Dealers or Stealers? Enough speculation! Here's the hard truth about the future of Rolex values.

Across the entire spectrum of the watch community from collectors to grey dealers, from investors to enthusiasts, there is one thing in common that we all seem to have our own opinion on and that concerns where secondary market prices lie for Rolex watches but more specifically, following 18 months of market volatility, we've all got our own idea on where they may end up.
Every youtube video exploring the Rolex brand has a comments section dominated by those fortune tellers with their crystal balls predicting the market will fall further, apocalyptic soothsayers foretelling of an impending Armageddon where we will see grey market values for all hype Rolex fall below retail and those more frequent conservative estimates believing that the correction will end once prices fall to that of the days of pre hype.
In other words, back to 2016/2017 levels before we started to witness exponential appreciation of prices on a quarterly basis. I think its time that we assess where grey values lied in relation to their retail prices pre the hype days and compare with the landscape as it stands today,
....are we already there? Or will values fall further? So lets answer the question, Rolex secondary market prices, how low will they go?....

Great video but I think prices will tumble further because of a few reasons. The retail price on many brands is now too high and people are just thinking it’s all got a bit silly and they aren’t buying and if anything they are selling off some pieces. Secondly the belief you will make a profit or get your money back is fading away. Thirdly the cost of living and the fear of watch crime has stifled demand to buy and wear high end pieces. Lastly the Rolex brand has lost its appeal with the wealthy as it’s been adopted by basically chav’s with money or people pretending to be wealthy.
@geno816

I agree with this. Also less people are buying because there is less cheap money available, student loan payment will begin again (in America), inflation is hurting even the upper middle class. And recession fears are increasing. People are getting tighter with their money.

I’d go a step further. People have lost confidence. Especially with grey market dealers and their colluding with other stores to set prices.

Well said, I think the rrp rise has taken the bubble out of the grey market a bit- they’ve sort of come up to meet the crazy prices a bit and we will be a bit like we were 10-20 years back where most Rolex models can be gotten at rrp or slightly below, but the days of second hand 10 year old watches with shit bracelets and average movements going for more than new updates ones is over. A lot of people made a lot of money out of nonsense things like crypto and NFTs and thought they were very clever, they spent the money as quick as they got it and now most of them are realising they weren’t super talented and are struggling for work 😂 The old money people and collectors have moved on a bit to other brands as they don’t want to be a target for thieves whilst looking like a footballer/drug dealer/Instagram wanker/grime artist. The watch market won’t die but the stupidity has ended.

Vinny, I think you are 100% correct . Greymarket dealers are panicking right now with how far the prices have fallen but it’s their own fault for bumping up prices through the roof in the first place . This correction is actually good for those of us who are collectors and keep our watches .

@@androidaccount7743 it’s not enjoy ,it’s watching how much this whole thing got way out of hand. People were paying 20k for an OP 41 with a light blue dial when the watch only cost 6k . Daytona panda at the time was 14k selling for 40k and a 9.9k Pepsi for 30k. That is greed and not business, that is taking advantage of the situation and now look at the outcome , robbery and even people getting hurt because they own a Rolex, that wasn’t that way before it started when the Greymarket starting inflating the prices in some cases by 300%. So yes I want to see the pieces come down back to earth and that could stop the violence and watch crime. Senseless to hurt or kill someone for their watch and it’s perceived value .

Nobody is talking about the leverage these resellers are using to take up all the inventory. They have to service that debt and pay their overhead so the longer you hold off on overpaying for a watch the lower prices will have to fall. Rent is always due at the first of the month. I totally agree Rolex and other watches brands have completely lost control over their watches and it’s building resentment towards these brands. Talk about B2B they are just dumping watches as dealers have so many brand new unworn watches that are just sitting now. Yeah if you can be patient prices will continue to fall. Free money has dried up and resellers better watch out. Nothing worst than spending thousands on a transaction that looses money.

