I feel like the S1 finale of True Detective was honestly great as it was. One of the themes it has going for it is the eldritch horror elements from The King in Yellow, and people wrongfully interpret this as like, wanting monsters and a robed cult thrusting wavy daggers at you, but as it stands I think it really compliments these themes to have the actual cult be this unreachable force of unknown size and irreparably damage those who happen upon it, some even to the point of catatonia. And the horror was that Childress was the only one within their reach through semi-legal means, who was not able to hide through wealth and privilege.

Totally agree! I really like season one, and I really don't mind the way it ended. I'm sure a good series could be made about the rest of the 'sprawl' during or before S1, but it doesn't need it.

No, they had one mad hillbilly as a villain already, and then the ultimate cult leader was another mad hillbilly - like this guy is running a secret society for elite rich aholes? I don't buy it, but i might accept it if not from a narrative point this repeat is just dumb, apparently originally they planned the case will never be solved -that would frankly have been better but someone got cold feet and thought the audience had to be pandered to.

am i wrong about season 1? wasnt these some supernatural shit to it? what Rust sees in the last episode in the context of all the King in Yellow stuff had me believing that a worm hole leading to Carcosa had appeared before him, meaning the bad guy wasnt some nutjob, all that crap he believed was true

As someone who lived and worked in Alaska (Fairbanks) and northern Canada (Uranium City/Athabasca and, Yellowknife/GSL) as a field biologist, I gotta say that Night Country totally lacks a sense of place. Season 1 did a great job with it's setting: it was unambiguously back- ountry Louisiana. Night country doesn't even feel cold. And the indigenous angle is handled so poorly... I can see a really great series set around the drug trade/human trafficking/mining/colonialism/Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women/Metropolitan indifference/rich assholes... You make your true detectives interesting characters: a school teacher who saw something and can't let it go, an RCMP officer who gets transferred to Newfoundland for asking questions... an FBI agent who doesn't see the point in any of it but can't get off the case... whatever... give me a week and five grand and i'll write you a pilot. I forget what my point was... oh yeah... what a stupid show.. and the dialogue: "If they drill too fast it will destabilize the immortality microorganism's genome"... wtf? That is Star Trek level meaningless techno-gobbledygook. And Rust's dad.... and the Tuttle Corporation.... Discount Log Lady... it's laughable. The worst thing though was being told how good it was and how you were sexist if you didn't like it... I tell ya, if people were sent to jail or maimed (or something) for failing to adequately entertain me, we'd have a lot less shit TV. You know what show knew its place? The Nanny... and who knew Fran Drescher would turn out to be such a god damn firebrand... there is a feminist icon for you. ... and what a waste of Christopher Eccleston. Watching him fumble around with his pants and belt for $10,000 an hour is just embarrassing. If I was showrunning this thing and was told to cast some famous asshole for a stupid amount of money, you know who I'd choose? Yep: Werner Herzog... tell me you don't want to see him frozen in ice, waxing lyrical about the silence and what it takes from you while you sleep. anyway, I need to get to work. Thanks for reading this far, you fkn weirdo.

There's loads of S1 shows where the idea is fantastic, really well executed, but also essentially is done and wrapped up (even with ambiguous endings or hints at a bigger world) and it's so hard to carry on the level to another series where you don't have the advantage of the world building as people have already experienced it - Twin Peaks, Westword, True Detective etc. Severance was great and the writers won't suddenly turn bad, but I don't see how it can deliver more than S1 in the 2nd series.

That is scary hearing your reminiscing about the Royal Mail I'm wondering if we did it was the same time, circa 1998/1999. I was a postman in the summer as my summer job between terms at university and remember there being a strike on at the one time. It worked out really well for me as there was no post coming down from the depots so ended up 'Walk-Sorting' only a handful of letters which took an hour to deliver and still got paid but clocked off early. Then when it all came through the system for the overtime for the tonnes of extra hours it took to catch up. The depot I was at were great because they didn't have a problem with me working while they were on strike. I really had a problem with the idea of crossing a picket line given my background and principles but they were absolutely cool about it as I was only a summer temp. I definitely remember the same training that you refer to. Think I got three days of going out and being taught how to walk-sort and peck your bags before deliver at like half five in the morning. Was still in the pub by the time they were opening at midday. 😊

Totally agree about True Detective. Night Country has been an utter disappointment, and doesn't deserve to bear the True Detective name. TD is not about supernatural stuff and shouldn't have some completely unrelated and irreconcilable narrative shoehorned into its canon. Personally I consider the first season to be the best 8 hours of television ever produced. I don't think we're ever going to see a dynamic like Rust and Marty ever reproduced as well as TD did it. Season 3 almost came close. You guys should definitely give it a watch. It had brilliant casting and acting, and was really freaking good for about 90 percent of it. Unfortunately the narrative falls apart in the end because the last act is handled very lazily and is very rushed. But it's still worth watching. It's miles better than seasons 2 and 4. I am more critical of season 2 than you guys though. I thought it was irredeemable and some of the most terrible writing and dialogue I've ever witnessed. I really love the parody video someone made of it though, "Ray and Frank's Bogus Journey". You guys should look that up.

I guess everyone has had a shit experience of work. - either the work, the people (the group dynamics) or the policies. I once worked for a bit clothes retailer. Same thing as mentioned. Big signs saying you can't join a union. Lots of young people working shifts paid by the hour but then staying beyond their shift was they need to remove stock from a trolly, basically working for free (but you don't earn a salary?) and then to top it off they sent Christmas cards which were red versions of their green payslips, printed on a dot matrix printer. I also did some brief work for a big South Korean company who were, as part of the clothes division, buying them from a high class retailer, taking them apart and then sending them to the far east to be recreated and then badged for a UK department store.

I'm pretty sure the actors are legitimately indigenous, if they casted blacks as indigenous they'd be canceled. Indigenous people probably just have a greater diversity of skin tones than you'd think. You also have a ton of indigenous people who are half-white, probably half-other-things too.

You know, after watching a dozen or so of these pods, I don't know if Christina really is as she pretends/behaves (completely disinterested into the pod AND her husband for that matter, and has a "this is bull$hit, this and YOU George, are waste of my time..." tone) or it's somekind of overcompensation/cope people sometimes do when they are on camera/in front of people speaking, a faux-semi-sophisticated "I don't care...bleh..." way of dealing with performance anxiety. I am not sure if they go to seperate rooms, counties, townships, what-have-you, after the pod is over and don't speak to each other until the next pod, or they have furious sex sessions and are deeply in love and have a functional marriage.

The interview was surreal and nothing like 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸, unfortunately. Yeah, it's for Americans, since Twitter is blocked in Russia, which is something that an actual journalist might have mentioned. It also connects with what Lavrov has said about Tucker Carlson before and the America First isolationism, which is how Putin hopes to win in Ukraine and elsewhere eventually.
