Airplanes can seem to be priced all over the place, but once you know the main factors that drive their different prices it can be easier to spot deals and duds. This video covers some of the most important factors that go into price differences between single engine piston aircraft (when comparing within the same type, anyways), and shows a live view at trade-a-plane.com of a listing to show where this information can be located.

As a mechanic / pilot, I would say that once a plane is past around 40 years old (many first time aircraft are in the 50+ year old range)... airframe total time becomes somewhat less important if maintenance has been well documented unless those times are in the extremely high (say 6000+) or extremely low (less than 2000). Also... extremely low times are not necessarily a good thing - make sure the aircraft hasn’t been sitting unmaintained for a long period of time as both the engine and airframe can suffer severely from corrosion just sitting. Also.. be leery of fresh paint jobs right before a sale... in maintenance we have a saying. “Fresh paint hides a multitude of sins”. Often damage or bad repairs can be unscrupulously hidden by body filler and fresh paint. And lastly... get a good title search. Often aircraft sales are done in person for cash.... make sure that serial number is being sold clean. Heard many a story about a plane being bought only to find out that there are maintenance or storage liens against it from years ago that will prevent it from being resold or financed. Chasing down and settling those old debts can be expensive and time consuming and cost you a sale in the future.

All great advice, thank you for sharing!! I agree especially on the point about seeing how many hours the airplane has been used on average in its history. Low engine time over a long period of time isn't actually a good sign. After I posted the video I wished I would have gone back and made a comment about the airplane in particular that I covered. I really did just choose it at random and thought offering commentary on that particular listing would make the video too long. Might be worth a follow up.

Good point about a potential lien. Considering the fact that you're about to drop an amount of money into something that might get you an apartment or a house (of course, on the low end, it might not, but still), doing a thorough title search is a good idea.

Great video. #10: emotional investment. The owner is really attached and thinks it’s way more valuable than it actually is. Also, crazy bubble planes seem to be in right now. Near or above TBO, avionics older than most living humans, yet crazy high prices way above vref. People are asking ridiculous prices compared to just a couple of years ago and people lining up to drop the money.

If you’re really interested in an airplane, the complete registration history is available via a CD from the FAA.... My airplane log starts in 1967 with the second owner. This is great advice. I would add that TIME since last overhaul is more important than hours. It's not just cost, it's safety. I'll happily fly, or buy, a plane used for instruction that's flown every day and is at recommended time for overhaul. I won't knowingly get in, let alone buy, an aircraft that has been sitting for a couple of months without being flown. Aircraft engines have procedures for proper storage, they're not tested for operation when stored improperly, and very few people follow the procedures. You become a test pilot until the next overhaul.

Very helpful and as someone who is looking for a plane at the moment, also check out FlightAware to see if this plane is flown regularly. You will also easily spot one that is used for school - who flies circles over and over again :) (holding). Beware if the last entry is a couple years old for mentioned reasons. Also it is unlikely that you will find a plane that has or has NOT all the stuff you want: turbo, anti-ice etc.and beware of mods: If the owner / proprietor of the mods / stc's goes belly up you have to fish for used parts. Don't be afraid of buying a bare bone plane and equip it to your liking.

Great information Charlie, I also built a database of various planes for sale to compare and hopefully identify value and market price. My interest is in a Cessna 177 and while I won’t be ready to buy until next fall, I follow the various sources of planes for sale. Only wild card I can’t put my finger on is list price versus sale price. It appears the 177 price has creeped up a bit this past year and so I do t know if the demand is up or if list price is inflated. The quest continues Thanks again, I enjoy your informative videos

@AirplaneAcademy
@AirplaneAcademy 3 года назад
Thanks Erick. Right now my thought is that the single engine jet market isn't very efficient... sure you can buy a cirrus vision jet but my read on the performance profile of that jet is that the only reason you'd buy one is because you want to fly a jet and want the lowest entry point to do it (but still very expensive, despite the purchase price being the lowest out of the jet market). Range and useful load are issues that don't justify the price in my opinion for single engine jets. So many other airplanes outperform the vision jet and for less money.

