yeah it can definitely be difficult... but you'll see when you're in work mode you almost become a different person and it's weird but you experience the situation much less personally then if it were outside of work... hard to explain lol! If you have a chance while you're still a student, if a patient passes away on your floor definitely try to help out with the body to slowly get some exposure to situations like this :)

as a CNA in both oncology and the ER, i have unfortunately seen death up close and personal. with oncology patients it was harder because most of those patients were there for months, or reoccurring patients over time, so a bond was made and you really got to know their stories. in the ER, it's not as difficult, because it's usually a traumatic event. but i definitely feel you; it is a bizarre feeling to walk away from a death and keep working like nothing happened.

I'm about at the time in high school where you're expected to start thinking about college and your career. i really want to be a nurse but i'm so afraid i won't be able to handle it. the thought of being responsible for someone's life is terrifying to me, but being a nurse is something i've wanted do to for a while. i've always been interested in the medical field, and i love interacting with and helping people. i honestly don't know what to do.

I really like this type of video because it opens up a conversation on matter that we all struggle with. I am not a nurse yet but this video serves as another reason as to why I want to become one!! Love you Justine 💜

I wish it didn’t bother me. Just lost my first patient after taking care of them for a few days. I’ve been struggling with it more than I thought I would.

I am a CNA in transitional care, and I have never had a patient die on the job, but there have been times where I come back to my shift after a few days off and learn that some of my favorite patients have passed while I was gone. It's definitely not a good feeling, but like Justine said, you are in work mode, and its not as hard as you think to put it behind you and continue with your shift.

I cried a little. I must admit. Sometimes I worry about death in work. But I think the sensitivity to life lost is what makes great nurses, after experiencing death I feel like it would allow you to work that much harder on keeping your living patients alive. Being a nurse is such a gift knowing you're helping people stay alive or pass on peacefully. Nevertheless! Awesome work Justine!

I never had a issue dealing with the death of a patient. I’m working pediatric home health now and my issue is I bonded with a child who is no longer getting care. Improved. Doesn’t need it. Not working with that baby anymore. Miss that kid terribly.

I haven't encountered death while at clinical yet. I've come close but it seems to keep happening on my days off. I'm really nervous for that first experience with death but this makes me feel a bit better. I hope "work mode" kicks in for me as well

Thank you for sharing these stories! Not a lot of people do. I have a question. When you have a code and you're busy trying to stabilize, what happens when one of your other patients start having an emergency? Are there plans in place for who need to look after the other patients? Sorry, never worked in hospital and hope to be once I graduate. 😊

HeatheRNicole hmm thats a good question! i feel like the team would split in half and get extra doctors to help? not sure actually that's never happened haha!

HeatheRNicole that is a great question! Especially on certain units where emergencies are more common! I'm curious to know 🤔

Most people are worried about how nurses take death...but it happens? Be tactful and show your condolences and understanding. Respect, but it’s okay to not be broken up. I know I’ve been on the patient side for getting a aortic valve replaced with a mechanical one and honestly I wasn’t scared. Given I was 17, but I had prepared myself for the worst. I said my “I love you’s” spent time with my friends ate my favorite things and soso. My family were the ones worried and crying. They thought it was weird how I took it. I did flat line in surgery, but I am over that time in my life and living. I’m happy for that. But I think when it comes to death...be respectful and understand it’s apart of life and do everything you can to keep it from happening and work towards your next patient with the same care and caution.

I'm a CNA and just had to deal with this kind of situation. I am a very emotional person and I had the strength to look in the eye of a family member and describe the residents life. The family member hadn't been in the resident life for 10 odd years. The nurse didn't the resident and the other CNA's didn't want to talk to the family. It was up to me to put the family members mind at ease. You will be surprised to know what you are capable of.

this even illustrates how much strength you have! even though it was very difficult, you should be proud of yourself!! :)

Hi Justine! Do you have any tips how to study for a cumulative exam?
@Jujubml

wow thats a tough one! I'm facing the same struggle right now! :( I'd say focus on the material after the midterm since that's generally what the final focuses on, and then review the rest of the material :)

Gabby Girl The way I see it is I’m telling a story that I experienced, and if I don’t mention their name or factors that they could be identified by, there’s no way of knowing who this person was!

Justine G.Feather hmm. Suppose the wife happened to catch this video? Not likely, but it could happen. Kind of a gray area when it comes to HIPPA.
