Lyle, many garages are out to screw the customer with unneeded parts and labor, sometimes not even changing the part.. You and some other garages are exceptions to rule, however, it is becoming very dangerous for uninformed customers to rely on some garages to do the right thing especially 'Dealerships'.. 1

I've been restoring and fixing old cars, and Corvettes of course, for years. There are no shortcuts. Cheap parts or avoiding a repair is gonna cost you more down the road. If you can't afford to do the repair right, time to sell the car and take up gardening. Also, sometimes you need a specialist like an alignment or AC work or tire work. Find a shop and develop a relationship because in the end, you need the specialist more than he needs you. Don't nickle and dime the poor guy. Business relationships must be "win win." A good relationship will benefit you in the long run.

How true! There is a learning curve though in finding that shop in which to build a relationship with. Another bump along the road in how much is win-win and win-lose with any auto. Like you said about taking up gardening cause it easy to get discouraged after getting burned by a shop that can't be trusted. Looking online to find a shop is risky at best, even the folks in our corvette group were going out of town with their newer vett's. So, my older vett was on me. I found a shop, even close to home who tells it like it is! I can explain an issue and get an honest response. Some repairs are better left to a GOOD shop instead of a shotgun approach to parts that never get the issue fixed. You and Lyle got this one right!

I needed a new radiator on my 96 with 150k on it. I went online to find a new one and talked to my mechanic about it. He told me to hold off until he checked things out with his supplier. He called me back and wow was I surprised. The radiator from his supplier was a third of the price of the one online, which means the entire cost of replacement was the same as the internet price of the radiator itself. The shop also gives a 1 year warranty on any work they do.

Last time I took a car in for repairs I needed a new fuel level sending unit. My tank had two of them. The shop accidentally replaced the wrong one, so they had to do it again. Then they found out that the first one they installed on the wrong side was the wrong part and had to drop the tank a third time.

Lyle, those are words of wisdom! Most car guys are corvette owners? or is it most corvette owners are car guys? Whichever way it applies if "us" are serious about our vettes we should have the FSM. If "us" follow the diagnostic tree and we get somewhere we are not comfortable being, then time to consider guys like Lyle. I always like to take the consensus of all my vette buddies on which dealers have the motivated technicians so in case I need a dealership I know where to go. As a side note, I have found that usually the local dealer that sells a lot of vettes does so for a reason. That's usually where I go. JMHO on the subject.

Always hear the best advice. I recently had a clutch master replaced. After shopping around and getting different diagnosis one saying master one saying slave I took it to Chevy. I know I surely paid premium but they diagnosed it and supplied the part. Car fixed properly. Your advice well taken. Again I say I wish I was closer to you.

Good video. If I have a shop do work I’ll let them buy the parts. Problem is too many shops do not want to take the time to diagnose, they just throw parts at it. Your shop may be an exception, but few shops seem to want to diagnose. Dealers are the worst.
@csvette
@csvette 2 года назад
Dealers don't actually reapir anything anymore. The computer tells them what parts to replace, and you get a bill...even if the car isn't fixed. Diagnosis is the most vital function any shop can perform...unfortunately, many of them lack the knowledge or desire to dig that deep. When you find someone who does those things well, keep them! Lyle :)

@wildlesbians
@wildlesbians 2 года назад
Some parts such as a new transmission, it really does make sense to have the mechanic handle the buying, even if he does mark it up a lot. For example a 2003 transmission can be bought at a dealership, and GM. But there is a $700.00 core charge, and a 30 day time frame to ship the core back. miss the deadline and you will eat the cost of the core charge. If mechanic orders it, and fails to ship out the core on time, that is his problem not youres. Some mechanics do go a bit overboard on the marking up of parts. i know some that jack up the price of parts by 150 to 200 percent. Best to avoid them. Some parts it just makes sense to buy youre self from the best retailer. Such as ac delco brake rotors. Dealer price $99 each for front, $89 ea for rear. same ac delco parts are about $34, to $36 each at rock auto. Now does it make sense to have a mechanic Charge you $150 for each ac delco rotor? Hell no. For me it makes even more sense to just do the work myself if possible.

