I feel bad for people who are hypercritical and negative about this. They should do this. They shouldn't do that. They shouldn't even be playing. They look funny. What I like to do is just take it as it comes into my ears and let it speak to me in the moment. This music still speaks to me. Was it better with Jerry? Yes sure, but I saw Jerry plenty of times and he couldn't muster a quarter of this energy. This is no nostalgia act; these guys rock! The Hart/Kreutzman/Weir rhythm section is beyond solid. You have to see this in person. It is an enormous spectacle like no other. And the songs... the Grateful Dead song catalog is beyond anyone's IMO. I enjoyed this very much. I saw them both nights in Boulder last year and have tix for both nights there this year. Bill Graham had a saying, "These guys aren't just the best at what they do; they're the only ones who do what they do." It's worth still doing.
Steve Goodman When Jerry was as young as Mayer is here, he could muster far more energy than John does at these shows. I mildly enjoy these shows and have no serious criticisms, but to me they are listless compared to Dead shows.
The older I get, the more grateful I am every day that I can enjoy this music in any way, shape or form that it is presented. 45+ years ago, I never even imagined that I could, with a click of a button enjoy the music that fills my heart with so much happiness anytime or anyplace and pick any time in the history of this bands extraordinary legacy and listen or view that time. My heart saddens when I read negativity from people about the recent or current configuration/tour of what is now 'The Dead'. You either have it or you don't, and these poor souls who attempt to pollute the happiness of so many of us simply do not have it.
@Airborne Poet OP was talking about people hating on the members of the band. Very different than acknowledging some shows are better than others. The whole segment of deadheads who hate d&c and mayer. Theyre the problem.
I saw the Dead when Jerry was skinny and when he was the great pumpkin at Halloween. The Grateful Dead is never coming back....but Dead & Co are making me smile, smile, smile!
I just had one of my best naps with this going. Thank you Dead for the memories. It was a pleasure to have met you many times. You will never be forgotten.
Sometimes reading all these comments, makes me think i must have gone to shows for the wrong reason. Yeah, sometimes the boys were steaming, and sometimes not. But i never cared if Jerry lost his place, or Bobby forgot a few words, or if Phil sang too much...cuz I was out there dancing my ass off, laughing my head off, just always grateful to be there. My only complaint about D&C is that I wish they would pick up the tempo to make better to dance to. 68 and still shaking these old bones
I'll admit I thought Mayer was totally wrong for the Dead. Well, I'm glad to admit that I was very wrong. He's the perfect man for the job, and I'm convinced that playing this music is good for his soul.
You know I just ate my words about Mayer, too. I thought he was a total douche, but watching him actually play, wow OK he fits! I was wrong! I apologize to the universe. Who knew. You don't really know a man...
Nah, he doesn't fit the part. He may be doing better than others could, but it's nowhere near the same. I can't stand hearing non Jerry like riffs changing the music.... I am not into it at all, nothing like the old days...
There is no doubting Jerry was one of a kind. There is no doubt JM is too. Why not celebrate the continuation of excellence and joy? I'm a Dead Head. I love D&C. Rock on.
I paid to see this concert on nugs for about 35 bucks in hd was off the charts, and thought it was worth every penny. Now having the ability to see it again like this is amazing. I'm Grateful
I CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF THIS. I AM OLD SCHOOL I WAS ON TOUR IN THE EARLY 80'S. I AM ON MY BENDED KNEES. BABY READ BETEWEEN THE LINES. IT'S NOT MUSIC IT'S A WAY OF LIFE.
There's this interview with David Crosby where he's explaining he doesn't think he's good enough of a musician to play with Grateful Dead. So nothing but respect for Mayer who taught himself to play the entire GD catalogue in all it's complexity and who's playing it well. Much gratitude for keeping this music alive. Looking forward to the show in August.