As I have a relationship, they extended my time for collection for a week. I still don't have the cards, and they advised they would have to release it to another WoS store. Whether buying or selling many have no idea since they are newbs who came into Rolex buying when many grey dealers were telling them prices could only go up so they paid the asking without question. I feel prices will drop to early 2018 when a Non Date Sub was £5450 retail grey £5750, the Hulk was £6600 retail and Batman was £6850 retail both were a little over in the grey market. Daytona will stay well above retail, GMT will drop a bit further with the green Sub and Date and Non Date Subs a few hundred above retail. Perfect scenario for collectors really. Great video but your Sky-Dweller blue grey market price today may be a tad low... Thank you.

We shouldn’t forget the role that the greedy flippers have played in this. Jumping on the rapidly increasing prices to buy up Rolex’s, expecting the value to keep rising, and then when started crashing, they wanted to dump their watches; the greedy grey dealers took advantage of this to offer silly low values which the flippers took afraid about how far the prices would fall. It’s saturated the grey market and now it’s these dealers that are worried about the stock they are carrying.

Another thing that nobody seems to be talking about is the massive popularity of superclones. People are buying them in droves in the UK, because they are so good. These are not just people who can't afford the real thing, many are watch people who have bought genuine before. Superclones are both canibalising sales of genuine Rolex, as well as devaluing and de-exclusivising the brand. Not good.

Absolutely right. When you buy a chunk of steel for 10k, really think about that and then are offered a chunk of steel, that is finished with the same finesse for 0,5k... one must be wrong. This fact will damage the opportunities for rrp overpricing, which has been taken too far (Omega, Rolex). So full gold watches are the way to go, because there are no (real gold) superclones afaik. However, the multiples for the originals are still too high. I would like to know by what brilliant master mind marketing strategy Omega pm Speedies have a higher rrp than their Daytona counterparts? Regarding the video... even in 2019/20 full gold Subs and DDs could be had way below retail.

It is going to get harder to get the extremely hot Rolex pieces. The experiment has already been done with the green Sky-Dweller - flippers have tried to flip those at almost triple RRP and the punters aren't buying. How much will be asked for the first 126500 Panda which hits the market? The 116 references are looking like a relative bargain at the moment, and most likely in comparison to the 126 references as well. Another note - looking at various pieces of social media, I am sure there was a drop of Explorer IIs into the ADs back in August and all of those pieces were back doored straight to the grey market. I had never seen so many of the same watch hit the grey market at once. Would bet my house on it that this happened.

There are numerous brand new unworn Rolex's of the model I have ordered on the secondary market which I can purchase right now. but at inflated prices. I am annoyed with this fact and it's the reason I still haven't purchased. Great video looking at the actual change over time rather than just making a load of unsupported statements. I feel that the sentiment across the collector community and youtube etc has become very negative and almost uniformly pessimistic lately which is of course why all market prices fluctuate - human emotion. Generally widely held consensus views like this tend to leave most people offside when (and if) the trend does eventually turn around. The typical scenario would be finally capitulating and selling your hulk for £12k as you state just to see prices surge again in the following weeks. Im not saying this will happen but it is an observable feature of how market pricing generally functions and there is no reason to believe this will be different. We be interesting to follow over the next 12 months :)

Here’s what I’m finding…a lot of dealers are not willing to negotiate the inflated prices down & would rather hold than sell and get liquid to reinvest again as they can’t handle the thought of not making their margin. Also, I’m seeing them buy low but still try and sell at “market” price. Grey dealers are not understanding the cyclical nature of business as they’re too new to trading. I went to one guy for an AP he was selling at 46k, wouldn’t come down to where it should be so managed to find a better version for substantially cheaper. He lost a sale and a potential long standing client!

