DEALING WITH REFS: HUGE GOALTENDING Q&A FROM FLORIDA
In this week’s TBT video we revisit some important topics and watch a student with some sweet movement and transition skills around the net.
1) How to deal with and manage bad refs and bad calls.
2) How to position yourself when you are shorter.
3) How do you separate yourself from other goalies that are practicing and playing about the same amount as you.
…plus more.

Speaking truths Keeks!.. Always chatting up w/Refs.. especially in the beer leagues. Some even get shocked (coming from a Goalie!) 😂 It goes along way for sure. Also, get good at picking up the puck after saves etc 🤙

Refs are humans too…

Apparently, picking the puck up and handing it to the ref helps. My son does that 90% of the time. One game the ref said " you don't have to pick it up, but stop shooting it down the ice" he then went to the bench and told the coach he would get a penalty if it happened again. I think he was just having a bad day.

Once in a beer league game, I was laying on the puck but the ref called it a goal , saying I had pulled it out of the net and tucked it under me. I didn’t, but no use arguing in a meaningless beer league game. ( score was like 200-1 at that point anyway )

I have been in those 200-1 games before. lol

Hi Keith, Your a funny guy. You like to joke around. I’ve seen it so many times in your videos. How about sharing a few jokes you made with referee’s. If referee gets a good laugh when he picks up the puck from your glove. He will give a break once in a while.

hi Steve, nice video. I don't mean to go off topic, but I was wondering if you have any words of wisdom for someone like me who just can't physically play anymore. I am a no level "goalie" basically. I've played a handful of rec games as a fill in but more pick-up games than anything else since 2003 if you can even call those games. My last outing was almost misery. I can't move faster than slow anymore and if I drop down, I use the net to pull myself back up. It's embarrassing and no fun. I know it's nobody's fault but mine for being overweight and out of shape but it's getting harder to do all that working out too. I will turn 58 this coming year. I don't mean to sound like I'm feeling sorry for myself. Maybe I am a little bit, but I'd like to hear what a pro felt and what you did to feel good about moving on. I do know some of what happened to you in your career. What some knucklehead did to you. I'm not trying to get into your personal space but maybe you have some stories from friends too that had to call it done. Thank you.

Let me know a number through DM and I’ll call you. I had struggled with weight and I am a similar age. I can help you for sure. Keeks

Hopefully Keeks has offered some great advice for you. I haven’t reached the age of grey beard wisdom, but I did drop 50 lbs this past season and got moved up to the next level. My secret, cut calories. I limited myself to between 1200 to 1500 calories a day and lost all the weight in less than 3 months. Consult your doctor to make sure you’re not at any risks, and be sure most of your calories are protein. Also, only drink water / black coffee and try to eliminate as much sugar as possible. The first 3 weeks were rough with severe hunger pain, but that’s all in your head. Next, consult with Maria Mountain about getting a good off ice training regiment going to get your knees, ankles and hips in good working order. Hockey should be just for fun, not your actual workout. This could change every aspect of your life and will require a lot of discipline and dedication. It ain’t easy, but it’s worth it.

@@OldFogeyGoalie thank you for the kind words. I felt kind of stupid writing what I did afterwards because today I got fired up a little to try and do at least some of what you said. I still like to put on the pads and feel the shots. I just want to be able to compete and not look like a fool. The skate is a parents/coach's skate and I swear it's one of the better ones out here. Great bunch of guys that actually play defense. Good passing and shooting. I just want to hold my own and give them some competition. I was running treadmill 3x's a week before summer started and man my stamina felt so good. I'm going to get back on it. I don't really want to quit just yet. Thanks 😎, Nick

Key with refs is, they're sort of receptive too. You guys are in the same boat in many ways. Let him know if players are getting aways with stuff. Point things out calmly as if you're on the same side. Sure, you're gonna have stooges and activists, but I find two things to be often true: one, sometimes the one guy that annoys you is actually the one making the right calls when no one else is, so he stands out like he's the one not doing his job. Two, he can work for you with enough friendly talk.
