Report him. Yes it takes time but not reporting is permitting him (and others) to continue. Adage in psychology, criminology, and sociology: What you permit, you promote.

Every scammer have to be reported if not is only going from bad to worse!

You have to use grab. You get the cost up front. No skin tax.

I just returned from a 3-week stay in metro Manila. Not once did any taxi driver use a meter. My Pinay girlfriend hashed out a set price with them before we got in the car to our destination. This is the only way to go when you have to use one of those taxis.

By LAW they have to turn on the meter which they avoid like the plague if they do this tell them to take you to the nearest police station where you will report them

I’m so sorry to hear about your latest ordeal. Unfortunately. I’ve experienced the same scam in Cebu also. On 2 occasions, I’ve seen fake or tampered meters that are counting at almost 3x speed. I always tell them their meter is broken and negotiate a new price to my location

Also, if you are a lone traveler and your luggage is in the trunk of the taxi, you might feel intimidated or trapped. So you might wonder if you will end up in a bad situation if you refuse to pay the amount being demanded. But, I feel you handled the situation well. I know many will feel you should have absolutely reported the driver in order to discourage future scams; but for some if us, empathy for someone's life and livelihood causes us to de escalate the situation and try to reach some compromise. Especially if we sense genuine remorse or sense the driver may fear for his job. Its a tough call, but we have to do what we feel is right.

Hasn't anybody learned enough about metered taxis? This is old news. That is why there are online transport services. Even locals stay away from hailed taxis as much as possible because of their reputation.

Yes, when I left the Manila airport it cost me $100 + a toll to get to my hotel. Didn't even know I was scammed until I took the trip back to the airport and it was $30.

This is why many of us try to fly via Cebu instead of Manila if we are not going to stay in Manila. Because the taxi scams in Manila have always been a problem at least the last 40 years or so.

Cant believe this topic was on my feed today. I landed this morning in Manila and was in a rush to catch an 8:30 am flight to Cebu from a different terminal.... 3800 Pesos. They use the verbiage of "oh we need to take the SkyWay to save time". I was in a hurry so it was my fault that I paid it. Landed in Cebu and paid 700 Pesos for a much longer ride to the hotel. Cebu has always treated me well.

Taxi scams are common near airports not just in PH, but also in Thailand, Vietnam, Egypt, China ,etc.

At least Manila has Grab. Many other cities do not. In Butuan, for example, there is no Grab and all the taxi drivers stand around together and none will use the meter.

As soon as i went out of the airport i was getting the over priced "Taxi Mr?" people. One woman i said how much and she quoted me 3X the price quoted on Grab and by my accommodation host. There of booths in the middle island of the road, with official taxis that were a bit cheaper, or get a bus from the other side of road to anywhere away from the airport, to get a cheaper taxi ride. I always get an agreed price for my journey before stepping into a taxi And watch out for the bag/suitcase grab, where they offer to help carry your luggage and rush you too THEIR car, without negotiations.

Seen scams everywhere with taxi's. I used to work with transport police and door and bodyguard in uk had to report lots of them for scams late at night when clubs close so everyone take care

I NEVER use the taxi when I'm in Manila. I always use the use the Grab. I had a taxi driver upset when I refused to use his service. Even my first time in Manila, I watched videos of scams and knew ahead a time what to expect.

I mostly just used Grab during my visit, which is similar to Uber. The price was probably higher than a regular taxi, but it was at least not scam prices

Its why i only use grab, and for me I do it from the app and not the booth. But I watched a lot of videos on RU-vid before my 2 month journey, so I had a handle on what to avoid. 2 months and 0 times scammed, but preparation was absolutely key.

