Sometimes I see a video like this and it just makes me sit back and appreciate the technology we have today. The video and audio quality on this are really incredible.
This is the best live Stranger I’ve ever heard the Dead play. I’ve been seeing the Dead since the 80’s and listening to them since the late 60’s. Mayer was tapped into the secrets of the universe and was definitely channeling Jerry. His guitar playing has energized the old boys in the Dead and with the improv jammy nature of the band, he has grown exponentially in creativity and his technical skills are coming on par with Jerry.
Wow - I have listened to this probably 15 times while working out, John just ripping, love it so much, he is just floating around on another planet, So amazing!
You hear this and think about interviews about Dead music by the Dead and here’s John, young, energetic, with the clearest sound sincerely chasing the spirit of Jerry and then that moment when you get that flash of awareness, it’s the Rhythm Devils themselves driving the entire thing, what Jerry said you know!
Was there for this one. Man what a fabulous show! High times. There was lots of promise & excitement in 2016, the first summer tour for DeadCo and before the world went to shit.⚡️
@jeff b. Thanks for the archive link. It illustrates perfectly how I see and feel about both Jer' and the youngin'. Jerry plays the pocket inside the groove. Leading but listening effortless and endless ideas. Jon does as well but he is outside more often, searching and adventurous. I think he's still a little out of synch at moments. Or maybe I am and need to re calibrate. I respect his talent and when he's feeling it, holy shite he's a force. The chemistry and earnestness are there but nothing replaces the years on the road and a lifetime of playing together. Go John, definitely enjoying the ride.
I read a review a hundred years ago that said something like, Jerry seems like he's gonna miss the note, but he just barely makes it. Always. And it's perfect. Your comment reminded me of that.
Damn Straight ole towne get down, Gorge for two nights this year! First time for a weekend go ar an amazing place ... on site camping provides the whole other part of it I love. Hearing the drum circle in the not too distance 24/7 always reminds me I am home. F'n Awesome smokin version of this song right here guys! Lotsa Loves from us :)
just circled back and listened to this again. The mix is great. Oteil is very prominent in the mix. See you all in Hartford in 3 days! And thank you keeping the bus on the road. This show was right around the time I saw D&C for the first time on night 1 in Fenway.
I was at this show & the Gorge. Listening to that Fenway show is what convinced me I needed to get back on the bus. Some 45 shows & 8 yrs later the bus has been put to pasture. What a fantastic run!
This is one of my fav versions of this song. John is channeling Jerry and nails it. I keep coming back to this one. Phenomenal jams that intertwine. They are really on point on this one! For all of this JM naysayers, give this a listen….
First of all, thanks for uploading.I enjoyed some of this, but I expected this to take off and it never really did. The jam certainly was set up to do that. This is what separated Jerry from the rest.He was the pilot.
I see what you mean. John is smooth as hell but he doesn't quite have the energy that Jerry brought to the equation. At least not as consistently. He definitely rips it up on guitar every so often, and I think he's still easing into the role.
You guys that think Johnny is the new Jerry.... He's not! I love his music and his incredible way to play GD, I mean so fresh, but, honestly, the good deal is Bobby, he's might be for me the best memory of Jerry. Be kind people
As a classically trained musician, which doesn’t mean much, I’d have to say John Mayer is probably the greatest overall guitarist alive today. Of course my anonymous opinion means nothing.
The guy can’t even tell you the scales or anything he’s using. I think that’s why (imho) he’s the best not only guitar player but best musician alive. He just gets music.
I cant even hear that their voices were sped up. Or any of it really. The boys are just that air tight in their jams on a good night. The faster version is dope, I love it
John Mayer hasn't. Play in" Jerry, he's playing John Meyer and he's awesome at doing that. He's young and clearly his music means much to him. So, here's my bad news, nobody can play Jerry. Miss him everyday AND thank you John for stepping in when you did, the music is fresh and as Jerry would have wanted, the music never stopped! Peace
Oh man, this is the next vid after a '90 Foolish Heart and before that '79 Seattle...this is sooo f'n lame in comparison, good because it's before the Great Slowdown, but then again Mayer's still doing his Constipated Turtle moves..then they straightened him out but the commanded lethargy conquered all...
Sorry I'm a critical jerk. Not only is it already agonizingly slow, it feels like the song is going to come to a grinding halt. It lacks the groove and pace from other original Dead performances.
MrMushrooms420 regardless of how old you are you sound like a child. I’d like to know who you think should replace John. Imo he’s their best option and what’s really important is that the music keeps getting played. They don’t want someone who just rips off Jerry they want someone who brings something new to the table and can keep the music alive. Jerry is dead any nobody can be who he was and anyone who tries sounds like a rip off. John has the skill and knowledge to play the music as he sees it with his eyes and his hands and that’s what the band and the fans want
@@ianbyrnes1094 you obviously have never heard a dead show ... Listen to a dead show and then listen to John K....then John M..you must be phucking deaf
@@ianbyrnes1094 love how all these new age phans was to talk about Jerry's sound. Go tell that to some realheads and seee how much fluff gets put into your drink
