John Mayer deserves a late night show where he interviews guests and has impromptu jams with musical guests. I'm even down to portray the role of Ed McMahon in order for this to come to fruition. There's a Guitar World article from 2007 where he revealed he wrote pop tunes in order to make $ so he could eventually just play the blues which is what he really wanted. He def made that happen. The headline was something like "John Mayer: King of pop or king of the blues?"
Hey, he's both pop and jam-blues. His last album in 2018 was fabulous and all pop. This old Dead Head loved it. I just want to see Dead and Co make 15 minute tunes out of a few.. :)

I think John Mayer is the guitarist we'd all like to be. He's talented beyond human comprehension. He doesn't take himself too seriously. He's generous with his time and talent. He seems honestly to be interested in helping less gifted musicians along. What a combination of traits!!!

Stich wouldn't say to change scale you think about with every chord change, he would say to stay in the tonal centre and play the extra notes characterizing every chord and you basically have the same result with less mind work. This also works because Garcia didn't always always followed the chord changes, sometimes he created tensions by playing scale noodling over X chord completely ignoring to underline major thirds or 7\b7
We're incredibly lucky to have a musician of this caliber showing us how he practices and showing us tips and tricks. Guitar players of past decades would have loved this

This was really cool for me. I loved the dead. Jerry has always touched me, but I am no musician. I can't tell F sharp from a hole in the wall. Still so interesting to see how the mind of an artist works. My favorite part is how humble John is (just like Jerry was). So much pressure on him to live up to a guitar legend.

its cool to see John "get" how Jerry touched us all as he goes with this. Even though we can't all play like this and understand the music theory of it, we all get how different and amazing and heart-felt Jerry's playing was. John is amazing and it's soo cool to watch him practice!
John , thank you for loving the Dead Music and keeping the music alive with Bob . I am 68 yrs old and liked you , but the respect I have for you and the love you have for Hunters writing and Garcia's lead work is fantastic and giving younger folks a chance to get some of the wonderful music the Dead was about , it is alot deeper then folks know and the mix of Cosmic Country vibe with great possitive lyrics this band was trying to put out to the world and folks that followed them a strange but loving community , that some how worked out . Love ya for you're effect to keep , like Uncle NEIL says , keeping the hippie dream alive.

I loved watching this. Seeing him put his thought and time into these songs. The contrast to seeing him on stage with eyes closed seemingly not even thinking about it, bit letting the spirit of Jerry and the music just take him on a journey. No thought, just magical playing
I appreciate how willing and eager he is to go adventuring and occasionally getting lost and the whole thing blowing up. I think Jerry did the same thing pretty often. When Trey played that first DEAD show in Chicago, he went adventuring very early in the first set ,blew up, and never went adventuring again. John goes looping out into space, comes back, and then goes off elsewhere... Maybe more in the earlier years. Can't say... I have a hard time with Bobby's tempos.

Infinite fretboard possibilities via a the medium and approach of the Grateful Dead and Garcia !! Awesome share, John !! Great insights. Jerry talked about also letting go of form awareness and focusing also on intervals. So ... no matter where you are on the frettboard, you're only even a whole step or a half step from being " in key" ... thus a simple bend or slide up/ down can turn a " mistake " into a cool musical statement.

That explanation was the most informative guitar video I may have ever watched. The non chordal segment of sugaree was amazing. And the keeping of the b to e chord changes in your head helps a lot
I feel like John Mayer was born with the guitar embedded in his soul. He can play anything and you can totally tell that he feels every note, it's really incredible to watch him! I've seen almost 150 dead shows and with his musical talent, there's not another human alive that could have filled that role better than he did! Thank you very much John Mayer ❤️☮️☮️
I would like to add john that seeing my first show in 1985 and many many shows there after and seeing jerry play as if it was a walk in the park for him and you my freind after seeing you play with dead and company 2 dozen or more times just leave me in awwwh how so so talented you are my freind always puts a smile on my face to see and hear the music i so much love for so many years i just want to say thank you and i never feel disapointed after a show keep it up john you truly are a masterpiece!