I got charged 7000 pesos from ninoy Airport to caloocan. I didn't want to argue with them. I was tired from my 2 flights. 30+ hrs

They have had may scams at the Manila Airport. In about 2017 I arrived on a late flight in Terminal 1 (must of been around 22:00) and I stepped out of the arrivals and was asked if I needed a ride to my hotel. I was guided across the road way outside of the Terminal where the taxis usually wait and taken into a glass building and shown a list of destinations (the different districts of Manila) with prices of what the charge was for each destination. I was going to Makati which was listed as 3000 pesos. They take your money then ship you off to your destination. When I flew back into Manila last June I thought I would be safe asking at the counter in Terminal 3 for Hotel shuttles about getting a taxi to my hotel. I told the woman at the counter the name of my hotel and she said "no problem I will arange it but its going to cost 2500 pesos". The GRAB ride back from the hotel to the Airport was around 200 pesos.

Whenever I have used the taxis at NAIA, I have used the yellow taxis where they give you a little slip. Never had one of them not use the taxi and even had one return my phone when I dropped it in the taxi. I went to one of the yellow taxi stations, explained the problem and gave them the slip. They called the driver and brought it back very quickly. Definitely gave him a tip for that. But every other taxi, especially the white ones, have tried to cheat. The second they ask how much you pay, you might as well find another taxi. They really don't like it when you check grab prices and tell them what the price is for a grab.

Yes that happened to me from one side of the airport to the other side of the airport and he tried to charge my 2100 peso and I tried to take his soul and take him to the airport police at the end he got 150 peso

When I was in Manila last year for vacation I took grab to my Airbnb in Makati. Saw how much it was so no problem of being scammed

I use Grab and get the Grab from the stand and get a price confirmed up front.

That meter was definitely doctored to be at least 5x, maybe 10x faster than standard. All scammers should go directly to prison as they are very harmful to the reputation of the Philippines. just think of how this hurts the economy from tourism. Welcome to the "Feelippine$"

I am a white American, who was born raised and educated in southern California and came to the Philippines when I was 24 years old as an Expat worker for international accounting firm. I have been here over 33 years I learned to speak the language fluently can read and write, and all that time I've only had two instances in which a taxi driver tried to scam me, and because of my fluency in Tagalog, they backed off quickly. The thing I would emphasize to that are coming here try and learn the language and try and learn it with the proper pronunciation, this is unfortunate situation. It happens everywhere in the world not so much in the United States anymore because we have a check in balance system using Uber or Lyft, which we also have something similar called grab these types of videos are quite troubling for me because most Filipinos are hard-working and honest pe, they are family oriented. They love God they love their neighbors they love their country. And yes they even love Expats please don't allow this one video to broadbrush because I've been here a long time. I know exactly what I'm talking about.

In my country taxi's have 4 tarifes and the driver decides which one to give you, supposedly one is for day one for night and one for tourists - the most expensive one, idk what the fourth one is used for, usually I'll just ask how much will it cost to get where I want so the driver won't even turn the meter on and it'll be a bit cheaper cuz he can just pocket the money.

I travel a lot , usually from Terminal 3. I know how these taxi drivers work so after I get into the taxi and about to leave, if taxi driver refuses the meter etc I immediately get out, take the piece of paper the taxi booth operator gives you, report him loudly to the booth operatorthat he refuses to use the meter and get into the next taxi WHO has just seen the fracas and WILL definitely use the meter. The taxi driver who refused to use the meter then has to leave WITHOUT a passenger, drive out of the airport ( nightmare) and return to the back of the taxi queue! Lesson learnt. And no matter how much the first taxi driver pleads with you, ok" I use the meter" or " the price is 200 pesos" etc I SAY- " You tried to scam me, I not use you" End of story!!

These people think they're entitled to foreigner's money and how dare you not willing to give it to them.

I got scammed at Manila, traveling from terminal 3 to 1. They wanted 1500 php initially, which I refused. But I still ended up overpaying at 500 php, since I was tired and just didn't want to deal with the hassle.

NEVER put your luggage in the trunk when traveling in a foreign country and of course always check to make sure the meter is on. If not tell them to turn it on or your getting out. Dont be rude but be firm and let them know your not to be messed with. The weaker you appear, the easier target you become.

