Nice to see that Suda's earned the admiration of Shin Megami Tensei demons! Also I think Suda's story was quite believable, given how many things can go wrong in the sports-entertainment industry. Concussions C alone are things that can drive wrestlers down a dark path later on in life, and even instances where real drama between wrestlers bleed into the narrative they're trying to create (Matt Hardy & Lita being a prime example).
Suda51 actually inspires me to make my own games in the future (which I’m working on and the music too) especially on how Suda makes his games at times.
We are so lucky to have Suda51, truly he's one of the few directors that is making genuine art. Sooo much style and character that would otherwise be too risky to big game companies.
Big pro gamer tips for new players: you can speed up the walking and text in both Silver Case games by holding X (just be sure to not accidentally skip text, because there's no log function) Don't feel like a brainlet for cheating to get the fast walking early in FSR. Trust me, you'll still spend plenty of time walking with it.
I actually have come to realize that Kill the Past (or something like it) is a theme in a novel I've been hoping to work on this year. I've had ideas in my head for a few years while I have been doing other things and it's been amazing how much the story and characters have developed over time. I need to finally write it so that I don't carry the regret of not doing it as I start to enter the next chapter of my life. Learning about the strong sense of self within Suda51's work and his struggles as a creator has really inspired me.
@@QurenTheShield Thanks for the encouragement! I have a lot of notes and potential text and dialogue, and for the longest time one of the problems was figuring out the best place to start the story. I decided not to overthink things and just start where it felt the most natural. If I decide to go in a different direction later, trying it this way will still have been a rewarding experience. I can always go back and rework it.
@@QurenTheShield I actually started writing from the beginning a couple of days before this video dropped. I've found that sometimes I tend to actually come up with some written content for the story out of order because writing one thing from earlier in the story inspires me to write other things that will be placed later, especially if writing from the perspective from one character makes me contrast them with another character and how they each think. Like for example, I was writing from the perspective of the protagonist in the first character and they are very in the limelight and get a lot of attention, whereas the antagonist is living more in solitude.
Dude, just wanted to say you make great videos. I've played a lot of Suda's titles except for killer7 and the ones before it. Should be playing killer7 soon. I'm a huge No More Heroes fan and can't wait for part 3 and to hopefully see it added to your deadly individualism videos.
Killer 7 is one of those games where I am way too dumb to understand. But I'm heavily invested in it. Though it's taking me a long time to finish it though
@@teneesh3376 there's nothing wrong with that. I feel like when a cult classic like killer7 takes awhile for someone to complete, maybe the creators of that classic is doing something right. It's making the player think about things from more than one perspective without things just neatly written out for you and I love that. That's why I have to play it before NMH 3 drops.

14:49 - Can confirm that The Silver Case (DS) is cheap in EU territory aswell, saw it two years ago in a local store for only 10 Euros (altough it is hard to find).
I didn't know about most of his past work until Killer 7 and so forth. Quite interesting to see where it all started and looking at his work through his philosophy of game making.

It's also worth noting that one of Suda's more subtle inspirations is David Lynch. He takes cues from Lynch's style of storytelling and some of the concepts introduced in his works, such as Killer Bob and Kamui Uehara possibly being an idea rather than an actual entity. And just in general, what you see in his works can either be taken literally or figuratively, but knowing who Suda and Lynch are as people and what they've said in the past gives you even deeper insight into the more out-there content in their works. Also also, I really want to see what role Sundance Shot would have played in Killer 7. Maybe if he makes that "complete version" he eluded at in one of his interviews.

NMH3 curiously comes out at this age where the most important thing is to live from the past. Think about it, many current products appeal to nostalgia or are remakes/sequels of past hits, leaving behind new ideas and new icons.

Like most people I played No More Heroes and Killer 7 but the history you display here and the nuances of all the games really make me wanna play them. My first Suda51 game was Killer7 but I didn't play it until late 2006. Ever since then I've been playing his games, I still own the FSR DS copy even though I don't own a DS anymore. XD It would be sweet if some publisher gave him a shit ton of money, I would love to see what crazy game he would make next.
Great video, I've only known about a few Suda 51 games like Shadows of the Damned, No More Heroes, Killer 7 and Killer is Dead. But Silver Case looks right up my alley I am definitely going to check that out.