Recent Grateful Dead fan here! I wasn't lucky enough to be born while Jerry was still here, and the dead were in their prime but I can live vicariously through their recordings and also shows like this. Thank you John, Bob and all for keeping the music alive for people like me! :)
@@jocosaway8494 I was c. 1958... so really I came late to their party too.. only heard GD once in 73, once in 95... but shocked to realize... it's still going!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But just a little advice...catch while ya can! Always try to remember the question posed to the Long Distance Runner. Im still trying... anyway, best of luck young Way.... youre going to have a better life than many.. most, and tunes are great advantage, sublime luxury... just remember to take care of yourself, everyone else included...
Fans look at Jerry through rose colored glasses. When he was on he was really good. He just wasn't always on. Especially in the early 90's when I saw him. I saw him at Cardinal Stadium in Louisville, summer of 90. He was OK but not stellar. The sets were pretty good. The opening act was Bruce Hornsby and he was great. Brent, The keyboard player died shortly after that show (speedball OD) and Bruce filled in the next tour.
This performance is a master class in how to jam in an unusual time signature. I love the way they all pick it up from Weir at 15:10. The Main Ten lives!
What a thoroughly delicious treat. Been on Jerry Duty since my 1st Dead show in'68. There is some exquisite music being played here. Thanks sooooo much for sharing this. Keep it up, fellas.
Loving the mixed energy between the mature percussion, the precision keyboards by Jeff and the superior vocals by all. Bobby is better than ever as the music director and Mayer is staying true to the music without being a parrot. Oteil's bass is as melodic as you can get. I've listened to the Dead since 1970 and this is one of the best sustaining renditions of this Hunter/Barlow song. I hope they carry on.
Lmao why are people even worrying about Mayer and Jerry this is Dead and Company not grateful dead. Btw Bobby sounds incredible here. Hope they keep touring for a few more years
It got special after Bobby had that awful experience at Muerte con queso and had to be taken off stage. Once he got sober , he had a vision and executed and we are so lucky to have this amazing music back in our lives. For the first time in 20 years has it become magical again where every show may be better than the last. What a gift we were given.
Its High Time you keep your Day Job cuz its Hard To Handle that Big Boss Man Gunther S. Stompton! He'll put a Slip Knot around all your Crazy Fingers so he can get with your girl Rosemary. In 9 months she's gonna Bertha out little Kattie Mae outta her Box of Pain. At that moment you'll know the meaning of being a Friend of the Devil cuz he'll say we had a DEAL....you wanted a baby girl! You'll say I Need a Miracle and he'll tell you Mr. Charlie, Death Don't have no Mercy!
I still have the first album which I bought in 1967. Their first 7 or 8 albums were on my turntable constantly. Then I thought they lost their way for a decade or two and I drifted away. . Finally I came to realize it was ME who lost his way, and I'm back in the fold. I still recall the shock that reverberated throughout hippiedom when they released Workingman's Dead and American Beauty, which were folky and "country". That still ranks as the most revolutionary reinvention any band has ever pulled off. Whether folky and acoustic or deep into psychedelia, The GD took us all on an epic journey. This latest reinvention is within the spirit of that joyful evolution. Long live Jerry, Pigpen, and Robert Hunter and all the dead Dead.. These guys keep the Dead alive without being a mere "tribute" band. So cool.
Along with "Mars Hotel" and "Europe '72," you've just mentioned two of my favorite albums as I only caught them live in the 70's (Woodstock doesn't count as the equipment and weather (and Drugs) ruined their performance.)
Too all those who find the tempo too slooowww. May I kindly suggest listening in the moment instead of anticipating something that isn't coming. This music is just exactly perfect for the moment it was being played. Furthermore, this music makes me feel good like it always has. Long live the music!
I was there and it was amazing. Dancing on the beach and in the ocean and paying tribute to Barlow with an amazing looks like rain with shared tears. D&C were really coming into themselves and only just a few weeks earlier did it all just click and become special. This was the first Playin in the Sand and have gone to everyone and won’t miss it ever. It is everything you could ask for in the present day.
I went to the first show in Albany and one each summer since - these shows are just so laid back and fun. If you cannot enjoy this set up I do not know what you need. Peace All.