I believe one of the most important things to discuss with a mechanic working on your car is the source and quality of the parts "you" would like put on your car. I prefer quality parts from a known supplier and I am willing to pay for the quality. I want to see the old parts, and the boxes the new parts came in. Not that I don't trust my mechanic, but the shop should be willing to maintain creditability without getting put out. If there is an unknow issue that comes up during the repair and it is major, I also want to be notified by the mechanic and given the opportunity to come to the shop and inspect the issue. In mind these things just keep things straight and provide all the stake holders with good communications. Thanks for all the great input you provide for the community.

I’ve been going to the same shop for 30 plus years. I have a 2004 Corvette my mechanic also has a Corvette 2008 he does all the work on his own Vette and he’s the only person at the shop that works on my Vette I let him get the parts because he knows the best parts to use best prices best warranty. When I bring it in for something as simple as a oil change everyone already knows he’s doing the oil change he also looks over everything on the car when it’s up on the hoist and asks how’s the car driving anything that doesn’t sound right any concerns.

Lyle, I have a low mileage, well cared for beautiful 94 Corvette and live in Palm Beach County. There are two big Corvette repair shops here, that I’m aware of (that have Corvette in their name and specialize in Corvettes) The one in Jupiter does fine work but won’t repair anything that requires used parts. Many things require rebuilt or used parts. So, they won’t fix my anti-lock brakes, my slip control, my cruise control, my climate control and my weather stripping. They specifically turned me down for these repairs. The shop in Delray wouldn’t let me even bring my car in to them when I listed the repairs I was seeking. So, I bought new weather stripping and a body shop is set to replace them. I bought rebuilt climate control buttons, and a mobile mech is set to replace them along with the new radio I bought. Neither Corvette shop will do any of those things and if I don’t supply the parts, I can’t get anyone to fix them. I even considered transporting my car to Sarasota to have your shop fix it up. So, your advice is fine where decent shops exist willing to do the job. I have money and am glad to pay for anything done. Do you know of a local shop in my county where I can drop the car off with the problem and have it fixed?
@csvette
@csvette Год назад
Bob, I feel for you on this problem. First, I don't know anyone who I trust in that area for C4 work, unfortunately. Second, we still perform services on C4's regularly but I TOTALLY understand why neither of the shops you mentioned wanted to take the jobs at hand. Even utilizing the best-quality USA-made weatherstrip, it is virtually impossible to get a waterproof seal on a C4--you will always get a few drops here and there no matter how meticulous the installation. Because of the time required to change out the seals and the expense of the USA parts, it is an expensive endeavor and inevitably the customer is unhappy with the results. As far as rebuilt electronics, they are a necessary part of C4 maintenance as you mention. The problem these shops see time and again is that one electrical problem with a C4 leads to several other issues that couldn't be foreseen (or quoted)--like trying to plug holes in a sinking boat where every plugged leak is met by two new leaks and so on. Shops don't want to get dragged down into that quagmire because they will have a hard time making any profit chasing these gremlins and (again) the customer will be unhappy with them....not to mention how a C4 can take a carefully plotted shop schedule and blow it to kingdom come. I'm sorry that this reality makes taking good care of a C4 such a challenge---people like you are trying to do things the right way and are being stymied in their efforts through no fault of their own. I hope my explanation helps you make sense of why shops are refusing this kind of work on C4's specifically--trust me when I tell you that it has nothing to do with you or your car. Lyle

@@csvette I appreciate your information. I don’t impute bad motives to the shops that turned me down. And it’s clear that my car problems are like wack-a-mole. Today I dropped the car off at a good body shop that I used in the past and they are replacing the weather stripping with new ones I purchased thru eBay. On the way it started to drizzle and the d@#m windshield wipers died. The last shop replaced the blades and the driver’s side arm turned out to be stuck in the hood. I freed it and it wouldn’t work. I’m tempted to trade in for a C5. Do the C5s have similar parts and repair problems?

