Boo, Mappo and Icarium are the best part of the book because of their friendship.

I love Mappo and Icarium's friendship, especially as it develops in later books. The events that happen in Bonehunters are heartbreaking! I just found their chapters to be soooooo...slowwwwwwww.

Potsherds and detritus! As far as Felisin is concerned, it would be weird if she wasn't whiny. She's a teenager who's been through just absolute hell. Erikson does a great job of making her both quite insufferable and highly sympathetic simultaneously. As for the Bridgeburners, the argument made in Memories of Ice, is that killing them wasn't intentional, but a mistake made by Tayschren. Them being outlawed was a ploy, but the Pale incident was supposedly just fuck up by Tayschren. But also, Kalam couldn't have killed Laseen anyways since she wasn't there.

Lol I LOVE potsherds and detritus! Good point about Felisin, and I fairly remember the point about Tayschrenn now that I think about it. Which is fine because I hate Tayschrenn too. 😛

I think he did a good job making Felisin insufferable, but not as good a job making her sympathetic. I had sympathy with her until they escaped the mines and she was STILL being really petty and cruel to the two people who were helping her...they could have left her in there but they rescued her and she spends half the book yelling at or insulting them.

This is my favorite erikson malazan book. Really hooked me for the rest of the series. If you like fantasy war writing this is top notch. Great generals. Tactics. Individual fights. Battle mayhem. Defeat aftermath. Sick!! Thanks for the review!!

I think since you have read ahead you should already kinda know that Laseen is not on the same scheming level as Shadowthrone and does a terrible job filling in his shoes but she is working with what she’s got and the empire is crumbling around her since the old guard is gone. Don’t hate on Tavore though, she knew what she was doing sending her sister away and understood the risks involved. I think your opinion on her may change as your finish the series. DG def has one of the most gut wrenching moments of the series, until MoI came along.

I do agree on Tavore. I did end up liking her, though i still think she should have seen Felisin's troubles coming. But yes! Laseen is no Kellanved, which i actually DO like that it just seems like she's always putting out fires, but my love of Kellanved precludes me from empathizing. I just finished Toll the Hounds, so I'm interested to see how this all wraps up.

The "fall" is such an emotional moment. The best fantasy for me is the one with momen like these that make me she a tear or ten. Chain of Dogs subplot is one of the best in malazan books. I find it interesting how the events and fallen of chain of dogs become cult figures in seven cities later one, including members of the Red Blade who are thought of as turn coat by there seven cities countrymen. Great video, would love it if you did similar ones for other malazan books. I vote for bigger sections to spoiled filled discussion.

Hard agree. I first read the Chain if Dogs 12 years ago and have never forgotten it. One of the best scenes in fantasy for sure.

I suspected that kellenvad and dancer are ascended when their accents were mentioned in GoTm, and there were many more hints afterwards. I think it's great that some of the things you can see or suspect really early and others you never fully understand. Also kalam couldn't kill laseen because she wasn't even in the room, only spoken through corpse, which I think is ability of topper because we saw him earlier doing that.

I was the weird kid in school who was rooting for the Persians in the Persian Wars lol (god I love Cyrus the Great so much). So, Mithridates naturally was a magnet for my attention.

Update: finished the book, watched your spoilers section, and I agree with your rants about Fellisin and Lasseen. I certainly thought that Kalam took her word for it a bit too easily...he should maybe with check the story with Dujek before just believing whatever Lasseen tells him. Also I agree about Shadowthrone and Cotillion...when I read the first book, I had no idea who they really were until I accidentally saw a spoiler on it. Then it was made clear to the reader in DG but it’s not clear how the other characters figure it out so easily. Also I still don’t understand why Shadowthrone can’t just take the throne back, now he’s an Ascendant (sort of demi-god?) and has all these Hounds, you would think he could overpower Lasseen easily. I’m guessing that will be explained in future books.

I'm guessing your past it by now. But I think it's mentioned briefly. If they had returned after they ascended and ruled an empire the other gods would have taken notice and maybe set themselves against them.

I just finished it for the first time. I thought it was just terrific. Personally, I loved Mappo and Iccarium. But I agree with you that Felisin is absolutely insufferable. And she just treats Heboric like total garbage for 2/3 of the book. The best part of that story was when Kulp was trying to get everyone to ditch her lol.

I have hated my time with this book. Erickson is the master at saying nothing for the first 700 pages and making the last 200 pages exciting. This book needs an editor as Erickson rambles on and on and on… man this was hard to get through, not because of its content but because it is BORING. I hope the series improves

You have to be in the right mood to enjoy this one. I did not finish the book the first time I read it. I hated it. Put it ony my DNF list, stopped in the middle. About a year later, I was in the mood for it, picked it up again and it became one of my top books of all times (for me) yes its slow, but its dense, it has thick atmosphere, great characters and the book is more about the journey than the goal itself and its absolutely epic.