When I listen to the old stuff, it takes me back to youthful joyful times. When I listen to new stuff, it reminds me of older youthful joyful times, and twenty years from now, GOD willing, I will be listening to whoever is playing this material the most joyfully. with gladness. My memories are keyed to music, and Dead music are the keys to many happy times, and CSNY the keys to others...
I love love love this show. This was the Barlow show and the LLR was just that special and also they had technical difficulties and so nugs fans did not get it live like I did in Mexico. After seeing it live on the beach , I ran back to my room and rewatched the same show again. I had to leave in the middle of Casey Jones sine it was the fastest I’d ever heard and I thought my heart was going to explode. The visuals were one of a kind back then and it was the best D&C show I watched and heard at the time and I hadn’t missed one since Nov 2017 and pre appendix tour. What a great moment in dead and co history. Meant the world to me at the time and re listening brings me back.
So boss. I feel so lucky to see them before Jerry passed but the boys are still keeping the van between the ditches and that is super impressive. Great set. I hope they keep doing it forever.
I love the Dead they have made me hapy since 1969 and their music echoes through out my life...a 'band beyond description'. I am so glad this latest iteration continues and I am here to hear ...
Absolutely loving the D&C's down tempo vibe, and the fresh harmonies, dynamics, and voicings to the numbers with which our ears are so deeply familiar. Great new life!
Yeah I agree.people bitched about the tempo for 10 years.its supposed to be a chill vibe, feel good music.not speed metal.lol.i don’t get it.peeps have to be negative about everything I guess
for the deadheads that have let Mayer into the dead..... good for us he truly has stepped up and has given us a chance to have more of this music our souls need, he is not Jerry but he is on that level. With out mayer i dont think we would have these tours we love and dam they are amazing a most times THANKS JOHN MAYER FOR ALL THE SHOWS YOU HELP MAKE POSSIBLE
Dead in Mansfield Ma. Tonight!!! Hey Now!!! This will be my first time seeing the current lineup, my last Dead related show other than D.S.O. was Furthur which I loved and thought they got better every show...... I'm looking forward to tonight.
Definitely awesome shows. One of a kind experience for sure, being able to swim in the ocean and watch the show, just crazy. Plus all inclusive meant lots of good food in the venue, waiters carrying you drinks even up to the front of the crowd, though you had to go to the beer tent for craft brews (still no $$).. Barefoot on the beach is the way to go! Its good to have friends who know people :D Thanks Jeff!!!!
I avoid the commentary here, but so glad I stumbled across this show.... gotta warn ya, if you have a little (9hrs) brain surgery.. you'll come out a little different,,, like anything else i guess, (like 25 y ago, my first dose of vitamin a, flipped w/ vitaman e, 4example), but realize listening to music can be a little hard, uncomfortable sometimes... but in a good way, and I have to say, listening to whats left, of the Dead, those still alive, and to see and hear who Mayer has become... helps make me (even with what feels like an ice pick stuck into my left temple, in the center of a titanium mesh patch, covering where a tumour (size of baseball) was extracted) still really like being alive..
Two years without a comment on this awesome show...sheesh...i will make one...what a damn good show...and the drums/space were in particular a stand out with Jeff John and Mickey all on the key boards together at the same time. Some DNC shows are only so so , but this one is definitely remarkable.
Playing in the Sand was always one of my favorite Dead songs. Not as much as Tennessee Ned or St Stephanie but definitely up there with Scarlet Petunias and Cousin Bob's Hand.
Cousin Bob's Hand reminds me of a very, "touchy/feely" - type cousin of mine who never could appreciate another's personal space. Stupid Cousin Bob....
I would have never guessed that John Mayer would be Dead before I heard him play. Dead and Company does capture the authenticity of the Dead experience. I am Grateful to be able to hear them play. It brings me back and comforts my soul
I remember seeing the dead 7th row for Bobby's 38 birthday at the meadowlands. Jerry made Bob sing almost every song for the 2nd set. I thought those days were over but man you can see their having fun and the music shows it
We all know the original members of the Dead are AMAZING and John Mayer rocks, great fit but, I want to give a shout out to the Oteil on bass, so damn good. You sir, you are the glue!!!!!
