A government study on whether to turn a local sign language into a national one is raising questions about how it would be taught in school. Some educators in the deaf community say making the Singapore Sign Language (SgSL) official can standardise communication and foster more inclusivity. However, they caution it should not be taught in isolation. CNA’s Richa Mathew reports. Read more: cna.asia/3SrP5PI

Anything that improves their lives, I support. Thanks for showing an aspect of the deaf community. We are all Singaporeans. ❤

Wow! This is why the education system in s'pore is one of the best in the world. It's so obvious that PAP is the only competent and effective party in s'pore. Awesome!❤❤

Why? Because the PAP has been in power for 64 years and only now in 2024 there is a push to legally recognise sign language?

Just having a phone to type is way more efficient and easier for them to communicate with people nowadays already.

Too bad it can't reach too many people in the world unless one have learned sign languages first. Texts once it is written out can be seen by all in the world. Both have their pros and cons. They can be utilise together to supplement each other. That would be best.

Oh yes one more thing to add. There is a habit in people to find rights and wrongs as well as differences in the things people see and come across in life and internet. Instead of doing that and becoming a habit over time we all can see more things in life and internet to see if there are similarities in it or whether things can supplement and support each other instead. If more people can do that I can tell you this world will be great.

No one can create a fixed universal creation in this world. The heart of humans does not allow that to happen and thus all things cannot be unified in this world at all and language being a direct form of expression of the heart itself is even more impossible to create just one style qnd form of it for all humans to follow and adopt. For those who doesnt understand the nature of human souls and hearts dont waste time trying to do the impossible in life. Handicapped people have compensated senses in their lives. Limited degree of telepathy will be awakened in some of them if it is necessary in order for them to cope with this world. Meaning life will find a way in life so dont worry too much all the time. And even if effective communication methods have been established it still cannot made all humans to have proper two way communication at all. Even in the world of able bodied people a lot of us are still doing or coming across one way communication from people all the time. Because the heart of people dose t want to listen to what others are trying to say thats why.

Wouldn't it be nice if at least the deaf can have a common sign language that could be used everywhere in the world? Could be a competitive advantage.

I have learned organ (keyboard) on a piece of cardboard. Later I replaced the cardboard with a dumb/mute keyboard (literally a rubbish keyboard). Since the dumb keyboard produces no sound, then I think a deaf boy/girl could learn piano as well. What do you think?

Why we bother with shanghainese sign language? Wouldnt it be more helpful to standardise with a language spoken by the most deaf people?

The languages themselves including sign languages are the expression of the speaker heart itself. Even among sign language users there can be dialect and non English speakers as well. You raise up an interesting and important question and that is exactly where the problem lies. They will always be people who want to unify linguistic system but that is also impossible at the same time. I find this video and subject to be amusing to watch and think on. 😅 The languages are an projection of the heart itself and there are many different hearts in people that are shaped by cultures and races. Even handicapped people are not immune from this effect either. So all languages will develop into different styles with all kinds of slangs to it with time. It annoys and exasperated people who wish to unify things and it tickles those such as me who witness it and understand why it cannot become possible. Lol😂

@@MrBoliao98The heart. The heart my dear. What is spoken is not always the true reflection and expression of the speaker heart itself at all times. The heart of the speaker itself know and hold onto it's culture identity as well as ego the whole time and many have tried since time began to change and reform the hearts of all humans to their ideals and all have always failed in this process. At best the world after so many centuries have only succeeded in making people to express and speak certain official working languages in formal situations but once people are back in their own terrains made up of their own dominant and similar culture people and in non formal settings all humans revert back to our own natural culture identities and speak in our own languages again. Languages are songs and mirror of the heart itself and the heart is way more alive and stubborn than most people know in this world. Even if people (mostly state ruling class and invaders who know all these high and hidden subjects that deal with human faith and psyche) are aware of how alive and stubborn the heart is and know it is source and root of this problem or phenomenon and try to challenge and change it they have all always been trying to fight an uphill and impossible battle. We have always see founders of states and conquerors doing everything they could to whitewash everything to a brand new slate to restart anew again such as burning books, banning dialects, deporting emissaries, inventing gestures to denote respect, subverting history, inventing religions and creating punishment to made all humans to do things and act in a complete uniform behaviour but it always end up in disasters and failures as well as reverting back to the population original mental state once the tyrant or ruler is dead etc.

With inconsistencies, some people may learn ASL and BSL in SG and not be able to communicate clearly with each other... not to mention some weirdly unique SG ways of speaking/words haha
