Every time one of our Black Belt Instructors is in the studio, we ask them questions we've received from fans like you! We call it our Ask A Black Belt segment and it's a great way to hear a black belt's perspective on all your Jiu Jitsu questions.
This video features Prof. Dean Lister's views on loyalty to your academy when he answers a question we've all had at some point on our Jiu Jitsu journeys... Is it ok to train at other academies?
Dean takes into account regional cultures, rivalries, your relationship with your coach, being respectful, and whether or not you are traveling when considering training with other gyms.
Once these things are factored in, he says train where you want, be respectful, and when you are traveling then get out and train with other people.
Thanks for watching and we hope this video helped you and your Jiu Jitsu! If you liked this video, please let us know by clicking the like button, and make sure to subscribe so you know when we have new videos.
Have a question of your own? Ask it in the comments and we'll film an answer the next time one of our Black Belt Instructors is in the studio. Make sure you're subscribed so you get a notification when it is posted!

You are paying for the service, you are not his slave because he taught you grappling. Do whatever the fuck you want to do.

I'm loyal to my family at home. As long as I'm paying it shouldn't matter. We are all adults for the most part we should train where we want.

Loyalty to your team is still important. If you think your coach isn’t good enough to give you confidence your at the wrong gym. Training at the rival gym in your hometown is a bitch move in my opinion.

If you're on a competitive team, you can make the argument for loyalty to your team and not help the rival team. If you're paying dues as a regular student, it's a business relationship and your school has no right to stop you. If they do, they're exercising monopoly powers to hurt a smaller gym and prevent them from getting off the ground.

I trained at one academy for 12 years. I was loyal even though I was treated poorly. I changed to another school recently and have not regretted my decision. I didn't want to leave my academy because loyalty is key, however doing what is best for me is more important.

I was a punching dummy for the higher belts and was always getting injured. I got my arm torn out of socket once and still haven't recovered. I also was passed up for promotion for several years as I spent 7 years as a white belt and 5 years as a blue belt. I understand it is up to the professor and I never questioned it, however when I could legit tap a brown belt multiple times I had enough.

I appreciate Dean's response. I think training in many local gyms is valuable and can help people think for themselves regarding their jiu-jitsu journey. There are a lot of people that are great a jiu-jitsu, but their concepts of learning are usually wanting. Dean seems to have a good handle on helping people.

i have taken judo for almost 6 years. my coach has done a lot for me as over the years ive had growing and learning to do like everyone else and he gave me breaks on fees and has consistently given me time and attention to hit my martial arts goals. lately i train one day a week at a bjj gym to fill in gaps that judo just doesnt cover to the degree that a bjj school does. but i know its a blow to him to find me taking up other lessons even if i go to his classes 3 times as much as i take bjj in any given week, so i just generally dont talk about it. i respect him enough to not rub it in his face that i want more mat time and drilling in another area of grappling. maybe hes being sensitive or maybe im being disrespectful. im trying to figure that out more than anything i guess.
@IpponQing
@IpponQing 2 года назад
I went through that too. My sensei said BJJ was a fad, it’ll die out, etc. Then once I was a competitive brown belt, I looked untouchable compared to judoka who didn’t train BJJ. Anyways, now he has a ton of respect for me and my skillset, and sends me BJJ videos everyday.

I heard about BJJ people making fun of chinese martial arts schools because they had this reverance about their master and loyalty to their own, but if they're doing the very same thing, this is dumb af. Just train wherever you want, its about competing and getting better, in a single gym you only have so many opponents, you have to go elsewhere to get variety.

@@demorvie 🤣 true but reason why I say its "wrong" because I now realize I've probably could've gotten my black belt and open a gym a lot faster if I stayed dedicated to one gym. I believe it was Rendon Gracie that said every 10lbs equals 1 belt up, and every 10 years also can equal 1 belt up. So if they are 10lbs heavier, or are 10 years younger, do the math. The same accounts for 20lbs or 20 years.

"I'm paying my dues and I can do whatever I want'...and I guess they're right...." Video should've stopped right there. The only reason "loyalty" is an issue at all is because instructors make it an issue.... It's actually pretty simple, instructors: Like most issues in jiujitsu, if y'all stop making it an issue, then it won't be an issue.
@SINdaBlock411