Cool video! I loved the first 2 NMH games, and I plan on playing Killer 7 and other Suda 51 games, but I never heard of the 25th Ward, let alone that it was available in English! Thanks for that. Also, it's understandable that Killer 7 is a super niche title. I mean, the story is confusing to the point that it doesn't seem to make any sense, and it has such a unique control scheme, combining an on-rails shooter with a third-person adventure game. Killer 7 is not a game that would attract a lot of casual gamers.
Believe it or not, but my dream was to work at Grasshopper and create a game with this violence / comedy. Kill the past would then be something like not thinking about your past mistakes or failures, but moving on even if you make mistakes. Suda was an undertaker and today he is one of the coolest gamer designers I know
I don't think it's plausible because we already have a Wrestler, And plus Super Fire Pro takes place in a different universe from killer7. Plus he likes the name alot just Like Travis and Mondo
I think the only human game that are lightly connected is moonlight syndrome. Case#00 in the silver case is the aftermath of moonlight syndromes ending.
Fire Pro World is my favorite wrestling game ever, tying with WCW/NWO revenge and No Mercy. If you are even remotely into wrestling and Suda51 games, the DLC stories are goofy, but weird enough to be fun. I am sure Suda51 scenario is going to be incredible.

also in the 25th ward the storyline that was the the most interesting to me was correctness,it was really confusing and i feel that is to the storylines creddit, also the 100 endings were hilarius, i also feel like this the most underated of the three
The phrase "Kill the Past" never occurred to me while I played Killer is Dead. Its a bit more obvious to me now as * spoilers* Mondo takes on his past in the form of his brother and does in fact kill him to get stronger and move on. Although the ending may not be entirely canon or maybe set further in the future as Mondo does appear in Travis Strikes Again to give Travis one of the Death Balls and threatens to kill him if he gets in his way.
Who says Killer Is Dead occurred before Travis Strikes Again? The timeline and continuity is sketchier than ever, which is why I stressed in the video that it shouldn't be what people focus on when taking in the world of "Kill the Past"

I might do a deeper video on those, but I can't really say right now. Maybe when a remaster of Flower, Sun, and Rain happens. I've played through it on DS, but I'd prefer to experience the console version and translated more accurately (which Suda would probably have more control over than the DS port).

One thing that always gets me is that people will talk for days about how much symbolism is in Killer7 but very few can actually explain what it is. At least NMH 1 and 2 were a little more straight forward with that.
There's been guides and descriptions online for years what a lot of the symbolism in killer7 means, but I do agree that it's not that easy to catch without having second-hand knowledge of a lot of history.

