BadPop Yes, sometimes being empathetic can really suck. Maybe that's why there are so many out there that seem totally devoid of it. Feeling the fear and pain in the world is overwhelming sometimes. That's why it's so important to look for the joy as well.

@T R I've learned just enough ASL to follow this guy. I've watched this vid three or four times, just because his mode of expression is so eloquent. I loved the end when he signed, "I'm speechless," then finger-spelled, "S-P-E-E-C-H-L-E-S-S!" Now I need to watch the vid about two dozen more times to pick up some of the nuances.

Reminds me of the first time putting on my first "behind the ear" hearing aid in second grade. My reactions were just like this guy's. I was hearing sounds I'd never heard before. The birds, the wind blowing through the leaves, even the tires on the car as they traveled on the road. Now nearly 50 years later, i am losing what hearing i have left. Never take sight or hearing for granted.

I know exactly how it feels to put hearing aids on for the first time. I was 57 when I first got them and it truly amazed me how much I was missing. The biggest surprise was realizing that I wasn’t hearing the cymbals when I was listening to music. Lesson learned big time.

I remember a small incidence of this. My mother (in her late sixties and quite resistant to thinking her hearing was going), and I attended the hearing-aid clinic at our local hospital. She was tested and we returned to have the aids fitted and we went outside. It was just an ordinary day weather-wise, somewhat windy,. My mother frowned, said, what's that noise? I had to think for a moment. It's the wind, Mom, I said. She frowned again, shook her head, not believing me. It was just an unpleasant invasion, not a revelation. She never did get used to them; they went into a drawer, then some time after, when dementia overtook her, I threw them away.

I was so moved to watch you put on your glasses. I have a severely hearing impaired son, with severe color blindness, and as of today, has refused to get these glasses. I have watched many of these color blind videos, but this by far is my favorite. I’m glad he didn’t wait for his friends because we were able to see his pure reaction, without having balloons thrust in his face with everyone asking “what color is this.” He looked great in the glasses, not silly. Loved his reaction and wish we could see more of him. So happy for him.

Congratulations on your present!! You’ll never see the world as you did before - absolutely life changing! My children got me a pair for my 60th birthday present, only a couple of months ago. I could absolutely fall in love with this man !! He is not afraid to show how he feels, now he has one gift he hasn't had all his life. I wish my mom had these for her paintings, it was hard to buy her paints knowing that the way she saw things was not what she wanted to portray. I never told her she had the wrong colors, I was just glad to supply the tools to make what she saw possible. I love you mom, I miss you.

I am so overwhelmed for you! My Dad was color blind also. The family joke was when Mom wanted the house painted Sea Foam Green and she sent him out for color chips. I think she forgot he was color blind. After many trips back and forth to the store, the clerk had the inkling of what might be wrong and helped him. My Mom got her wish and got her beloved Sea Foam Green house. I can see all colors and am a counted cross stitcher. I use the DMC palette of colored floss to ‘paint’ my ‘pictures’ in colored thread. I know the joy you are feeling as I get the same excitement in choosing a subtle variation of a color to make it ‘soul perfect’ for the feeling I want to convey. I have heard of these glasses but never witnessed the absolute joy in the wearer seeing what I have taken for granted. Thank you for sharing this experience with all of the rest of us. My very best wishes to you in the rest of your colorful life.

They look cool! When they say leave them on for hours per day, they might mean indoor lenses for the inside and outdoor for the outside. I don't know how expensive they are, but clearer lenses inside would be easier to live with.

This is at least the third time I've watched Alan's phenomenal experience. Each time, I've understood more of his signing I took a couple of ASL classes about 40 years ago, and this is a brilliant refresher for me. I'd say that a good 90% of the signs he used are ones I learned, largely because he's talking about one of the fundamental experiences of the world -- vision. As with young kids, people learning other languages inevitably start with colors, numbers, and senses. I wish this eyes weren't so completely hidden by the glasses. They're wonderfully expressive. Edit: I'd also love to see the pictures Alan painted, both before and after his EnChroma awakening.
