Dead Milkmen The Secret of Life

I saw a cigar shaped flying ship
It landed outside on my lawn
You poked your head out of a door
And said, "Hurry up get on."
I've never seen the sight before
The world became a shrinking ball
I asked where you were taking me
You said, "Shut up and you will see."
[Chorus]
Waves of time they rock us back and forth
There's no telling if we'll stay on course
We raced across the galaxy
Away from all our ugliness
I felt beautiful and free
Out where the devil can't exist
I felt a burst of energy
Hot white light poured from your eyes
We sped into infinity
I felt beautiful and free
[Chorus]
Now I'm no longer in my life
I've left all my friends behind
Now letters don't get past my door
I can't really read them anymore
You took me to another world
Where time ceases to hold sway
And computers contain the missing key
To life's most sacred mystery
The secret of life is no secret at all
For secrets hold death and
Lies only build walls

This literally just happened to me last month (except it was 30 years)! I listened to big lizard in its entirety for the first time in about 30 years, and totally forgot about the beach song. When it started up, it was like getting thrown back in time, and for a moment I was 14 sitting on my bed listening to my walkman... it was really nice.

I was sitting on my couch thinking of all I could, there was a song playing I understood, So I stopped and turned it up. The rest of the world just stopped there with me, we all had a laugh and left reality. Maybe I saw too much to understand, but ever since I just don't care. The secret to me is no secret at all, I laugh instead of cry and I know that's how it goes. I just heard this on the radio, almost 20 years to the day. I started smiling then I cried, I felt beautiful and free.

I noticed most of the fans who liked DM prior to this album didnt care for this song and the album because it is such a departure from what they started out doing. A lot of DM fans have accused "Soul Rotation" of being a commercial sell-out or merely an "attempt" at artistic growth. But I think it's one of those rare "radio friendly" crossovers that were actually just as good as a band's previous works. "Soul Rotation" marks the Dead Milkmen as a band that captured two genres of rock really well: uninhibited punk rock and pop rock. In spite of the grunge onslaught that drowned them out, DM pulled off a good record because they're just damn good rockers.

To me its a song about a lost lover. You showed me everything that I ever needed: The secret of life. We shared so many secrets and spread our love unto this universe with more torch bearers of peace to replace us. Passion never dies and neither does love; who ive become with you is still the man ill always be. Our eternity was heaven before you got to see for yourself.
