose I realized that you hadn't the energy advantage I thought you had and I stayed in the horizontal, at some point it became obvious that I'm going to win the rate-war so I was trying to keep the horizontal turn going - I thought ok that's it I got him - that was obviously a mindset mistake :D. When you made your first reversal in the weeds I was just flying straight at you basically, which is a BFM mistake, but I was afraid I would lose sight of you in the mud. Flying straight at you obviously increased my speed and made the overshoot even more likely, instead of just flying straight at you I could have made a displacement roll f.e. I was misjudging your speed and turnrate pretty hard and a close in overshoot occurred. I thought that I can just enter into rolling scissors, but was completey taken by surprise by your nose authority, and I misjudged your and your jets ability and speed pretty hard. I can remember thinking: man that's not possible, he shouldn't be at my six right now shooting at me :D good job - really enjoyed the fight! The slow speed handling of the Mirage, I would say, isn't actually that bad, because it stalls very gently. Not as abrupt as the the Mig 21 f.e.

I'm an F-1 pilot, and have been taught its strengths by one of its real-world pilots, Commandant Dick Lord, SAAF, in 2001 during a lecture at my University (where I also got to sit in CZ # 207 recently donated to the Engineering School at the time). The F-1 pilot in the engagement was clearly trying to fly it like an F-16, which is an absolute no-no in the CZ, and EE. Tactics of the F-1 are modelled on those of the F-100 Super Sabre, which the Armee de L'Aire had at the time of the F-1's development - i.e. supersonic boom-and-zoom. The F-1 is at its best on the deck, or at high altitude. At no point in the engagement should speed EVER drop below 300, or its curtains for the F-1. Also, F-1's have a HOTAS button for Combat Flap toggle, and operated between 350 and 325 gives a turn rate so hard that it can out-rate an F-5 very easily on the first turn, followed by an afterburner climb to get out of harm's way - a bit like the Viggen, in that way. The F-1's metier is vertical, not horizontal. The F-1 pilot here tried to play the F-5 game, which was exceptionally bad tactically - and on the pass, should have been using cannon rather than fiddling with AIM-9JULI's !

This video idea is really really cool. As someone who still struggle to see the whether I'm winning or losing a rate fight, when to change things up, and stuff like that these kind of commentaries are great. Thanks for the video man

A really interesting format and a great idea to hear from three different observers. Their commentary seemed valid to me, but my only observation would be that there is a lot of ‘what’ is happening and less ‘why’, from a fundamentals point of view. To my mind, you seemed to spend a lot of time in lead, taking lead a little early and holding it too long. I assume this was because you wanted to collapse range. The TC entries vertically seemed well timed, but again too much rate too fast and you bled energy and finished up slow. Less pull would have carried you around the corner at the expense of maybe a slight FP overshoot but nothing uncontrollable. Once in the horizontal, it looked like you were pointing and maybe guilty of a bit of ‘HUD BFM’, rather than being patient, lagging the Bandit and allowing your rate to build. I think this is ultimately why you ended up defensive. Good overshoot control. Easy for me to pick fault from the comfort of my sofa though! An interesting video - looking forward to more and thanks for all your work on the server. ~Tyro

When it comes to trying to scissor with the F-5, be very careful against MiG-21s as some of them are capable of following it. A lot of my kills against F-5s come from them trying to force a scissor and underestimating how much I can pull my own nose around, or how willing I am to spend some ammo on trying my luck.

Well shit this makes me feel old. I remember I think it was the first F-15 pc game when a triangle was considered a "good" representation of an F-15. The first game I got to play was Falcon A.T. aka Falcon 2.0 when my moms co worker set a milk run up for me. Their Finest Hour was the first game I got to spend a lot of time on. It's crazy/ depressing to see the evolution of flight sims. We have games like DCS world where you get so very much.... and so very little all at once.

we need more people flying reviewing teaching and most importantly actually effectivly using the Mirage F1. It is phenominal and out performs nearly everything in the era it is from and still is somewhat effective in the more modern situations. the problem is everyone expects either fox style bvr or close in manuvers/low speed. keep your altitude keep your speed and nothing can touch you. if you are low stay fast and use the diagonal bowl/vertical+horzontal and you can get hit. its sad that everyone only posts the f1 losing.

No need to fear the speeds in excess of 500kts IMO if you have discipline, and know how to use your speed breaks. They are very effective on the F-5 at those speeds. Pull out the power, throw out the boards, and gradually pull back on the stick to ease on the G, and the wings won't snap.

in the f-5 if you lock out the leading edge slats? or LEX? and put the auto flap switch in the forward position meaning flaps up (until you decide its time to cash in the energy for pulling the nose) out you wont burn off nearly as much speed while making those higher g manuvers.