So Charlie, as an employer, when I interview a prospective employee, I like to try to walk them out to their car when we’re done with the interview. If the inside of their car is trashed then that’s a good sign on how they will treat your stuff if they’re hired. I’ve bought a few aircraft over the years and if you walk into the hanger of a seller and it’s trashed, well you can pretty much tell how they’ve taken care of their plane. If the hanger is immaculate kept then it’s a pretty sure guess that the plane has been well taken care of, just saying. BTW love your videos!
@AirplaneAcademy
@AirplaneAcademy 3 года назад
Excellent point, thanks for sharing. I feel like you can tell a lot about a listing based on the hangar and then also just the quality of pictures... did they put ANY effort into making a nice shot of the panel, or are the windshield covers still on, the headsets are still hanging off the yolk and covering up stuff, etc. etc.... it's not hard to take helpful pictures and so many listings just really miss the mark on quality of info.

@keepyourbilsteins
@keepyourbilsteins 3 года назад
@@PoasLodge Glad you asked! A pre-buy is a matter of advocacy and perspective vs an annual which is simply a determination of current airworthiness. During a pre-buy, the buyer chooses the A&P/IA, one that has no affiliation with the seller or the seller's mechanic/IA. Does an annual mandate a bore scope inspection be performed on the cylinders? Nope, only a compression test. How about cutting open the filter for inspection and sending the oil off for analysis? Nope. Scoping the camshaft for wear and pitting? Again no. Any of these checks are valuable to determine potential expenses and maintenance costs which are not a requirement of an annual inspection. That's just the powerplant we're talking about.

@tomsmith3045
@tomsmith3045 3 года назад
It should have helped your negotiations, in a really simple way. Take the value of the plane, subtract the cost of a rebuilt engine, and that's the planes value. An engine with 20 years on it since overhaul isn't an engine, it's a core.
@AirplaneAcademy
@AirplaneAcademy 3 года назад
Hi Tim - yeah the age of the engine definitely plays a role. It wasn't until after posting this video that I thought to include that... the listing in particular that I covered was a great example on it that while it had decently low engine time, it was a very aged engine and hadn't been run much on an annualized basis.

Very good video--lots of information to use. Looking at a 1963 C172, good paint, interior,---VFR panel. 1000 hrs since overhaul, but was done in the late 80's. All logs since new. What's your thoughts on a price??
@AirplaneAcademy
@AirplaneAcademy 3 года назад
Hi Randall - thanks for the comment. If the engine hasn't been overhauled since the 80's, that feels like a red flag to me. That means it's flown on average about 20-25 hours per year over the last 40 years. So, I would definitely factor that in. As for price, I'd need to deep dive into similar 172's and get a baseline. As mentioned in the video, I encourage you to start recording what you find here into a spreadsheet and build your own data set on it. You'll become really good at price interpreting faster than you think.

@AirplaneAcademy
@AirplaneAcademy 3 года назад
I've loved my 182 a ton and have never regretted it. It depends on who you ask, but mine is a 1975 P model and I've had a really good run with it. As for the turbo, I think it depends on how much mountain flying you're going to do. Turbos are expensive if you're not putting them to work, and they come with higher costs (purchase price, maintenance, fuel burn, engine life, etc.). If you're wanting to go OVER the mountains, then a turbo isn't a bad idea, but also oxygen (or you can just carry it with you). I'd just evaluate what % of the time you're really needing to do that. Because you could end up buying a lot of airplane that you only put to work 2% of the time for what it can really do.
@johnstreckfuss3068
@johnstreckfuss3068 Год назад
would you mind elaborating on the issue of lost or partial logbooks? I'm currently looking at a C177 that has incomplete logs. the plane runs great with good compression on all cylinders.What steps are typically necessary to get this airplane square with the FAA? Do you know?
@AirplaneAcademy
@AirplaneAcademy Год назад
Hi John - the issue is that its previous history is unknown. What repairs have been done? What has the airplane gone through? What's the history on the components that are currently in the aircraft? It's not necessarily a deal breaker but the less info you have the more you're rolling the dice a bit. Many aircraft we buy are from the 60's and 70's (including mine) and so lost logs isn't uncommon. But ideally you'd have the paper trail for the full life of the aircraft.