Silver Case and 25th Ward are the only visual novel games I've played in their entirety from beginning to end that aren't part of the "Ace Attorney" franchise (if you even want to call those visual novels). I've always said Silver Case is too unique to be labeled as such, and that goes double for 25th Ward. I hope you give them a try sometime, especially since they're on the cheaper side
I didn't need a pen and paper for The Silver Case. The Japanese names were a non-issue for me, since each character was memorable and distinct from one another. The prologue chapter was a bit iffy, but the rest of the game was smooth sailing for me. I always love games with that distinct 90's charm to them (not the "Whoa duuuuude" American kind).
That doesn't really prove anything. I know which advertising you're talking about, I think only a single trailer ever brought up killer7, which didn't sell well at all and whomever was in charge of marketing likely tacked that factoid on since it was the only original game of his at that point which actually reached the United States. Most people first learned about him through No More Heroes.
@@Ghenry most people in the US learned about him through his second game in the US based on what? Killer 7 didn't sell well because it was on the GameCube and it was weird but it was widely discussed and highly regarded for many years. I don't think they would have marketed and advertised as nmh as evidence that the Wii can do adult games if the name Suda 51 had no weight in the magazine buying, game review tv show watching adult community of gamers at the time.
I base it on literally what you just said. It didn't sell. It got a cult following, but that's it. The attention NMH got as an M-rated exclusive Wii title helped it stand out significantly and it ended up selling very well on the Wii alone. About 3x of killer7's sales, according to recorded charts from back then. Stack that on PS3 which helped expose the series further. I'm not sure why you find it so unbelievable that most people first learned about him through NMH, especially these days when that's all most people want to talk about when it comes to his work. Maybe you first learned about him from killer7, but that isn't the case for the majority of people in the community nor industry.
@@Ghenry It had larger sales because more people had Wiis than GameCubes. If anything those sales suggest that the branding of Suda 51 was effective. Just because you didn't buy a game doesn't mean you didn't know about it. I find it hard to believe that someone could be totally tuned out of gaming discourse for all of the years that Killer 7 was out. If you were a gamer during that time you probably read magazines or watched g4 and they definitely talked about this critical darling of the time and it's likely you would have seen cutscenes from the game on that channel as well. The media channels were pretty limited at the time. You looked at what was presented to you.
Thanks for this; despite having also been a fan since No More Heroes first released, and having played most of GHM's library by now, you managed to shed some new light on a few things for me. Particularly Flower Sun & Rain as well as 25th Ward. For the former, the way I had interpreted it was that Sumio was always in such a rush to get things done that he did not have an appreciation for the fullness of life and experiences and other people that were around him. I still believe this could be true at the same time, but what you said makes more sense. As far as 25th Ward goes, well...I didn't not like it, but as a huge fan of Silver Case, it was hard not to be a bit disappointed when I understood far less of it. I'm not one to overhype how "zany" games are, but I legitimately did not get the gist of it as someone who imported Silver Case and guessed at most of it before it was announced for PS4. I still dislike the particular continuation of Tokio's story, and especially don't like the 100 endings thing(even as someone who managed to get through Drakengard 3's final boss), but at least I think I have a better grasp on it now. Travis Strikes Again was a pleasant surprise. I was simply happy to get anything NMH related at all after so long, especially with how I would have preferred games like Let it Die to simply be straight up single player instead of a pay to win model, but I wasn't expecting this game to have as much heart in it as it did. So now, I am actually more worried about the inverse - that NMH3 will be some soulless sequel made to appeal to the more casual fans who just want the funny stuff. Nothing totally wrong with it as its what got me here in the first place, and really, I think I should have more faith in the company by now, especially after the last trailer. Definitely zany, but also very different from the past 3 games in the series. As an aspiring artist, I've been brainstorming and planning a couple different projects for many months now to see if they sit well and how they develop, and among many elements inspired by all these games, one in particular is more or less based off of Kurayami, or really just the early ideas shown for Shadows of the Damned, as a sort of a tribute I suppose. But I'm also trying to make it my own, as well. So, is that killing the past, in a sense? Since the original idea will never truly be, and perhaps was never meant to be, and in doing my own research I've learned much more about Kafka's 'The Castle' and general Czech and Bohemia history and Slavic folklore and mythology and all sorts of things down the rabbit hole I never thought I'd bother to learn myself, in attempting this story, never mind it being through my own lens and thus my past experiences and whatnot...just a lot to mull over.
I don't think there's much worry over NMH3's production and how Suda will direct it. It's a grand stage that he's going to be on when it comes to that game, but he's made it clear that he is prioritizing the people that legitimately love his work and supported him through Travis Strikes Again. Meanwhile, I'm sure there'll be plenty to enjoy for those that don't follow all of his pieces.
Honestly out of all of the no more heroes games Travis strikes again is my favorite. Travis being a literal stand in for suda it’s was extremely obvious from the beginning. It’s funny I really didn’t like the game that much my first time through I was like yeah it’s a suda game all flash but no meat. But god damn was I wrong my second time through....and then my third. You really read into the things that Travis says or does he feels like a character that’s evolved since his debut which other game companies have an extremely hard time doing. I could list em off but seriously my only one I have that’s actually somewhat changed is Kratos in the new god of war. It’s just nice to see a character not as bloodthirsty as he was when he first came out and get upset when he actually has to kill a boss that he genuinely liked. Like someone saying good bye for the last time. I’m sure they’ll keep that character development for NMH3 and I’m really looking forward to it Travis moving on with his life and getting passed the bullshit that’s been weighing him down. Kill the past baby.
