PLEASE READ: Before you comment saying I'm wrong about using the Superman bit from Kill Bill, please refer to the many comments below already addressing that. If you think I had no other reason to use those lines, pay more attention. PS: Bill being "wrong" about Superman was the point of that scene. Also, I admit I was most likely wrong about the Mask De Smith connection, it makes much more sense that it's a nod to Morio Smith (M.S) from Super Fire Pro Wrestling Special.
Continuing our trip through Suda's path to conquer the West, we take a deep look into No More Heroes, the city of Santa Destroy, as well as Travis Touchdown and the eccentric characters he confronts.

Travis is genuinely the most down to earth action character just because of the fact he does mundane shit and does what he does just because of his selfish desires.

Yeah that’s what I love about Travis the fact he’s top rank assassin in the world but at the same time looks and acts like that one friend you hang out with every now and then and have great time and this is why Travis is my favorite hack and slash video game character of all time way more than Dante Kratos Bayonetta and even Sora while they are great characters in own way yeah but Travis has certain charm and relatability that just can’t be match in my book
@Dovah21
@Dovah21 3 года назад
And it's not even really about just basic "selfish desire". He basically says right at the start of NMH 1, I think it's to Death Metal, paraphrased "I don't care about money or power, I just wanna be the best there is at this shit. I want to be #1!" See right there, that's a man striving towards an ideal: being the best there is at what you do, whatever it is. It's killing in this case, so opinions may vary on the idealism of that, but I don't see Travis going around killing innocents so I give him a pass.

Notice how Jeane does the DestroyMan thing of begging for her life, but as soon as she realizes Travis won't fall for that, she drops the facade and gives her life with honor. She's a summary of every boss he has fought so far, an addict to killing who has destroyed her life but doesn't let that put her down because of her huge pride, but at the tail end of her life she realizes that it was worthless,

It's weird, but one thing that most people seem to forget about is Travis's monologue during the first boss fight that kinda forshadows the story. Although he starts off talking about how his future would be full of riches and women, he realizes that what's happening to Death Metal could happen to him. Then it takes an interesting turn when he talks about finding an exit to paradise, but he can't. To me, much of Travis's motivation, attitude, and reasoning for his actions could boil down to him trying to find an exit. It's like he's aware what the true nature of death is, but chooses to ignore it to try and escape. It's not farfetched, since his initial motivation was thought to be to bang Silvia, and that it's almost like he purposely blocked out his vengeance against Jeane, since the way he says he met Silvia and how he actually met her is different. However, by seeing the other assassins, he realizes that it won't work this way, hence why he says that there's no way out to Henry and that the only chance is getting to Paradise.

@RipsharkTV
@RipsharkTV 5 лет назад
@@jackalongsingalong664 The games make no attempt to hide Travis's sociopathic nature. I think for him the bullshit just outweighs the thrill. He still likes violence and is an assassin at heart, but probably didn't want to make his entire life about it...I think. ..hence him being way in over his head unknowingly joining in Slyvia's scam.

I love No More Heroes. No joke, when I was in high school I made it my mission to track down and acquire literally every bit of memorabilia for the game. Both soundtracks, the statue of Sylvia, No More Heroes Red Zone, No More Heroes Paradise as well as the comic book, DVD and Erotica Portraits. My prized Possession is a phone card with a nice drawing of Jeane that cost me over $100. I was obsessed haha. Not as crazy about it anymore but it has no doubt impacted my life and own creativity. Jeane was my favorite character and I’d personally like to see an MGS3 style sequel for the third game where you’re sent back in time to relive the horrible life Jeane had to endure.

This is kinda the most controversial moment that many got wrong, even Kill Bill. Clark Kent isn't Superman's costume, it's the other way around. He was born as Kal'El, raised by the Kents in Smallville, then he BECAME Superman. Before he was Superman and before he found out about his Kryptonian herritage, he was a kid and he lived a normal life just like you and me. He went to school, he did chores, he was a farm boy, he grew up and got a job as a reporter for the Daily Planet. When he found out about his Kryptonian heritage, he was scared; he didn't want to be a superhero, he refused his heritage. However at a certain point when push came to shove, he stepped up and embraced it. It took him time and a Hell of a lot of training, but he eventually embraced his Kryptonian heritage and BECAME the Man of Steel. Clark Kent is NOT the costume, Superman IS the costume. He may have been born Kal'El, but he was raised as Clark Kent.
@DaedalosC9
@DaedalosC9 4 года назад