Where are you getting the sell prices from? What we are seeing is advertised price on internet but getting almost 10-15 percent off watches. Some watches 20 percent off the internet price. Dealers are negotiating more especially for big pieces to sell. The market is not really organized so small dealers who work on small margins will offer low and sell low. Bigger dealers offer higher for trades and can make deals. I have better relationships with grey market than AD for sure. Have bought and sold from them for many years was used to buying under retail. Then over retail and now back down. Able now to get pieces that were very hard even 6 months ago. People are in mindset and value of money of watches and that is the problem. Buy what you like, can afford and forget if market goes up and down. The madness in price increases due to extra liquidity during COVID years created this bubble (and others such as cars, crypto, NFTs). I agree there is still some downside on these models as the world economy slows down. However, there is now an increased awareness of premium and luxury watches bringing more people into this "hobby". Yes, some were looking at it as an investment only and will eventually move on to the next fad, but others are here to stay and establish a baseline level of demand higher than 2019. Brands (really Rolex, AP, Patek) must significantly increase their production to get back to the 2019 "balance" of supply/demand. Rolex has announced construction of a new factory, so this is not out of the question I guess...

In a steady or rising market 10‰ margins and frequent transactions works fine. When the market slows and prices on a general slide, less frequent transactions do mean more margin is required. We can all see watches stay on the market now for months where it used to be days or a few weeks at worst. 2 pennies from a 3 watch guy with no Rolex :)

I think you are right. But at some point some margin is better than no margin, so shouldn't prices drop?

I think you’re totally wrong and usually you’re a smart guy but I don’t think the basic Rolex says you know submariner Jim geez explorers the Daytona are gonna drop anymore if anything they’re going to stabilize and stick and they may be even go up. Sorry to disagree with you.

Great video, but I disagree with the characterization of the dealers offer as a "rip off". You are under absolutely no obligation to sell, and if you think or know the watch to be worth more simply move on and get your price elsewhere.

I believe that prices will increase significantly. midterm future Chinese and Russian watch affictionados will return and spend money on watches. And as soon as crypto currencies soar again, demand for watches will go up…

I think we're nearing a bottom. There could be some black swan stuff, but I don't think it'll last long. Our attitudes towards assets are changing as everyone's money becomes worthless. Daytonas are never coming back t0 2017 premiums, unless we're entering a completely new paradigm, in which case we all have much bigger troubles. There won't be grey dealers under a new paradigm. The more I hear people now agreeing it's going lower, the more I think the bottom is very near.

So, would you say, that watches still are as effective for flexing? I think, the last couple of years have taken away some of this effectiveness.

@@followyourpassion8378 it’s completely subjective. Non watch people never notice watches. I’ve never bought one to ‘flex’

The watch market is dead. You are in denial still right? We are in a global recession now. We will enter a global depression soon. This depression will be the worst of our lifetimes. Don't buy luxury goods unless you pay rock bottom prices for it. Be prepared to hold onto it for many years.

Unless you WANT the watch for you-and you intend to keep it-stop paying pumped up prices-make retail or only slightly over retail to greys. Make your offer and wait. You might be pleasantly surprised. Also, don’t be a clown and chase AirKings, OPs, and Explorer 1s. Those are for Ukrainians and they are like Ukrainians-No one really wants them. If that’s the best you can do-save your money or buy an omega.

I won’t argue you prices is wrong but they are listed prices. Trading value is quite different… as you saw with the Hulk. The trade value will make it to the end users, it’s just a matter of time. As you said, don’t let them get away with it… Which is why we will see grey prices fall back to the norm ie. Pre hype and pre 2018 compared to msrp that is. The dealer chats I see, in the EU and US had quite a significant increase in the drop rate during August and September. Used Platona is about retail now in the public Moda group the are 82k📉 The white Daytona, is still high, but it’s about the only one left staying very strong. But but but, they trade now between 20 and 25k in the us chats. The 🫒 DD is public listed in Europe for retail. Blue Sky on oyster is about a 1.5k above retail public listed. Not arguing, just shooting the 💩 in response to your insightful video. Cheers.
