Dead Taillight - BMW E39 525i - Replacing the Taillight Housing

Here’s how I changed out the entire taillight housing on my 2002 BMW 525i E39. After experiencing all of the lights being out at once, I inspected the connector and found heavy corrosion on the female connect of the housing. I found a used taillight on ebay for around $70 USD.
This is my first video filming with my Sony A7 I. I’m using an SMC Takumar 50mm F/1.4. This is a vintage fully manual lens so please be patient with any shots that are out of focus. I’m still learning the equipment.

As a Romanian this is probably the only time I've ever heard an American say that BMW's are so easy to work on. Which is absolutely true. I guess the rest of the videos I watched, those guys were more at ease with American cars. It always blows my mind whenever I come across US yt videos in which mechanics would diss BMW's as junk cars or hard to work on. Everything is so logical and easy.

Thanks! Indeed. My opinion of them being easy to work on ends around the 2009+ cars. After that, they became much more reliant on electronic systems that require a lot of expensive and proprietary tools that most owners don’t have access to. But prior to that, things are wonderful!

@@Casey_Schmidt even before that. For instance the e65 7 Series- first super over engineered with tones of novelties. You need Ista diagnose software to work on the electronics. The e60- 2004-2010, also. But once you do have the diagnostics, mechanics are still easy to work on. Access is easy. Components' locations are placed in a logical way. It's simply the ultimate driving machine (I've owned lots of e39's, e60's, e36, e46 etc). Best manufacturer.

Thanks for posting! And for including comments about getting the male connector separated.

Your led was blinking when your blinker was on. Youve got a bad ground. In fact we all do. I drilled a small hole on the "pcb" as you called it and riveted in an O connector that i then wired to the ground wire before it reaches the male plug. I found the female pin was completely burned down in the housing. And for people who find the bulb fitting to have melted, ive noticed that its possible to put the bulb in backwards yet it still kindof fits so that it works but its arcing constantly. Wiggle it real well once you think youre in ;-) it may save you a fire!

Is this an original Hella taillight? And if so, do they only come with those 4 LED dots on the side on US spec models? Cause I bought original Hellas awhile ago, but live in Europe and our taillights don't have those LED side dots.

I’m not sure what the difference are between the US and EU versions but I can confirm that it is an original Hella/BMW taillight.

That white square is the back up light. And it should have a fog light as well. The little red square on the right hand side. - on Europe e39's. I just learnt a new thing. Never knew US doesn't have fog lights.

I have 2001 525i the passenger side brake light socket fried and practically melted to the female connector. I bought a new male socket but that’s not fixing it. I’m going to try to take off the housing to see if I can clean the female part that it “melted to”. If not guess I’ll buy a new housing unit.

I’m not quite sure why these cars have this issue. It’s not something you’d think to check.

@@Casey_Schmidt who knows, something with the voltage going to the lighting maybe? The third brake light on this car would constantly go out.

@@Bernstylz I had the same issue a while back. The center brake light bulb holder completely melted.

@@Casey_Schmidt Update: I ended up using some tin foil to bridge the gap between the socket and the housing. Works fine now lol

never gonna go above e38 e39 e53 e46 -- best generation. thanks though

I think the E90, E60, E86 are good as well. No more complicated than those generations but slightly more advanced. In my opinion, once BMW got to their all-turbo era post 2009, they cars went downhill immediately.