Besides killing the reputation of all taxi drivers, the cost to Philippine tourism and general economy must be staggering when you consider the numbers of people scammed like this and they vow never to return.

There are people there who offer to help like police officers who help you to get airport transfers which are then offered at 1800 peso --he or she gets a cut of that if you take the ride which i found out is free if you use the free terminal bus and supply a flight ticket for that terminal of which there are 4

They have all kinds of excuses for fee scamming, they only had few customers, gas is expensive, you should give tip is almost a demand, very scary to ride with no meter. I found Yellow cabs to be more honest generally so I always give them tips.

Taxi Scam: SM Bicutan taxi line outside the Supermarket. Taxi drivers are charging 3 times or more after 4pm. I saw this while waiting for my grab. Ayala Mall Manila Bay taxi line on Aseana Drive, taxi drivers won't turn on the meter.

I am a cab driver in Australia. The cab drivers in Manila were okay with me in 2023. I just said use your metre and I will tip you well. Going about 8 to 12 kilometres in traffic was only running at about 140 to 200 pesos.

6months ago. White Taxi refused put meter on, I told him he had to do it, he gave me a ridiculous price for 4km ride. I refused, so he told me get out 200mtr from leaving airport on ramp heading out. 😡. Fortunately next taxi guy was honest. Before u get in, tell them turn on meter to get rid of BS stories and record it all. Never get out until ur bags are out of cars boot/trunk.

Back in October 2022 I was in Manila with my wife in one taxi cab driver tried to scam us he didn't turn on his meter and tryed to charge me and her dubble the price and she told him no because she new how much it cost to go from Manila to kason City because me and her mad that trip so many times befor

I got scammed the same way. It was not my first trip to the PH but I was tired and it was late. The driver asked me for the paper I got at the booth and I was NOT alert. Cost me 2500 p from NAIA to Malate instead of 500-700. As I left the taxi I realized I was scammed. Next time first thing I will take a photo of this paper just in case...

When I've been stuck in this situation and I know it's a scam I just sit silently until the hotel. Then I get out and make sure I get my bags first. Then I call the hotel people over and show them the scam fare and ask them to call the police. The driver will either leave like a rocket and you get a free ride, or he will quickly agree to a much lower fare. But yeah, Grab is just way better.

I got so tired of dealing with the taxi driver there I just quit going there and take the longer flights to Thailand it’s worth it to me to just avoid the hassle and stress that starts and ends one vacation on a bad experience

I was in the Philippines last February and it happened multiple times to me when I took a taxi 🚕 I paid almost always 650 peso for a short ride of 6a7 km

They tried this on me in same location in May and November 2023. I told them with my Slavic accent (sound like Russian), not to mess with me and to stop by so that we can call the police. At the airport they say price is only 200-250 Peso. At the end they ask more then 1000 Peso. You must go tough with them, to show them that you are ready to be nasty. ESPECIALLY PAY ATTENTION FOR THIS SCAM...They told you to wait them behind the smoking zone where there is no camera, lying to you that they will give you discount. In reality they will charge you more.

GRAB is good. I give a little extra just to encourage them to stay in business and put the taxis out of business. Peer pressure, not the government, will solve this problem fast.

I just use Grab if I’m in manilla. There’s literally zero point in hailing a taxi in the big cities because of scams. Always agree on price before hand. A lot of the folks will talk you up outside of the airport to be your friend but really they just want to sell you a 1500 peso taxi ride ACROSS THE STREET to the hotels. You’re better off walking around the large airport gate and crossing the street 😂

I would report him to the officials. This was a robbery. This driver should lose his job.

Next time drag the taxi driver out of the taxi and drag him to the police station. Have the number of MMDA then call them immediately to apprehend the taxi driver. Take a video of the meter, the driver's ID, plate number, phone number of the company he works for. The info is printed on the side of the door. When you see the police while en route, call the police

Even in Italy Italian taxi drivers scam white English speaking foreigners (& Italians are also whites) therefore its common that such happens in PH where the locals are not whites
