In today's adventure, Coyote Peterson and the Brave Wilderness crew returns to the Australian Reptile Park to profile the World's Deadliest Job: Australian Snake Milker. This time, we're here to milk Australia's Top 5 Dangerous Venomous Snakes: The King Brown aka Mulga, the Death Adder, the Tiger Snake, the Costal Taipan, and the notorious Eastern Brown.
Billy Collett, the Operations Manager at the Australian Reptile Park, handles these magnificent reptiles almost every day in order to help produce life-saving antivenom. But just because he handles them every day doesn't mean there aren't close calls -- especially when it comes to the Eastern Brown!
We want to thank the Australian Reptile Park and the fearless Billy Collett for all the work they do in helping to create the life-saving anti-venom! Visit their website for more information and to plan a visit to the reptile park: reptilepark.com.au
Thank you to Meredith Joyce-Houghton for creating the incredible artwork in this episode! IG: @joycehoughtoncreative

Passion for reptiles is very real. For how dangerous they are, it's similar to the passion scientists and activists have for primates or insects, arachnids, etc. Great pay is one thing, but honestly, I will admit working with these animals seems fun and very rewarding.

Indeed, I think reptiles are awesome and love learning more about them. I personally have no issue or fear handling any snake or spider, or really any commonly feared animal as long as I have 100% assurances it poses no threat to me. Unfortunately, these snakes don’t qualify for that list.@@lordofchaos97

I was wondering that too: *why don't they use protective gear* ? Just a speculation on my part, a material that is not pierced by those fangs restricts handlers movement and if the snake loses the venom biting the gear, very little venom can be taken afterwards, so they choose the most dangerous route to maximize yield.

My worst one so far was going for a bike ride, hoping off my mike, and then being a millimeter from stepping on a red belly black snake. It’s really nerve racking. That was very good to know how to react in the snake bite situation, also had no idea how anti-venom was made so that's very insightful. That's one hell of an important job Billy has!

It's such a dangerous job they do and without the workers doing what they do alot of people would have no chance at survival. Huge respect for what they do and huge respect for you coming down here to Australia to see all theses animals we have.

Great job, Billy. You guys are doing a great / scary thing to help many people. And the "bitten" first aid demonstration was a nice thing to include. Stay safe, everyone. 😊👍

No snake here in Australia scares me, but the death adder does. The fast strike but mostly because they're true ambush predators and blend in with leaf litter, not to mention they are small. I'm always worried about stepping on one

fellow Aussie here who lives in an area with a lot of snakes, Im the same, they hide under leaves and very hard to see. If you are invenomated ( is that a word?) it takes up to 72 hours for symtoms to show and they show as neurological damage which only a specialist can pick up. I know this as i was bitten by a baby snake i didnt see and was in hospital for 4 days just in case. Eastern browns i see often but they just want to get away from you, all snakes do really.. you just stand still or stomp the ground from a few metres away and they move on

Not Australian, but agree perfectly. Inland Taipan's may be flighty but they're beautiful and my favorite. Death Adders are gorgeous too, but because of being extremely fast and that lower jaw? That is both crazy and scary at the same time. I rather see an Taipan then a Death Adder any day. 😅

I know people throw the term 'hero' out all the time, but in this case I'd absolutely agree that the people who do this are heroes. I had anxiety just watching from behind a monitor on the other side of the world from this. I cannot imagine the level of concentration, fear, stress, etc that takes place in a room with snakes like that. The people in this profession literally put their lives on the line every single day in order to provide something to save other peoples' lives. Without antivenom there would be many, many, many lost lives. Props to them for their dedication because it is insanely valuable to the greater good. And props to Coyote for even being that close to those snakes. Even if one of them was being controlled and unable to bite I would still have too much fear to help keep it still so it could be milked. Bravo.