I wish I was more like my wife re: cars which to her are merely for transportation. I come from a long line of car aficionados (or nuts) my Dad had a new 63 Riviera, new 66 XKE and a new 74 Vette. Great advice for most everyone. I have used the same mechanic, (Mike) who owned his shop for over 40 years. I started using this guy about 37 years ago. On occasion I would ask to provide my own parts. Mike almost always agreed and Mike and I would look up the part number and I would purchase the part while still in Mikes office. 1 example is the tachometer on my 78 corvette stopped working and the needle was stuck on 3,500 RPM's. Mike & I looked up the part on Eckler's or one of the other Corvette specialty shops. I had the part shipped to Mikes shop. He would call me when the part came in. He would make the repair and let me know the car was ready to pick up. There is nothing like having the same person work on your car for every repair for over 37 years. I'm sure you have that type of customer as well. Thanks for you videos. Ken Higginbotham

I did have a shop charge me again for labor on an AC compressor (that failed in less than 500 miles) that they provided, and warrantied so while I get the premise here, that's not my experience. They didn't use a real AC Delco compressor, and if I had bought it and given it to them it would have been. Basically they just didn't charge me for the part, but I paid another $1000 to get my AC fixed after paying them $1600 to have it repaired entirely before. I think the shop changed ownership and I am confident they wouldn't pull this move again. They have been good to me 99% of the time, other than this one thing. For me, it's about the quality and brand of parts these shops will install. I only go with certain brands that I've done extensive research on have used for many years. If I can't get a GM factory part then I get something close to it like a GM factory distributor or a company like NAPA's top line which is mostly Standard Co. Allot of the speed shop brands have merged too which makes it difficult like Holley that is an Umbrella to many. So if you want Accell or MSD or Mallory?? It's a Holley parent company now. Everything has changed drastically. As long as the shop installs good parts that I would buy myself? I'll roll with it. Otherwise, I'll buy it and have them install, take the risk...

I had the Opti replaced about 3.5 years ago and it ran pretty good but it has always had what I think are drivability issues. It acts like voltage is an issue to me. When you rev it it hits on all cyl. But return to idle is hesitant and lumpy. Dash lights flicker when it is acting that way. Any clues ? I am in Georgia.

Joel, these screens are becoming a serious issue..they have been unavailable for months now and there is no discernable due date for them. I have no information beyond that. I suspect that GM is scrambling to find a new supplier... Lyle

Do you all do custom work there or modifications?

Don't buy the cheapest part you find . Unfortunately for many owners cost is the main consideration. So let your repair shop get the parts . Your usually covered and can rest easy . I worked in auto repair from 82 - 91 . We would install your parts but told the owner we only guarantee the labor not the part. I have a perfect example . My son's 2016 Trax needed a new cam cover . The PCV is built in and it failed creating a vacuum leak . He decided to source a new GM part on line . I could not do the install of the part at that time so he took it to a local shop . He saved on the part and labor from local shop. A few months later the new GM part he sourced on line had the pcv fail and leaked . He ended up going to the dealer and let them fix it . So he ended up spending more . I suspect that the GM part failed because it didn't meet GM spec . Plenty of faulty factory reject parts on ebay and elsewhere. Had the dealer done the repair and it failed again they would have ate the job . My son learned saving a few bucks is not always a win . Many times its a loss of time and money . The part was factory GM in a factory box . Knowing your part supplier is a must . They usually don't like selling things that fail . If they discover a certain brand has issues they will usually change to another brand to avoid the issue . Can't speak for the big box stores like Auto Zone or Advance .

Never did allow people to bring their own parts. That's a recipe for disaster. The only one was the man that owned a V12 Jaguar. you couldn't get one in town in 1982.

Lyle, this is all common sense stuff that I think the average car enthusiast should know. Shame on them if they do any of the stuff you’ve just described.

Jay, you would be shocked at the percentage of people entering into the Corvette Hobby who don't know any of this stuff. These good folks don't own a screwdriver and they have no earthly idea about how anything on their car works. I know this seems dumbed down, but for a lot of people this is brand-new info. Lyle