@grifnizzle7197
@grifnizzle7197 Год назад
One thing that confuses me seems to be the contradiction of "don't get slow" but also "nose authority of the F-5 is key advantage". Doesn't nose authority become more of an asset as slow speed? I have like 7 hours total in an F-5 so could be talking out my ass here, but it's been my understanding it can't 'out rate' anything comparable. Is that wrong?
@Enigma89
@Enigma89 Год назад
Speed always allows for more options. IF you can get nose on and fire off a Sidewinder, great. If you can't get your nose on and fire off a sidewinder AND you are slow, then you have very little options. Unloading the jet and letting it breath will give you more options.
@grifnizzle7197
@grifnizzle7197 Год назад
@@Enigma89 so what would you have done differently after that first missle launch? Oh, and thanks for brining this series back, some of my favorite videos of yours, and that's a damn high bar (not to simp for ya TOO hard)
@crazygmanssimstuff
@crazygmanssimstuff Год назад
So if i can sum it up. The F-5 has a pretty mediocre trust to weight ratio, which means that once it gets slow it's hard to get that speed and energy back, and most of your opponents will be able to build it back faster then you can. Managing and conserving your speed and energy is always very important in any fighter but you need to be even more mindful of it in the F-5. The flip side of that is the nose authority of the F-5 is very good, which means you can easily cash in some of your speed and energy to rapidly bring your nose around at a critical moment to set up a shot, or keep your nose on target. However you need to be aware that using too much of this nose authority too often will rapidly drain you of speed and energy, and while it still lets you move your nose around quite a bit at slow speeds you can get yourself into trouble.
@crazygmanssimstuff
@crazygmanssimstuff Год назад
@@grifnizzle7197 I would say that both when he set himself up for that first shot and then at the 4:15 mark he used a lot of nose authorty to bring that nose around. Now threatening your opponent with your nose can be good, it forces them often to react and manuver and bleed speed themselves or risk a missile, However if he eased into both those turns a bit instead of rapidly bringing the nose around he could have carried more speed through it, which would have kept him at a more equal or even a better energy state as the Mirage.
@grifnizzle7197
@grifnizzle7197 Год назад
@@crazygmanssimstuff Thank you for the detailed explanation. I guess where I'm losing the plot a bit is what could have been done differently. My assumption being he was going to lose the rate fight to the Mirage anyway, so getting slow and forcing the overshoot was always going to be the go to move wasn't it? Full disclosure, I flunked out of BFM 101 so my baseline assumptions could be faulty here
@hankyates
@hankyates Год назад
This is such a misleading video that does not represent the ECW experience. On average you would have either gotten 3rd partied by an enemy or a friendly. A dogfight like this can happen on ECW but it's very rare for one to go this long without a furball being created.
@Enigma89
@Enigma89 Год назад
It depends on where you decide to fly. If you fly more to the edges or away from the obvious paths then you can have a more private area to fight in. If you fly where everyone else is flying then you will get third partied and you should fly with that in mind.
@crazygmanssimstuff
@crazygmanssimstuff Год назад
I'm going to disagree with you. It's not that uncommon to get into a decent 5 minute fight as long as your not on the most busy part of the map. I'd say I get into a handful of 2-5 minute fights in a 2-3 hour play session. At least enough that I don't have trouble having content to draw from for compilations
@hankyates
@hankyates Год назад
When you fly at the edges of the map with the F5 how is that helping the objective? Edge ground targets get gobbled up quickly so the more valuable CAP objective-wise is normally in the center.
@hankyates
@hankyates Год назад
Don’t get me wrong you fly the way to want to fly, but given how much of your content is dogfighting, the way ECW is built makes more sense. I think if you tried to accomplish the objective your experience in ECW might change. Try making some content with a frogfoot or warthog that doesn’t involve a2a.
@crazygmanssimstuff
@crazygmanssimstuff Год назад
@@hankyatesHaving flown the Mi-24P a bunch in ECW (have also a couple of videos of that) I can tell you the center targets and ones closest to your friendly airfields and FARPs go first. Later on as the session goes you have to go to the edges to find targets so you are definetly working the objective by providing cap there. Also if it's early, by flying a bit closer to the edges you can draw some enemy cap away from the busy center and help out in that way. One of the problems in server is people just take the shortest and fastest way to get to the enemy, which is why you get the big furballs in the center of the map. This same thing happens on the IL-2 multiplayer servers too like in the finnish server. Lots of players fly straight to the front lines and you get a high saturation of players and furballs ensue. But other players go for objectives that are further behind the lines and you get into more 1 on 1 fights there.

Chuck Yeager's Air Combat! Great shout-out for the old guard! Really good commentary set although a big take away is that there are lots of different ways to approach the fight. Enigma's summary at the end was particularly useful for drawing out the big lessons that 2 or 3 of the mentor-pilots made. Definitely inspiring to fly the F5 more.