@MaxLoafin
@MaxLoafin 4 года назад
From an outside perspective, Clark Kent is the costume and Superman is the true identity. Like oh look, Superman is pretending to be a weak, mild-mannered news reporter when he's REALLY a badass alien. It's all perspective. I'm sure he sees himself as Clark Kent before Superman, but that's because he was raised to think so. Ask yourself this, which persona has him pretending to be something he's not? Clark Kent.
@lewisdavidson571
@lewisdavidson571 4 года назад
@@MaxLoafin It's the reverse of Batman. Bruce Wayne is 100% the mask and Batman is the real guy. However, Superman is the mask for Clark, simply because Clark only wants to help people not be a symbol of perfection.
@MaxLoafin
@MaxLoafin 4 года назад
@@lewisdavidson571 They're both really similar actually. However, the Batman persona only exists because vigilante justice is illegal and the Clark Kent persona was given to Superman by his adoptive family because he was an alien. Kent was born superman, raised as Kent, and eventually accepted that he's Superman. He was born with absurd power and ability. Batman was born Bruce Wayne, a whiney rich kid who's actions led to the unfortunate murder of his parents and this led him to change into Batman. Superman changing into Superman is accepting who he is while Batman turning to Batman was a coping mechanism. That's why I said "from an outside perspective". You can't become Superman through ideology and dedication, you have to be born like that. Anyone could theoretically be Batman if they were rich enough and dedicated enough. You'll have to do better to convince me otherwise
@blanktrigger8863
@blanktrigger8863 3 года назад
@@MaxLoafin You're confusing the powers that come from Kryptonian biology with identity. Power =/= identity. For example, when you say his parents raised him to see himself as Clark Kent, what does that mean? This statement makes no sense unless you presume that the powers from being Kryptonian should somehow make him "x" kind of person necessarily. It's illogical. He was born Kal-El, not Superman; a kryptonian, not Superman. Superman reflects nothing essential about how his life except his powers. However, Clark Kent reflects his entire life, and this is most exposed in his relationship with Lois. This post does a pretty good job laying out the basic template: www.reddit.com/r/FanTheories/comments/4wn1vu/superman_is_a_dork/

The best part? You don't have to notice, or care, about any of that. It's surface level humour and outlandish scenarios and plot are enough to carry it. The depth can be sought if you want more, which stops it feeling heavy, forced or in your face. At least in my opinion

Another thing I heard about certain character designs is that in Japan its common to put the main hero's color in red as thats how they view it there, red being the protagonist. Can't remember where I heard that but thought that was interesting now that I'm looking back on NMH. Once again, excellent work!

While i disagree with a lot of the points brought up in this video, it was really well made and conveyed the points really well!!!! My reading of the game is that it's more of a commentary on videogame violence and the players of violent games more than anything, and that a lot of the story and characters just spout vapid vaguely philosophical bullshit on purpose. A lot of the time talking to player directly asking why they like the killing so much (a-la hotline miami). This is highlighted by the Jeane cutscene where they just skip over her backstory because it would kill the pacing and honestly who cares?? All the story is just a crappy pleasantry for the violence that videogame players crave, and that's okay. Really interesting to see it from a different perspective though!! And i'm so glad these games are being looked at from multiple angles with different readings! Can't wait to check out the NMH2 video once i finish that game!
@Ghenry
@Ghenry 3 года назад
I understand the notion, but I'd argue that Suda most likely doesn't consider the story in that light. A "crappy pleasantry" for anything is the last way I'd describe any of the other games he's written and directed, so I don't see why he would do such a disservice to what he considers the most important part of making a game (the story) for NMH1. Sorry if I'm being presumptuous, but perhaps you haven't experienced his earlier work like The Silver Case or Flower, Sun, and Rain. Or even Travis Strikes Again, which was his return to writing/directing a game after NMH1. That game especially presses on how important storytelling and narrative is to him as a creator.