Of any instructional material for guitar on any platform, I find these videos in this format to be the most inspiring. I get frustrated with myself when practicing and trying to learn to do just the kinds of things John is talking about here, and often think I’ll never get there because I don’t have the musical training and perfect feel of someone like John. But to see that he loses it sometimes, even with all of his education and practice and talent, gives me a glimmer of hope that I can get there one day. Edit: re-reading that, it can sound somewhat disrespectful of John. Just want to make it clear that I have immense respect for this guy as a musician, and he seems to be a really great person as well. Not every guitar “god” will demystify themselves by presenting to the world when they’re vulnerable and can make mistakes (like during practice time). It’s very refreshing and speaks volumes about the kinda person he is. It’s all about the music with him. No ego.
I know what you mean. It wasn't until You Tube came along that I can now see masters like John Mayer, Robbie Krieger and even Al Di Meola, play or instruct and make a small mistake and go "oops". It reassured me that it is the nature of music and to go with it. I finally learned that you always walk a fine line when you're playing no matter what level you are at. It's just that when you are on stage, the mistake passes by so quick that no one hears it or cares. Plus when on stage you are more on your game so mistakes get corrected by a note bend or slide. Or sometimes the mistake sounds better than what you intended to play. I've seen videos of myself make a mistake and upon watching the video, the mistake was better than what I intended to play.

Great instructions, I love the personality and determination and teach others your gift.❤ My father was a fluent guitar player what passed away in the 90s I only wish you could have seen you play. As you know everyone has their own style and it definitely is an art. Like you said anyone can play guitar and learn the instruction but the music 🎵 that you create is your own individual touch.

I’ve actually been all deep in improvising for the last year or so- and all roads with improv eventually lead to Jerry. The bit you said about one string really struck a chord with me no put intended. Sugaree is a good example of this. Learning to play the sugaree vocal melody on guitar basically changed everything for me. i started to see all the places that the triads come in and their barre chords. It helped me unlock the fretboard past just major vs minor. Thanks JM. JG became my biggest guitar hero once I started improvising, and I gotta say- he would look down on you and smile. He would be touched that you threw in some chromatics as a shout out to him, I think he’d be touched to hear your more blues based kind of takes on his melodies. He was first and foremost a musician- and anybody who understands music would have to smile at your take on the dead library. Not only that but to see how you’ve grown as a player over the time on the road with them. You’ll never read this but as a Jerry fan I just wanted to say thanks bro for the tips and I’m gonna learn a lot more from analyzing your take on jerry. When you talk about how you hear music on your head it makes me feel sane. Same goes for the “holding a guitar making you feel better cuz you could play it at any time” type thing. I think great players and people who have that potential to be a great player and have their own voice on guitar tend to be pretty crazy adhd or whatever the way we hear and obsess over music. When you talk about all those years of playing guitar in your bedroom just working on your chops for when you get to play music with somebody else- that is so me rn. Except I did my dead improv phase before even playing with anyone. But dude- whenever somebody says something bad about you- remember the dead and co stuff. Once you’ve played this music you’ve eternally improved peoples lives. This music for whatever reason changes peoples lives. For me that first song was Althea.
Been studying Jerry for 30 years and obviously been keeping an eye on John's contribution (well done by the way). This is a great honest glimpse into how fun and challenging this is even for the most seasoned player. 24 min to the end is my favorite to hear him speak openly about this experience as it relates to guitar. 'when you get confused listen to the music play!" *cue best solo ever* postscript: I would love to hear JM play JGB "get out my life woman" which is still today Jerry's best guitar work!!!

As someone just getting started learning guitar this is literally magic! He makes it look so effortless while I’m in pain trying to form a barre chord or a normal chord for that matter!😂❤
A jazz player named Ben Monder has a foundation of learning the arpeggios for chords all over the neck. I learned to shape solos around chord tones by first using these arpeggios, and I hear a lot of that in John's playing. When I started thinking more in terms of "can I hear the chord changes in my solo" vs. thinking in terms of scales, I quickly progressed. Now I can add color using scales, yet it's all centered around the chords. Still learning, still practicing, and trying to learn from cool cats like John :)
Pretty basic foundation for jazz, to know all the arpeggios in all locations on the neck (and so be able to play anything, no matter where you are on the neck, within a 5 fret span)
