beautiful beginning of something bigger than all of us
@stickjackal4867

It is a beautiful thing to see how far John has come in the last 4-5 years and has blossomed into the effortless cosmic conduit of something bigger than just 6 guys on stage. He has found that magical cable that connects directly to the devine cosmic demensions that Jerry was so familiar. Most of all he is NOT trying to be Jerry or even mimic him, he is honoring the music with his own interpretation and style while still being true to the origin and intent of the music. The boys are truly celebrating the institution that is the Grateful Dead and must say John is now undoubtedly a member of the Tribe. On NewYears of that year, 2015-2016, John had his “wings” pin on full display, and am assuming Bobby or one of the Boys pinned him that night because at the end of the show he addressed the crowd with tons of emotion to thank all the Deadheads for accepting him into their family. I’m sure that was a very special moment for John. I remember when I got my first set of wings as I’m sure many of u do. As cheesy as it can seem at times, it really does make one feel good to receive the approval of ones peers. Keep it up John. Keep proving all the haters wrong and keep pushing the envelope as Jerry would want. He is up there smiling from ear to ear.

A beautiful heartfelt comment that finely sings the praises of John Mayer's transition into the Dead, as a true rite of passage, and an occasion to which he has aptly risen❣❣❣

Agree. I was at this show. First show ever as Dead & Co. Imagine the catalog of songs John had to learn! Every night is a different set list, so John had to learn a ton of music. Not to mention he is playing in front of an audience that is unlike the average fan/audience. My understanding is that John lived in an RV behind Bobby's studio for weeks to learn the music. I thought it was a nice gesture that the first song was Playing In The Band.

John Mayer is the joint! In 2022 it’s easy to see that he is one of the giving-est team player musicians ever. His camaraderie is legendary to observe here with the Dead. He pours out a lot of love and receives a lot of love in return. It really messes with your heart. I love him madly🔥❤️🔥

It's so interesting looking back on this from 2021 to hear how Mayer's tone and playing with the Dead have evolved. Here, his tone and style are both pretty aggressive and rock-oriented - lot's of overdrive, some high flying stuff on the board. Yet, by the time of the present, his tone is much cleaner and Jerry-ish, and his playing much more mellow and melodic. I think that early on he was trying to impress and make it clear that he was not some pretty boy who couldn't hold his own. Now, that role is his and he owns it. He's not Jerry, but he was never asked to be.
@kevinborchers3522
@kevinborchers3522 2 года назад
Agree with you completely. John has even said in interviews that he is more relaxed now and that during early tours he was trying to go off with a big solo every song. Now he knows ppl respect him and he can lay back and pick his moments more.

Don't think overdrive as such, maybe a tad too much on a boost pedal?

This was the first ever D&Co. show and the first time I ever took Ketamine! The first set was so soothing and interesting, kept you hangin on, waiting for the next note... loved how they made us sing "snow and rain" early. At intermission, a man was wandering around the concourse saying "ketamine...... ketamine...... ketamine......" only audible to those looking for it. I said "how much?" and he looked back at me, intensely and holds out his hand and says "hhhhhere, here, just take it" and I grabbed the bag, went to the bathrooms downstairs and asked a dude who looked in the know "hey man, what's this look like to you?" And he said "well, looks like K, what were you told it was?" I said "ketamine." He says "looks like about half a gram of some pretty clean K to me, brother" and I went in the bathroom stall with it after thanking him. I didnt know you were supposed to do K in bumps and ride a magical plateau. I laid it out on the toilet paper holder, railed it all up my nose at once, and then left the bathroom. As I'm walking up the stairs, the whole world falls out from under me and all noises become a steady and slow "womp womp womp" of people talking and what not. I find my girlfriend, tell her I need to sit down, I can barely see anything in front of me, she took me to a seat along those hockey walls that were still up. Before the lights go down, I feel the "womp womp womp" intensify and become brighter, people's conversations become audible and discernible. I stand up and become extremely excited. The lights go down, I grab my girlfriends hand, we rush forward, hopping two or three gates to get to the very front section I think. Band takes the stage, and my favorite song pairing of all time, Sailor>Saint begins. My vision is restored to this silvery, mirrored ball with the opposite of what is real underneath and a shiny, sparkly, colorful, gooey version of reality on top. Sailor>Saint begins... it was a religious experience the rest of the way to say the least. What a fantastic first show for a band.

It will go down in history as one of the most strange and unlikely developments that somehow “your body is a wonderland “ Mayer is playing and accepted by dead heads. I know he’s a good guitarist but it’s almost like Karen Carpenter joining The Rolling Stones. Do you any of the dead want to call up wonderland in the set. LOL. Really amazing after his Jessica Simpson and Katy Perry days he could pull that off. Maybe the audience is so wrapped up in trying to emulate the real thing they don’t know the difference. Is this a result of radical acceptance or ignorance? Or a mix?