@@irecordmyselfpractice7346 the lame comparisons Jerry vs Johnny are trivial and trite . How lucky are we to have excitement around the music we loved for so long again? It was magical and was gone for 20 years and the magic and spirit has come back and it’s fun, tight, and spiritual again. You never know if the next show will be better than the last. If you want to live on the past , that’s on you, but rippin on Johnny when he’s in the hardest shoes to fill with the biggest music critics , he’s grown and is filling those shoes through hard work and humility. As in Terrapin... “His job is to shed light And not to master” I prefer to enjoy the light and we are lucky to have it now and who knows how long it will last. So cherish every second of it.
Johnny wasn’t challenged with any other music until he had this opportunity. You have to play the band , not the notes and music. And bobby loves throwing a left handed monkey wrench in the mix all the time. I did not like Mayer at first but when Bobby got sober after muerte con queso, the magic happened and gets stronger every show. Mayer deserves accolades for working as hard as he did and respecting the music and fans. What an amazing gift we have right now. Hoping PITs4 will happen.
Sitting up here listening to RU-vid then Your Love video came on what blew me away was this song " nothing going to take me back" I do Street Ministry and wait for I get to talk to people about being homeless using drugs or anything else that will stop them doing great things thank you very much you never know where a blessing will come from and you did a great job🎉🤗🫡👍👏🙏
But are you a Dead Fan?? They played some stuff Really Slow. I'm a fan of their very first recordings. I was never a dead head. Faster tempo is perfect for JM.
He’s Gone sounds great ! Wish they would play a few more at the Dead’s original tempo because my feet want to move a little faster but that’s just me being selfish. Rock on boys!
Hello! Great band, I was so young listening to the Dead back in the day and having a great time hearing the Music live and the reefer was just flowing and I got blinded with all those Tie dye Shirts----Hello!
I will be going to see Dead And Company at Lockn later this year and I just found out that Branford Marcellus will be playing with Dead And Company at Lockn
I am not a fan at all of the dead, but I am a music fan. I was pleasantly surprised by Mayers playing...I he definitely changed his style to fit into this almost 1/2 step behind freeflowing extension never-ending jam. His guitar solos are without question great, I was more amazed by the rhythm. It's quite unusual
Sometimes I try to pretend JM is someone else...but the guy's doing a great job!...he grows on you, when he surrenders his ego to the vibration of the music~the band~the crowd~Jerry's spirit...and he is doing that more and more and I kind of like him now, he's alright...you can just feel the vibe of the ocean and all those bare feet ~sounds delightful! O yeh, thanks for sharing this ~THAT's so DEAD that's so COOL!
Forest BirdGirl I hear ya. His tone has gotten there, better than a couple years ago for sure. Even tho he looks like Ben Shapiro's much cooler and chill younger brother sometimes. It was an issue in my head one night. And this show, Billy and Mickey actually look like they're enjoying themselves.
Cheap Thrill I'm glad we're sharing the same wavelength...Bobby too is looking and playing great ~so much energy!! xo (I think Ben Shapiro is 34 and John is 41) John really does look like Ben, and John also looks and seems a lot younger as well...age is so relative...

The only thing I'd heard from them was Box of Rain and I click on this video--- WOW THESE GUYS ARE AMAZING. OH WOW. WOW. JUST NASTY!! I am so grateful, thank you universe. WOW
I was there on the sand and I almost had a heart attack during that Casey Jones. You’re right , it was so fast and so fricken cool. The background video to it was way cool as well and unlike others I’ve seen. It was a special moment and one ingrained in my mind forever.
I haven't really heard them with John until now. They sound great. Slow tempos, but sounds authentic. JM has done his homework and is probably having the time of his life. Good for Bobby, Billy, and Mickey for keeping it going. \m/
JM gets much too much criticism. Probably because he hails from Connecticut as do many of us but the Northeast has delivered excellent musicians over the years. John's acoustic playing & songcraft is high class & difficult to learn, let alone play well. He's done his woodshedding & belongs on stage anywhere.