@AirplaneAcademy
@AirplaneAcademy 3 года назад
Hi Artem - it's a good question. I'll be honest, I don't have empirical data on time of year to buy. My GUT would be that you might be able to find some deals in the winter as a lot of North America does less flying then, but I don't have the data to back that up. In my own experience, once you are ready to purchase an aircraft I would be checking the listings every day because once a good "deal" does come up, it doesn't last long at all. I think it's not as much seasonal as it is waiting for the right aircraft to pop up, which could be anytime.
@davidcole333
@davidcole333 3 года назад
If I understood the listing shown correctly...the engine was last overhauled in 1990, or 30 years ago. Even though the time on the engine was only mid life after 30 years, I wouldn't trust putting my family in that plane before the engine was overhauled. It also looked like it had old interior, paint and avionics. So in my estimation, the owner ought to be giving this plane away, not asking 125k for it. Because it needs about 125k in upgrades to make it current and fresh. In fact, I would bet my next paycheck that is why the plane is up for sale because the owner can't afford everything the plane needs. I would think that a buyer would be in a much stronger position on this aircraft than the seller.
@AirplaneAcademy
@AirplaneAcademy 3 года назад
Hi David - I agree that the duration since last overhaul (vs. engine hours) does stick out on this listing as a big negative. I realized after I posted this video that that would have been a helpful point to make. Thanks for adding it here.
@4WDJeepDriver
@4WDJeepDriver 3 года назад
Does an overhaul basically reset the clock on an engine? Does that mean this engine has another 1297 hours before another overhaul is due? Is the avionics in this plane outdated? In your opinion is $125,000 high or low?
@AirplaneAcademy
@AirplaneAcademy 3 года назад
Once you overhaul the engine yes the clock basically restarts on it. Engine hours count upwards, too... so if it says the engine has 500 hours on it, that's total hours on the engine, not hours left before overhaul. However, making the decision that it's time to overhaul isn't always the same set of engine hours, though. In other words, it might have a suggested TBO of 1,500 hours but you might find that you need to overhaul it sooner (or later) than that depending on the actual health of the engine. As for the $125k, I'd need to do some more research on it and look at comps. I really just picked a listing as an example to show where the data is at but wasn't so much looking at the price relative to the market for this particular listing. I have another video that talks about building a comps model here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DIMJ7czpfo0.html

Absolutely everyone asks for more than they want because absolutely everyone will offer less than is asked regardless of anything else.

Charlie, I have watched two of your videos and will probably subscribe. Your content is good, and you are knowledgeable and articulate. I see your channel is 1-1/2 years old, and you should have 100K subs by now - but you don't... Here's why; Your voice-over narrative is fine, but from 50%-80% of the video is just looking at your happy face (with a neatly trimmed beard) sitting in a room. Seriously, what you need to do is continue the talking - but fill the screen with planes, flights, landings, departures, walk-arounds, and any type of general aviation video clips which relate to what your discussion is about. I know, that is more work. But, you will get a LOT more views and many more subscribers. I watch many aviation channels, and this is the only thing holding you back. Trust me on this.

Hi Gilbert - thanks for your considerate feedback. I will add more b-roll into my future videos. Many of my more recent ones have it but in this particular video I had less of it.

I been flying for 50 years. After you decide on the airplane you want. Do a prebuy inspection not a A&P check out and if it doesn't have all log books this airplane just lost half of its value. Ever watch airplane repo. There air so many things to look for when buying an airplane it would take most of a day to explain everything not 15 minutes.

Sorry for asking this but: you never mentioned if you aew married or not. I am and was a pilot and like you wanted to uy an airplane, BUT a wife is very expensive much more then an annual, fuel and insurance! Then you hear the loving words: can we have children. This statement alone is a plane killer if not a flying killer. It is my belief that flying is is: time and money, if you have time you have no monet, but if you have money you have no time. Sorry for crying on your shoulder but.........! For young adults CAP is a wonderful place to find out about and experience flying!

I think a lot of people already know this stuff, it's just common sense when looking for a plane
