0:19 Translational Lift
4:24 Basic Takeoff
12:54 Basic Landing
This video is a tutorial of Effective Translational Lift (EFT), basic take-offs, and basic landings.
Understanding and mastering the entrance and exit of translational lift is most important during take-offs and landings.
If you can master this, take offs and landings will be a breeze with helicopters in DCS World.

Can I fly this heli using just only my Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick? Do I need advanced joystick like the Thrustmaster Warthog? I have this Mod since Mar 28, 2015 but was not able to master it. Do I need to bind some key to my keyboard so I can fly this helicopter much easier?

This a really great tutorial. Probably the best I've seen so far on this subject. You've managed to present it easy to understand way. It helped me a lot, thank you. And the visual presentation is top notch. It's a pity that you've stopped uploading new videos. Sounds like you had a lot more planned. I hope everything is ok and you're doing fine.

this has made me realize that takeoff and landing both have 2 stages: hover - transitioning to - translational and translational - transitioning to - hover. i see many people especially treating landing as one action, and struggling mightily as a result !

I think it's possible you're conflating the term Translational with Transitional. Your explanation of translational lift seems correct but I want to add that the term Translation refers to something moving in space from place A to place B. Translation and Rotation are the two kinds of motion we deal with in dynamic physics. Otherwise a great video.

It's termed "translational" because you "translate" across the x-axis, as opposed to lifting or rotation. It's not because you transition between vertical and horizontal motion, otherwise it would be termed "transitional." Just a stupid semantic point, not important at all. Otherwise your videos are great!

Just a little search tip that will help remove unhelpful trash DCS "tutorial" content while revealing the truly helpful gems like this video: Step 1: In the RU-vid search bar, type whatever DCS-related topic you want to actually learn about. Step 2: At the end of that thing you typed add the following modifier: -"grim reapers" Note: Don't forget that minus sign! Step 3: Hit Enter and enjoy your search results, free of cynical half-assed clickbait DCS content

Helicopter pilot's in DCS guides always land so smooth and take off so smooth and slow & steady but in war you have to be fast, could you make a tutorial how to do really fast take off and landings? Oh wait, you just said it while I was writing this.. oh well!

Its called ground effect, you are either in it or not. You can be in ground effect, but there is no in-ground effect. Helicopters don't go in-ground. Ground effect is, in simple terms, compressed air between the rotor blades and the ground creating a cushion of air that basically increases to efficiency of the flight surfaces of the heli
@maxdecphoenix

you seriously overcomplicated this explanation with talks of harrier and whatnot. so here: ETL is the relative increase in lift due to velocity. i.e. @0 knots n power is required to maintain altitude. as you being to move, the blades receive higher relative wind speeds, thus produce more lift (by average). This means so long as you maintain/increase momentum, the helicopter will climb without a change to collective. tl:dr when moving, the blades contact the wind at a higher relative speed, thus produce more lift.

Transitional Lift is called Translational Lift?... 02:04 I think the term translation doesnt come from its transition into straight flight but from translating the downward thrust lift into wing lift. Nicely organized quite helpful tutorial..thanks

Of course translational lift is not called that because you transition to it, then it would be called transitional lift. It is called that because you have translational movement, which is the correct term for forward movement or movement where the center of gravity changes location as opposed to rotation. Otherwise great lesson!

based on the rotation of the rotor, is the lift all coming from the right side of the rotor when the chopper is moving forward? The left side of the rotor has the airfoil backwards to the airflow.
@noseyparker8130
@noseyparker8130 5 месяцев назад
At a hover, lift is evenly distributed all around the rotor disk, and so is the pitch angle of the blades. To get moving you first have to create a difference in pitch from one side to the other by moving the cyclic. This moves the center of lift away from the center of the rotor disk, which causes motion. Once in motion relative to the air, then yes, the blade advancing into the air creates more lift while the blade retreating from the air creates less lift. The higher the airspeed, the more the lift shifts to one side of the rotor disk. This is one of the biggest limiting factors to helicopter speed. For a Huey, this means the lift drains from the 9 o'clock position and piles up at the 3 o'clock position. This is called dissymmetry of lift. But because the rotor disk behaves like a gyroscope, the force presents itself 90 degrees later at the 12 o'clock position, causing the nose to pitch up.