@@Ghenry i actually finished no more heroes the day i wrote the comment, i played through killer7 beforehand currently playing through nmh2 and then ill try and check out the previous games you mentioned before travis strikes again i just saw the meta-commentary take a much higher prescence in nmh than killer 7 and the way the story is presented feels a lot like (not an afterthought but) more purposefully sparse maybe my opinion will change after playing through the others, i just kind of felt the vibe after finishing the game lol! still love the video!

This is an amazing video but I must disagree with your point on Destroy Man and Clark Kent, Superman was Clark Kent before he was Superman. Clark lived like a normal boy up until he found out about his heritage at which point he made Superman.
@Ghenry
@Ghenry 6 лет назад
I'll admit I was more hooked on the idea of simply using the Kill Bill scene because I love the last line Bill says to Kiddo, but I'd also argue that it's also about what a person's fate is. While he thought he was just a normal boy named Clark Kent, nothing would stop the "Superman" that was within to eventually grow out and form his character. And someone like Destroyman was probably always going to turn out to be the deceptive psychopath that he was.

@@Ghenry I'd argue that scene in Kill Bill is less Tarantino giving his conclusive view on Superman, and more using a commonly known example to show Bill as a character. Bill thinks people stay the way they are, that nobody can be redeemed or changed, a killer will always be a killer no matter how hard they try. Superman is what Superman is, Clark Kent is who superman is. He would have always been superman, because superman is simply the powers he was born with. But any other parentage would have resulted in somebody completely different then Clark Kent.

That was great, you really nailed it for most of the points you've made regarding the game. You could have added the theme of the endless struggle, where the bosses warn Travis that once he entered this world there is no exit. When you fight Death Metal Travis gives this grand speech about his dream life and how it's a facade and he can't find the exit. It doesn't make much, but only after you finish the game with the real ending and restart the game, then this speech makes total sense. Anyway, you did an awesome job, sorry for the long reply, you're the best around, peace.

Some of the most captivating stories I've witnessed were born out of satire. The Invincible comic series is probably the best example. While I don't doubt Suda's initial intention of it being a parody of sorts, I think with his background, general impact and symbolism people perceive with NMH was something he was thinking of.

I have never played No More Heroes. The only reason why I know about this game is because I watched my cousin play it all night (at the time, I was too young to understand the concept of playing video games and merely watched my cousins play everything). But god damn, watching and experiencing it with him was as good as playing it. The music, the gore, the combat, the assassins, Travis motherfuckin Touchdown, and even the mundane side jobs you had to do are all burned into my memory. I honestly want to buy it just to play it myself. This video helped me reminisce about the times when I'd sleepover at my cousins house so I can watch/play games with them. No More Heroes will forever hold a special place in my heart and my memories.

look man this is an awesome video but that bit about superman is totally incorrect. as good as that little monologue was in context of the film, that parallel makes no sense, because the monologue is totally wrong about superman's character. clark kent was raised human, clark kent was just a normal kid long before he was ever superman. that's where he gets his personality, his love of humanity, and his kind heart. the movies totally screwed with the public perception of superman's character, they make him into a stoic, especially the movies nowadays, when really superman is a much different character. destroyman is, in my opinion, much more a parody and somewhat of a deconstruction of the perception we make of action heroes such as those we find in comics - in that destroyman is the superhero you might find in a world like this, a world that seems to almost be passive to the idea of death while still taking it seriously. a world that entertains its viewers with its ludicrous amounts of blood and gore. it distinctly makes fun of the tropes it makes a caricature out of with a background that we, the viewers, do not have any direct experience with. to say it's a play on the concept of a superhero character from the real world would be nearing a mark, but not quite on it.
@Ghenry
@Ghenry 5 лет назад
I'm glad you liked it, despite that! I'm a little miffed of how many Superman takes I've gotten, but no big deal. While I get people's issue with how Bill describes Superman, the thing I wanted people to take away from that is Superman, unlike the other popular super heroes, wasn't conceived through circumstance, it started with something he was born with, something that came naturally. And, despite his background and growing up, that heroic part of him will come out in one sense or another. Granted, I haven't read every single piece of Superman comics, I felt that was part of the significance behind Red Son and Earth-10. I think Destroyman and his depiction feels more like a commentary on psychopathy being born within a person that you become familiar with over time (more so than any of the other bosses), and how easy one can hide it. Just like Superman and his natural ability. But it's all just opinion, I'm not saying I'm correct. Like this entire analysis, this is just how I took the game.
